Extent of Prince's input in Madonna's Like a prayer album Prince must done more than Love Song! Today I listened to my like a prayer cd and I noticed some Prince zest on the bass of Keep it together...
Any more info on this fellow Prince fans?

Read DavidEye's comments in this thread:
http://www.prince.org/msg/7/40919 (It's not clear that Prince's guitar work features on the albums version of the title track, but rather on some remixes) . ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Actually,it was Madonna herself who confirmed that info. There is a lengthy 1989 article on the making of 'Like A Prayer',if I find it,I'll post it here.

the article I mentioned is in Song Talk magazine,Vol.2,issue #11 (summer 1989):
SONG TALK: "Act of Contrition",the closing track on 'Like A Prayer',has backwards masking and other mysterious elements.Did Prince have anything to do with that one? The credits only say "Produced by the powers that be". Madonna: "Yeah,he did.He played guitar on it.He also played guitar on "Keep It Together".

yeah but Madonna also claims she writes her own songs!!!
I bought the re-issue of her first CD (my favorite of hers) and noticed it saysin bold type "ALL SONGS WRITTEN BY MADONNA" when a trip to the US Copyright database shows that all the singles from the alubm were written by other poeple! Moreover, all her later alubms she claims to "write" or really "co-written" by here and whomever her current producer is (i.e. she writes the lyrics)

She's never claimed to write songs she hasn't written, and has always been upfront about everything like that. So don't get it twisted. Her first album doesn't just say "All songs Written by Madonna" It says "All songs Written by Madonna, except 'Borderline' and 'Physical Attraction' written by Reggie Lucas, and 'Holiday' written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens". So there's only 3 tracks she didn't write. And yes, she prefers to co-write songs rather than just do it all herself. Nothing wrong in that, sometimes she's pretty much written the track solo, but because she feels that someone else has had a significant input into the song beyond just 'production', she will credit them. And often it is a genuine collaboration. But yes, she writes her own lyrics, but usually only co-writes the music. But that's because she's always after a 'new sound' and enjoys the process of how her idea for a song can be transformed with the right person from just a half decent track to a interesting and focused potential hit single. Just to clear up Prince's contribution to Madonna's Like A Prayer album...
He co-wrote 'Love Song' with her. Though this track did start off as a solo Prince composition, that was then changed and added to by Madonna. Hence the co-writing credit. It went backwards and forwards between them a few times, so it is a genuine collaboration. Plus he added guitar on two tracks 'Like A Prayer' and 'Keep It Together'. In the end though, his guitar work on 'Like A Prayer' wasn't really used in the final mix (though it does show up in one/some of the remixes). But you can hear some of it in 'Act Of Contrition', which is actually a section of 'Like A Prayer' played backwards with extra vocals etc added. [Edited 7/17/06 23:39pm]

[Edited 7/17/06 23:43pm] My new CD of her debu album, the re-issue (I actually re-bought it) doesn't say that others wrote those three. it just says madonna. Moreover, I once went to the copyright database and looked up all her songs, and 99% if not 100% of her songs were "co-written"..... Given she couldn't play an isntrument til ray of light, i'd bet money the most she does is write lyrics and maybe once in a while hum a melody line. i was always a fan (until recently) but I never deluded myself into thinking she was a musician.

Well, I just pulled out the re-issue of Madonna and checked the credits. It indeed says: "All songs Written by Madonna, except 'Borderline' and 'Physical
Attraction' written by Reggie Lucas, and 'Holiday' written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens". I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Plus she didn't just pick up a guitar for Ray of Light, She played guitar in the band she was in when she first started. There's lots of 'non-musicians' who still 'write' great music. They just need others to translate into reality the ideas and sounds they have in their heads.

So Boris, do you know the names of the remixes for "Keep It Together" and "Like A Prayer" that contain Prince's guitar work?
I remember buying the album just for "Love Song" and when I heard "Act Of Contrition", I was like "if that ain't Prince, then the world has gone topsy-turvey" Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

(atlhough i mnight have been remembering the original CD where mayube it said just her) nevertheless, the credits are still a sham.....according to the Copyright database, Reggie Lucas also wrote Physical Attraction..... so why the sham??? Kind of like Prince and the way he credits or doesn't credit people . Moreover, I once went to the copyright database and looked up all her songs, and 99% if not 100% of her songs were "co-written".....

But i really doubt Madonna could create a song without patrick leanord, stephen breay, William orbit etc. to provide the music And I think she even admitted she only could strum 1 or 2 chords until she took lessons for Ray of Light. well, we all know of the imfamous "Justify My Love" lawsuit but another interesting 'situation' regarding "Candy Perfurme Girl" and Susannah Melvoin. During one of her Largo shows somebody asked her how the song came about and she said she was writing songs with William Orbit and one day she finds out that one of her songs ends up on a Madonna album. She didnt go into any other details other then to say, "yeah...that was interesting" with a very very odd look on her face.

I have the LP and remastered CD versions of the album (gave the regular CD to my sister when I bought the remaster) and the credits are the same for everything. Reggie Lucas got credit for Borderline and Physical Attraction, and Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens are credited for Holiday.

Change a Word
Claim a Third seems to be Madonna's mantra when it comes to song credits The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Exactly.Madonna has never said that she is the female Bob Dylan, and her collaborators are fully credited on her albums. But she writes MOST of her own lyrics (especially on the recent albums) and she has a clear idea of how she wants her music to sound.

Perhaps, but so what? Madonna knows her limitations and she has never tried to pretend that she is the female Mozart. The point is,she has alot of input into her songs. She is not a "producer's puppet" by any means.

I read some interesting comments by Reggie Lucas about the recording of her first album. He says that they clashed repeatedly because Madonna had her own ideas and didn't want to "take orders" from him Even at that early stage of her career, she still had her own vision and ideas.

Yes, it is. It's a VERY brief snippet of the guitar work Prince did for the track. When I first heard "Like A Prayer" on the radio, the version I heard was one of the extended mixes, with a Prince guitar solo at the end. Needless to say, I was pissed when I bought the CD and it didn't have that version on it! I later picked up a maxi-single, which ALSO didn't have that mix! To this day, I've only heard the version with Prince's guitar on it once.
