Great, overlooked songs that Prince has given to others...

Yeah, there's always the big ones... like Get It Up and A Love Bizarre... but what are some of your favorite songs that Prince has given to other people, that you don't see talked about very often?

I can think of 4 right off the top of my head, though 2 of them are often-discussed:

1) Open Book.... though unfortunately, I prefer Prince's outtake to Jevetta Steele's released version. This song perfectly conveys that sense of melancholy and resignation. I get goos bumps every time I hear Prince's version.

2) Love... Thy Will Be Done.... wow, it's so awesome. As with Open Book, I can't believe he gave away TWO suck kick-ass songs as these, especially at a time (late 90/early 91) when he really could have used a hit.

3) Hit U In The Socket .... Rosie Gaines. I *LOVE* the unreleased early version of this. It's so upbeat and fun. (The released version from NPGMC sucks though).

4) 100 M.P.H. this one is very fun too!

So anyway, what are some of yours? Released or unreleased, I don't care.

good one! That song was the first time in a long time that I'd been impressed with his social commentary.

Yeah, me too. Paris1798430 was another one that had the same effect on me, and it's from the same album. He gave Tevin some good stuff.

I've always loved the song Eternity. Really like Chaka's version, don't care at all for Sheena's version. But I've always wanted to hear a fully produced Prince version of Eternity.

Yo Mister...this is one of the best songs written, EVER.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

oh shit! I can't believe I forgot "Standing At The Altar" by Margie Cox! i fucking adore this song. despite the lyrics, it's so poppy and joyful and upbeat.

i think if he'd kept this one, it would have been a great follow-up to The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.

I don't even think he should have kept it for himself. That one just had single potential period!!!! Margie was a helluva talent... and it should have been released soonafter it was recorded.

Pretty much anything from the golden years is on par with his stuff from the period.

One of my fav's that never gets much of a mention is Jill Jone's 'My Man', a very cool little pop number. dancing jig

1,000 Hugs and Kisses
The Screams of Passion
Nothing Compares 2 U
Allegiance
If I Could Get Your Attention

Desire
- any of a variety of those tracks recorded by The Time

I mention "Nothing Compares.." because, to this day, most people STILL don't know that this was a Prince song.

whoknows

One song a lot of folks round here don't appreciate which I think is a total trip is Romance 1600 for Sheila E. It's one of those quirky story songs Prince used to do so well.

That could be easily argued as one of the Best songs he ever gave to someone, but it is hardly "overlooked".
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

A good song to give away though I think, okay Prince could easily change the line about dreaming of Valentino to something more macho but Prince working a 9 to 5 job? Nah, completely unbelievable! Fantastic that he could get into the mindset of an average joe living for the weekend, though.

Love...Thy Will Be Done--Martika
Mutiny--The Family
High Fashion--The Family
Screams of Passion--The Family
Mia Bocca--Jill Jones
Baby You're a Trip--Jill Jones
Sugar Walls--Sheena Easton (although I don't see how Prince could have ever released this himself. A guy singing 'come spend the night inside my sugar walls' wouldn't make sense... lol )
The Sex of It--Kid Creole & the Coconuts
If Eye Love U 2nite--Mayte boxed
Red Head Stepchild--Tamar (if it ever gets released)

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
