I would say Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Kiss, and surprisingly, even more than 1999, I think people think of Little Red Corvette when they think of Prince. I would also say this because these are radio favorites.

Purple Rain. But I think Kiss gets the most airplay on the oldies stations.

I find that when I talk about P to people they name Cream more than other songs.

I'd say "Purple Rain".
It really irritates me when I wear purple to work, and a coworker or student will say that I wore it because I like Prince, or sing it to me when I enter a room.
-OR- When I say I've been to a show and someone says "I like 'Purple Rain' like that's all he sang for 2 hours.

Purple Rain, even though my personal choice would be When Doves Cry, but realistically speaking, it´s got to be Purple Rain.

But I think coming in second place would be Little Red Corvette, then 1999,

Purple Rain - if you asked people to associate purple with something, I think Prince or Purple Rain would more than likely come up pretty quick, even though if you asked them what purple rain actually was, they'd struggle to explain it! Culturally it is a phrase that has just sunk in. And it's the reason Universal used purple in their Purple ticket promotion.

Seriously, how many "journalists" can write anything about Prince without referencing Purple.

Purple Rain is the song he's best known by. If you meet someone that knows nothing about Prince or his muisc, they will still mostlikely associate Prince and Purple Rain.
