I have Bi-Polar myself, and I don't think Prince has it.

I could be wrong though.

I'm glad to know we have so many psychiatrists in this club lol how can any possibly say yes or no based on what little you know about his life?

there is so much more to him than we will ever know (or need to for that matter) wink

It's possible to detect mental illness in people you don't know and you don't have to be a psychiatrist either. I'm sure you've seen mentally ill people that you don't know personally, haven't you?.

And no, Prince is not bi-polar.

sure, I have met people I thought were "shy a few cards of a full deck", but that is different.

However, Bipolar is extremely difficult to diagnosis...there can be soooo many other things it could be, one just being their personality wink ....as others have said above, this is typical gemini behavior (I know, I am one lol )

For one to see a small portion of Prince's life and then attempt to diagnosis him as bipolar is impossible. Hell, psychiatrists get it wrong half the time! They said for years my son was ADHD, then came back in his teen years and said oh no, we were wrong, he is bipolar.

Years back, they tried to say I was "bipolar". I never believed it, and as time went by it was obvious that I wasn't, it was just more a trait of my personality from (1) being a gemini, and (2) taking into consideration factors when being raised as a child.

I'm a Gemini, too. That's why I suggested it as a reason.

Your point is well taken, Texie. In all fairness, I think the thread starter was moreso thinking out loud rather than attempting to diagnose. I will say the statement does appear a tad judgemental though. Like Mr7 said, bipolar is serious.

As for the Gemini thing, I'm a Gem also and I've been surrounded by Gems all my life. My grandfather, father, brother, son, godfather and my mate...all Gemini. Never a dull moment around here! lol Gemini is a dual sign, along with Pisces and Libra and for us it's a matter of understanding the dual nature and integrating the two sides.

In many ways, P never seemed like a typical Gem to me. Check out Krystal's rising sign thread in this forum.
Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Thought this was interesting. Reminded me of creative people I know in my family and friends. Prince also.

Biological Basis For Creativity Linked To Mental Illness

Psychologists from the University of Toronto and Harvard University have identified one of the biological bases of creativity.

The study in the September issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology says the brains of creative people appear to be more open to incoming stimuli from the surrounding environment. Other people's brains might shut out this same information through a process called "latent inhibition" - defined as an animal's unconscious capacity to ignore stimuli that experience has shown are irrelevant to its needs. Through psychological testing, the researchers showed that creative individuals are much more likely to have low levels of latent inhibition.
"This means that creative individuals remain in contact with the extra information constantly streaming in from the environment," says co-author and U of T psychology professor Jordan Peterson. "The normal person classifies an object, and then forgets about it, even though that object is much more complex and interesting than he or she thinks. The creative person, by contrast, is always open to new possibilities."
Previously, scientists have associated failure to screen out stimuli with psychosis. However, Peterson and his co-researchers - lead author and psychology lecturer Shelley Carson of Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Harvard PhD candidate Daniel Higgins - hypothesized that it might also contribute to original thinking, especially when combined with high IQ. They administered tests of latent inhibition to Harvard undergraduates. Those classified as eminent creative achievers - participants under age 21 who reported unusually high scores in a single area of creative achievement - were seven times more likely to have low latent inhibition scores.
The authors hypothesize that latent inhibition may be positive when combined with high intelligence and good working memory - the capacity to think about many things at once - but negative otherwise. Peterson states: "If you are open to new information, new ideas, you better be able to intelligently and carefully edit and choose. If you have 50 ideas, only two or three are likely to be good. You have to be able to discriminate or you'll get swamped."
"Scientists have wondered for a long time why madness and creativity seem linked," says Carson. "It appears likely that low levels of latent inhibition and exceptional flexibility in thought might predispose to mental illness under some conditions and to creative accomplishment under others."
For example, during the early stages of diseases such as schizophrenia, which are often accompanied by feelings of deep insight, mystical knowledge and religious experience, chemical changes take place in which latent inhibition disappears.
"We are very excited by the results of these studies," says Peterson. "It appears that we have not only identified one of the biological bases of creativity but have moved towards cracking an age-old mystery: the relationship between genius, madness and the doors of perception."
This research was funded by the Stimson Fund and the Clark Fund at Harvard University and by the Connaught Fund at U of T.

Who knows what mental illness is. I don't know if P is Bipolar 1 or 2 or cyclothymic. It has been well established for years that creativity and possible "Mental Illness" go hand in hand. Big deal. My definition of M.I. has always been how well one functions in the culture they live in. Are they able to support themselves thorugh their actvities and work. P can do both at higher levels than most people I know. Thank God for creativity and mental illness. It's all part of the human condition. Go P go you crazy lil' mother!!

Obviously, it is impossible to diagnose someone as private as Prince. Sure, some of his actions can be interpreted, but to get an overall idea of what makes him tick (or not...), you would have to spend some quality time with him and have fairly honest accounts of his actions and thoughts.

It is not impossible Prince is bipolar. Many people with the disorder hold down jobs, and some great talents are rumoured to be "maniaco-depressive", among thim Francis Ford Coppola.

However, I'd more inclined to believe Prince is simply on the neurotic side. He may have bouts of depression and underlying insecurities for which he compensates in a big way. His ego is big and his defenses go sky high whenever it doesn't feel just so.

In conclusion, I would have to put my money on the Diva Complex Syndrome (see DSM-IV!)
