a MUST HAVE...if only for the brilliant, "When the lights go down." "...literal people are scary, man literal people scare me out there trying to rid the world of its poetry while getting it wrong fundamentally down at the church of "look, it says right here, see!" - ani difranco

an absolute must have. the full version of She Spoke 2 Me is, by itself, worth the time and money. This is actually one of my favorite discs...short and sweet. just like him...just kidding, y'all

I love this album. It's Prince's pre-jazz primer.
The songs flow together very well and it's the perfect disc to listen to on long night drives. No shit. This is not a throw away album, by any means. Oh, and I love the ONA and Crystal Ball discs too. Call me crazy... If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I really hated how this album got lambasted in the press three years ago. I remember the critic gave it A ONE STAR review and said that only thing that proved he still had some creative juices left in him was "My Little Pill". Well do we need to elaborate on the ridiculousness of the said "article"? Another one called out the "80's synth horns" of one cut!
Anyway, great record. And the Warners definitely were able to show a lot of respect for Prince's music as they compiled the record into such a cohesive piece. The big question is however, how did they manage to make this record when Prince (according to his own words) didn't want it to be released? Did he just happen to leave some tapes at the record company's office or what?

a MUST HAVE...if only for the brilliant, "When the lights go down." I wish I had gotten it sooner than I did last year... Because I always knew, but now I really know He(Prince) knows there is LONELY Imperially Yours,

Oh thanks, IstenSzek. I thought so, that's why even Steve Parke did the cover art. Right, and it's so short because it was the same deal basically as with C&D. Funny, this thing never gets talked about too much.
Actually I've started to prefer the later version of "Old Friends 4 Sale" due to the amazing orchestral arrangements. Of course the first version had more sensible lyrics (and a better vocal performance for that matter) but I just personally love that bad film mood. Actually I kinda wish it would have been included on the symbol album instead of "3 Chains", but that's just... you know, irrelevant.

which one is the early version? the one with the orchestra or the one without? tell me.. cause i thought the one with the orchestra was the original, but i like the other one better. don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
purple music does the same to my brain i'm high, so high

Anyway, great record. And the Warners definitely were able to show a lot of respect for Prince's music as they compiled the record into such a cohesive piece. The big question is however, how did they manage to make this record when Prince (according to his own words) didn't want it to be released? Did he just happen to leave some tapes at the record company's office or what? It was probably the last album he was contractually obliged to deliver to them. They must have made some agreement that 'chaos & disorder' would be released and that WB would get one more 'new' album in the form of "The Vault...Old Friends 4 Sale", which they could release at a later date, whenever they saw fit. Besides, it's not like WB put this album together or chose the songs or running order. It's all Prince's work. He compiled the album. Heck, he even named the thing. "Old Friends 4 Sale" How cynical. Another subtle F.U. to WB. I like this album, but the only thing that keeps pissing me off is that he released the 91 version of Old Friends 4 Sale on it. And that's just a stinker if you've heard the 86 original. Still a nice song, but just nowhere near the original. Prince delivered this disc, along with Chaos And Disorder in Spring of '96 to WB. They were both part of a package deal to get Prince out of his contract. That's why the artwork on both of the discs is matching. The concept was that one was old "Prince" material, while the other was . Warners were the ones who decided to release the albums at different times, and Prince didn't seem too happy about it. His claims that Warner's released the album without his permission were simply his way of protesting the way they handled the releases. I really think that both of these discs have gotten unfair critism. Sure, they are contractual obligation albums, and there isn't anything groundbreaking on them, but both are a lot of fun. These discs are just simple little tunes, but there is such an attitude of Prince just enjoying himself in the studio. I'd rather hear either of these albums that Rave or NPS any day! There are three versions of the song "Old Friend's 4 Sale"in general circulation:
The 'first' version is of the basic tracks recorded during the Parade sessions. From 1985. The 'second' version is of these same basic tracks with the Clare Fischer orchestral overdubs. From 1985. The 'third' version is of these same basic tracks with the Clare Fischer orchestral overdubs with further overdubs and some new Prince vocal lead and background tracks (including new lyrics). From 1991.

He sings REALLY low on that one. That song is like the epitome of a depression...or something. When The Lights Go Down--as some1 said...worth it even if just 4 this song alone. She Spoke 2 Me- that drum solo is just...hmm...wow? Yes, that's the word.
