Wow, I was in my bedroom of my father's house listening to the radio and remember thinking how different it was than anything else being played on the radio. " a newborn child knows nothing of destruction, nothing of love & hate"

on MTV when the video just came out... might have even been the "world premiere."
those were the days. | |

I was on a Greyhound. Returning to Detroit from a trip to my Aunt's house in East Chicago, Indiana. We were at a rest stop and a car pulled in with the radio blasting "When Doves Cry". I was like, "Wow, that sounds just like Prince."
Of course, none of the people in the seats around me knew who the heck I was talking about, so I couldn't get confirmation that it was until I heard the Electifying Mojo later that evening.

We were watching Ready to Roll (NZ Chart show at the time) on a Saturday night and some video featuring a guy with purple clothes came on, and in my 8 year old mind I thought it was either the new Boy George or Michael Jackson song, instead it was by someone called Prince and promptly forgot it, until about 89. I was obsessed with the Culture Club in those days (first time my mother worried I was gay when I liked dressing up as Boy George with her frocks) 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

I'll never forget it. It was a June afternoon when the radio played it for the first time around 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. It was the summer between my 11th and 12th grade year. I heard it on my mother's console stereo at full blast. They played the long version and I absolutely loved the screams in the song.
It seemed like weeks before the 45 was released and I was disappointed because it faded out before the screams. Of course, I had already recorded the long version off the radio on an 8 Track tape. Then, I waited for the album to be released. . . [Edited 6/14/06 7:14am] Andy is a four letter word.

I caught the end of the video on MTV. They mentioned it was for a movie called Purple Rain, and I thought to myself, "Wow, that's cool. Prince did a song for a movie." Then I saw the whole video later and started to realize that Prince was the movie! I went crazy. My mission in life throughout the summer was to see that movie!!! Oh yeah, and I loved the song -- except that I thought there was no way Prince could ever do better than 1999, not even commercially. lol

those were the days. Yes they were! MTV actually played music videos... and there were videos you could actually get excited about! Prince in a bathtub seemed to naughty & rad back in the day, for a commercial effort.

I think I was in my stroller. But my earliest memory of the song was dancing to it in my diapers. Yep, even when I was a baby I knew I heard something amazing. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

The latest, greatest video being played every hour. And making sure my folks weren't around to see Prince slinking outta that bathtub! tum edit... I have NO IDEA. I was 6 years old...But I do remember the first time I saw titties involved When Doves Cry. I was watching Purple Rain at my Uncles House....and Appolonia graced the screen in natural glory.

I probably first heard this song either in my car while driving or in my room. What's funny is every time that song came on the radio, at first I didn't like it. I would think to myself, "Eww, there's that WEIRD song again!" Of course, it grew on me, and I began to like it.
What's even funnier is remembering sitting on the couch watching the "When Doves Cry Video" with the guy I was dating at the time. I remember saying to him, "I'm not going to see that movie; it looks DUMB!" My then boyfriend said something about wanting to see the movie just to check out what kind of motorcycle Prince had. How times change, huh? RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I must have been watching some cheesy 80's video countdown on MTV- When Doves Cry was on the list. I had never heard of this song, but the guy in it sort of looked like Michael Jackson, especially with the hat in his mirror dancing scene. So, I liked him because I was obsessed with Michael Jackson at the time.

It was the late spring of 1984.I had just got home from school and turned on the radio. The song came on and I yelled to my sister "Hey,I think this is the new Prince song!".For some reason,we weren't totally sure that it was Prince. But then we heard the scream part ("yeah....yeah....yeah....yeaaaaahhhhh") and that gave it away

I think I might've heard it in the car once as a kid while my dad was driving. I didn't think much of it. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
