Prince: Shred that guitar on "Fury" at BET Awards

I harken back to a discussion a couple years ago I had with a close friend of mine who is black. He said, "Black people don't like guitar in their music. It's all about the bass." I disagreed with him.

I am a funk and roller at heart and it would be great to see Prince tear the guitar up on "Fury" at the BET Awards. A heavy dose of funk jams and a rockin' tune like "Fury". Everybody needs a dose of six-string in their diet.

dream on...he'll probably do the weak Get on The Boat, Lollita or Satisfied. I'm glad I had my VCR going when he did Fury on SNL.

your friend is clearly under the impression black people didnt start making music until the early eighties. has he never heard of bb king? jimi hendrix? eddie hazell? michael hampton? ernie isley? chuck berry? buddy guy? charlie christian? wes montgomery? grant green?

tell him to educate himself on the cultural history of his own race as he clearly knows very little about it. ignorance like that is exactly the reason prince SHOULD play fury at the bet awards

Even in the 80s, there were plenty of black shredders... The two that come to mind for me, and prolly for a lot of shred fans are "Tony Macalpine" and "Greg Howe"...

The popularity of hip-hop and rap have really skewed the public's perception...

Wow, Greg Howe. That brother is amazing. I have an album with him, Victor Wooten and Dennis Chambers. Amazing stuff.

No, black people don't usually like rock. Better that Prince play piano, like Stevie Wonder, really show them how he can cook. No, band, just him and the grand piano.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

the only thing that'd make that awards ceremony anywhere close to worthwhile is ol' boy telling BET point-blank that they're total jive-asses nowadays.

Obviously he is talking about Mainstream Black America because Mainstream Black America DOES NOT like any of those artists that any of you mentioned. They know who Nelly is but I"m sorry they don't even have the slightest idea who Victor Wooten is.
I remember a few years ago on "Who Wants to be a Millionare" they had a celebrity showdown. R & B/Hip Hop artist Tyrese did not know what instrument George Benson is best known for. Didn't have a clue. He could even guess from a choice of four. What kind of disgraceful fucking bullshit is that??? That's what's out there. That's what he means by "Black People".

That's fucking sad right there and he's in the music industry. Pathetic. I don't care what Prince performs as long as he tears that shit up and has everyone talking about it next week.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

idiot alert...the weak Get on the Boat?...just a dumb statement

I would hope P would go on BET and play songs suited for the audience that will be viewing the performance.

Only on this rock heavy fan forum would such a moronic statement be made. I will also tell you this if P played the version of Fury like it sounds on 3121 he would be laughed off the stage

Wooten isn't a mainstream act so the same applies for mainstream white America. Those that know of Wooten are probably 50/50 black to white...just not mainstream.

I think he'd be better suited to perform straight r&b on this particular show.

I think you underestimate and over generalize the BET/black viewing audience. Black America may not listen to much rock but I honestly believe that even the hip-hop, rap gen prefer Prince the rocker and would be more that thrilled to have him rock out. Redhead or Fury could work...or maybe he'll do something completely new.

BTW, how many songs will he perform?

If Prince knows whats good for him on BET, he'll play "Black Sweat", "Love", or either of the two with a old school track like "Adore".

Black folx love "ADORE" according to Stephen Hill, from BET!

what's with all the generalisation?

"black folks love this"

wtf?

smile

so if my black friend asks me for another prince guitar
compilation i should just tell him "no, you are black,
so i will make you a funk compilation and put Adore on
it as well because that is what you like"

falloff

please people, taste is individual.

I think it's obvious that he's going to play Incense and Candles. He seems to be on a roll with playing all of the hit songs from 3121 on tv, Fury, Lolita, Satisfied, Te Amo Corazon.. now it's clearly time for I&C which sounds very much like it's intended for the hip-hop type crowd... ie black people.

I was thinking that - he almost seems intent on doing a tv performance of every song from 3121! But I'd prefer to hear 'Love' over IandC or even a much belated live version of Black Sweat.

Most likely Black Sweat or Incense and Candles, as those tunes have the most R and B flavor to them. I would also like to heart a real hot version of The Dance especially with Prince screaming at the end!
