Steve Nash on Prince's B'Ball Skills

(Globe and Mail)You've probably met a lot of musicians, some of them who claim to have 'game.' Are any of those guys any good at basketball? I heard Prince has some talent.

(Nash)Really? I heard the opposite. My agent, Billy Duffy, played basketball at the University of Minnesota right around the start of Prince's career, and he used to play pickup ball with him. So, as for Prince, in Billy's words, "Not a really good player." [Laughs.] I'm sure he's gonna love me for throwing him under the bus there.

All I know is he's a professional ball player (basketball probably, considering the nature of the conversation). What does his knowledge of music have to do with anything? They're talking about basketball

You serious? I could give two shits about sports of any variety and I know who Steve Nash is.

His opinion of Prince as a bad player is no doubt influenced by his own skill. Compared to Steve Nash, damn few could be said to be any good at basketball.

Steve Nash is reigning MVP of the NBA and has won the award the past 2 years, completely revitalizing the Phoenix Suns. I'm sure Prince is nowhere near good enough to be even a collegiate level player, but I bet he's decent.

I'm pretty sure I could beat Steve in a game of one-on-one...his skills aren't that impressive.

But, put him on a team of high-flyin' brothas...and, eek , he's MVP!

Larry Legend? Never! Their games are different though....Bird was a true MVP.

Nash is more my size, adequate shooter. There is no one to pass the ball to in a game of one on one, thus my statement...Yeah, I could take him. nod

Prince on Prince B'Ball skills...from Prince by Steve Ivory
pg26

"My older brother was the basketball and football star. He always had all the girls around him and stuff like that. I think I must have been on a jealous trip, because I got out of sports. I wasn't bad at basketball but my brother was better, and he wouldn't let me forget it. When I did get a band, the first thing I did was bring it to school, play the homecoming dance, and say,'look at THIS'. It was something they couldn't do."

I'm sure Prince enjoys watching Steve Nash play basketball and that Steve Nash owns more than half of the Prince collection. Weren't the Phoenix Suns at the bottom of the league before Nash arrived and went to the finals after he got there? I think he was the only significant change. Something to be said for team work. Maybe that's why he got the MVP.
I would say if you can beat any pro player you probalby need to change careers. In this case, contact the Phoenix Suns and see if you can get Nash's job. Let us know how that goes. Sensitivities aside, Nash appears to be a nice guy..i'm sure he meant no offense.

This blurb is not so much about what Steve Nash thinks but what his agent Bill Duffy thinks of P's skills or lack thereof.

Anyhoo, seems odd that two men over six feet tall are seriously surprised that someone 5'3 who is not a pro basketball player (yeah I know Muggsy Bouges is also 5'3) is not as good as they are at the game. Well duh.

It is about Nash agent's opinion. Who knows the agent may dislike prince or his music. He may think he looks crazy playing in all that make up. He may not be able to see how he could get interest in P from NBA teams. Therefore no dough for him. biggrin

But, the most likely reason is that he represents the Freakin MVP of the NBA and has forgotten that not many play like Nashy.

I bet prince could have run rings around all of um back in the day.

He was nicknamed Superball for a reason. Or was it Skipper or Peanut, oh hell he was fast I'm sure. Maybe just had trouble getting his shot off.

Didn't Prince play Michael Jordan @ Paisley Park around 2000/2001 & beat him?
I'm sure I read that & saw a picture of the match on the early incarnation of the NPG online site.

So ur sayin u can take a guy who averaged 19 ppg, and shot 51% from the field (ranked #16 in the NBA)/44% from 3 point range (#6)...and just happens to be the reigning NBA MVP...2 years in a row?

What NBA team do u play for? stoned
