Irony in Beautiful, Loved and Blessed

Always when I hear this song off 3121 the same thought crosses my mind. Time to share and get it off my chest, hopefully then it will not sidetrack me again. Anyhow...

The lines sung by Tamar "When You found me I was just a piece of clay, eye was aimless, U gave me a new name"

I think Tamar was named Tamar prior to her being involved with P, unlike Carmen, Vanity, and Appolonia, among others. Also Prince does not seem too controlling over her appearance/stage presence, which he has a reputation for past female proteges. Just seems like these lines would have fit a new female friend Prince has totally molded rather than Tamar.

Speaking of Tamar , is her record coming out?

Actually I always thought that line was just a person speeking about a friend that came in your life and gave you direction when you were lost.

But yeah it does seem Prince is much looser with Tamar...strict in the fact that he demands 110% of her energy but loose in the fact that he probably allowes her to dress how she wants and maybe she even gets some imput on songs she wants to cover. Much different than his past female proteges.

i think this is one of the most sincere tracks on the album,
especially P's voice at the beginning of his part in the duet.

their relationship appears nothing but professional to me.
and i sense their 'friendship' has been nothing but helpful to P
during this difficult time. i really liked the hug HE REACHED FOR HER ON SNL.
cause she was so not expecting it. and it appeared HE NEEDED THE HUG omg
she generously and graciously gave it to him. i enjoyed seeing HIM
"vulnerable" on stage, performing such a sweet, heart-based song.

i think the point of the song, like many of P's songs is multi-faceted.
it has a biblical reference (potter/clay), but perhaps it was inspired
by a real friend in real life that he put into a biblical and universal framework.

innocent i'm just sad for her that HER album's not happenin' . . .

I totally agree. The song does appear to have a double meaning. It's not just a straight forward song about God, it's also a song about a friendship(platonic) between two people.

Here's a gif of the hug. P looked to be very proud of his mentee.

Unfortunately though, sometimes love will find you when you are not even thinking about it, and they do spend a lot of time in the studio together. Sometimes things happen unexpectingly.

I am SURE both Carmen and Appolonia used those names BEFORE they hooked up with prince.. i MIGHT be mistaken with Carmen but I KNOW Appolonia did.

Wrong on both counts. Both have stated that Prince came up with their stage names. Prince got "Apollonia" after watching The Godfather (Michael Corleone's first wife was named "Apollonia").

Several reasons:

When U found me, I was just a piece of clay
I was formless, U gave me a new name
With the breath of life I now live abundantly
All I needed was the potter's hand

As previously mentioned, this is a reference to Isaiah 64:8.

And the blood on Calvary

Calvary is the name of the hill where Christ was crucified.

But 2 much power (Tell it)
Can sometimes turn 2 shame
2 much desire
Sometimes make U feel the same (Come on)
But 4giveness is how U win the game
I begged 4 truth, now I know the truth
And that is when U came and said I was...

Forgiveness? Truth? This is Prince writing this, so religious meanings of these words are pretty clear in this context.

Everything U made U said, "That's good"
B4 the fall of man U said, "That's good"
Every time I walk in faith, that's good
U let me see another day, that's good

"Everything U made"? Sounds like God to me.

Talk of "the fall of man" is also a Biblical reference. "walking in faith"? Sounds pretty much like a spiritual spin. "U let me see another day"? If this was "just a friend", as some have suggested, then how do have the power of life or death over this person?

B4 the earth was made U said, "Támar,
I will lead the way and U'll go far"

So, who could make declarations before the earth was made? hmmm

I certainly think SOME of Prince's songs could have dual-meanings, but not this one. This tune is pretty straight-forward in its spiritual message.

this is definitely prince talking about himself and his own experience here! tamar is just a mouthpiece.
