After getting a Dolby pro logic hi fi i realise Prince's music sounds horrible! I'm talking about the recording, mixing, mastering!
I didn't even notice anthing was wrong on my old cheap hi fi. For e.g little red corvette is horribly mixed and the vocals sound awful and screechy. I wanna be your lover has too loud, distorted bass which ruins the song When doves cry has a clicking sound which is heard in hip hop records which souns shit. I also noticed crackling on gett off in two places and there's dozens more! I wish i never bought it now; Technics Dolby surroun sound, 360 watt with sub woofer; makes every in descretion noticable!

I think you should note all of these glitches down and then update us every day or so on new ones. I think the market is there for this type of thing.

that's not the problem, the recordings are terrible; it's spoiling my Prince collection

The crackling in 'Gett Off' is deliberate.
The other songs you mentioned have not been remastered. They were merely transfered from record to CD format. I'm not sure what you expect from songs that are over 20 years old.

No, I've caught it too...and I don't even have the world's best system...The only thing I can suggest is that you listen to it on a less-advanced and clear system, it worked for you up until now didn't it?

How dare you.
I've got a cracking Sony system and they all sound great to me. There are glitches, but like someone said before, the songs are 20 years old. Even Thriller had glitches in it before it was re-mastered but there is such a thing as "Musical snobbery". If we all looked for flaws in the everyday things we enjoyed, they would become less enjoyable....so what's the point? [Edited 6/22/06 12:30pm]

Simple advice: put that high-tech shit into e-bay or in the bin and get your old low-tech stuff back. Then have a great funky party with some unremastered Prince music.

Little Red Corvette does have vocals that burn up too hot, but I bet that's how the track was recorded. But everything else is fine. I wanna be your lover's bass is too loud? I never noticed this. Is it like that on the hits cd collection? Gett Off's crackling is on purpose when the record is played, or are you talking about something else? My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

when doves cry has a "clicking sound"? huh? I have never heard anything irritating in that mix, and I have very expensive Sennheiser (top of the line) headphones... and a good Denon amp with NHT speakers My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

People worry way too much about the production/mixing side of things. Its definitely important but people seem to be obsessed by it. Perhaps its the lack of good songwriting and playing these days that shifts all the interest to production. Bah!..y'all are spoiled babies...I grew up listening to vinyl, often with several coins placed on the stylus to stop it from jumping when it hit one of the numerous scratches...someone hand me my walking frame!...I'm outta here! In the studio, Prince was more worried about the groove. He rarely EVER took the time to get a mix right. He was more into the feeling, rather than the technical side. Its funny, but there were MANY times when the engineers would ask to have a little more time on the song to get it right, or a little more time on setting up the board. "You're losing the groove" would be a phrase that almost every engineer would hear at one time.
Prince knew a great deal about mixing but not enough to make it perfect. Perfection was not his goal. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. mikek1 said: I also noticed crackling on gett off in two places! LMAO. Bless - its deliberate, he says 'Reminds me of something James used to say' then samples James Brown, the crackling is the sound of vinyl playing, I can't believe you hadn't heard that before! But yeah, we're all waiting a remastering, supposedly vinyl mastering on his old records are better than the cd versions.

to be honest, I think the distortion on the track little red corvette is on purpose, it's a production technique prince has used more recently on money don't matter to night, his vox are like that most of the way through and on a couple of other tracks.
Get off, well everyone about that time was added some vinyl hiss and crackle to their records, bit of a cliche really. To me, the worst is the mastering on love sexy, it's a really dry, and over harsh mid range sounding album, quite hard on the ears. As others said, this isn't musical snobbery, if you deal with production you notice it. Another production note, parade is simply genius (for it's production). I wonder you being an all time favourite. As for the prologic, there is no point listening to stereo tracks through a prolic system, unless it was mixed in pro logic. the way prologic works is by lots of clever phase shifting, on encoded tracks, so putting something through which wasn't encoded, isn't going to give you the best results. stick back to stereo.

"Yeah my whole bootleg collection SOUNDS TERRIBLE! How could Prince do this to me? "
It really should never be about sound quality for the listener. For the engineers sure, but those recordings are enough fine for anybody to listen to. Of course, I personally do need to boost the bass up on the old Prince albums to get anything out of them, but it's just a small hand move on my part.

I wouldn't even know what kind of use I'd have for Prologic at all.

guess i've wasted hundreds of pounds.
I can simply listen without pro logic and just use surround sound and a sub woofer!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Geek hat on:
Prologic, is the old analogue standad for playing movies in surround mode, really it was only an extra centre speaker for dialgoue and a back speaker in mono, which wasn't that great. The modern equivelant is dolby digital, which basically is the standard that every commercial film meets. 3 speakers at the front, and two in stereo at the back and one for a sub. all discrete audio channels, as opposed to prologic, which was an unencoded stereo file. geek hat off!! why anyone would by a prologic system in this day and age is beyond me.

So pro logic doesn't sound better as far as cds go.
Damn i wish i didn't spend so much money but at least i can listen to super sound eq without pro logic turned on.
