Tom Petty talks about the HOF Performance!

There's a new book of interviews w/ TP called Conversations with Tom Petty, and, in it, he says that it was cool to play with Prince at the HOF. He said that he doesn't think he ever would've gotten to perform with Prince if not for that event. He said that he's always admired Prince and that he enjoyed meeting him. He seemed surprised to learn that Prince was a big fan of his. The interviewer then mentioned Prince's guitar solo and Petty responded like this: "Oh man! It blew the whole thing right out there!" All in all, it was pretty cool to read this. Petty is one of the all-time good guys in rock music, and I'm glad he has a favorable view of performing with Prince.

That's cool to hear as I thought Tom was pissed at P for showboating during George's moment. The look he gave Prince was kinda scary/funny.

Yeah, I worried about that, too, but then I watched it again and did notice TP grinning at some of P's antics. TP is always very deadpan in his demeanor, and I think it was wrongly perceived that he didn't approve of P's showboating.

It was Prince's moment, too, after all. I thoght as long as George's son was pleased (and he was), that's what matters.

i never knew people thought prince showboated. shrug what would be the point in going up and paying to tribute to someone and only doing it half-assed? i think that would be insulting.

Thanks for this thread. I always like it when Prince jams with other artist from his generations.

Yes! I thought the same thing. At first, I thought Petty was totally into the performance, even mimicing crouching down when Prince did it, but then I looked at his face and I didn't know if he approved or disapproved of P's performance.

Dhani, of course, was pleased as punch. smile

Honestly, the song was kinda dragging along till Prince came in and lit it up like that. It was missing the dramatic sound of the studio version. They were all moaning out the lyrics in monotone, and looked baked out of their minds. Prince came in and really lit the song on fire. In all fairness, Prince was one of the inductees that night, so it's not like he was overstepping his welcome by playing his ass off like that.

showboating, grandstanding, feeling it... WHATEVER you call it, P was going for it, and I for one thank him for doing so. To me, it just seemed there was some "Look at this lil' mufucka. Who does he think he is?" Maybe it's 'cuz only Dhani and Prince were smiling. Everybody else looked so somber. And I agree with NDRU, so long as Dhani was pleased, fuck 'em. I heard that after that he was running around backstage looking saying "Where's Prince? I just wanna give him a hug." touched

I don't think it's the playing that they meant, it's the theatrics--especially storming off the stage like you're the shit rather than acknowledge anyone else on the stage. But like I said, If Dhani liked it that's all that matters.

That's what I'm saying, I don't think anyone had a problem with his guitar playing.

Actually, George's son said immediately after the performance that he wished he knew where Prince was so he could give him a big hug. He looked like a star struck FAM. lol

Noone there mentioned having a problem with him walking off stage either, so I believe all is well.

As long as Dhani didn't look P in the eye.....

Prince woke those guys up and I think George R.I.P as a guitar player would've appreciated P playing his butt off.

mmm... no. mad

the song and performance was incredible even without Prince, you had Tom Petty Jeff Lyne singing, it was amazing, they sounded so on. and I am a huge fan of the Beatles and love the demo and studio verson of this song. It sounded huge and epic, and AWESOME. Prince just added a supernatural amount of good drama on top of that making it emotionally overwhelming if you were a fan of both the Beatles, ELO, Tom Petty and Prince. It was magic. oops I forgot Steve winwood.

The song is called "While my guitar gently weeps". It was time for someone to enter the stage and play the hell out of a guitar before the other old men up there completely transferred it into a John Denver tribute, LOL. O.k., "gently weeps" might not fully meet it, it was more like he tore the house down with the Hohner...

First, I thought he pissed of Tom, but when I watched the clip for about the 100th time, I realized that Petty obviously enjoyed it.

Walking out and going to housequake... biggrin

I was always worried that Petty might have thought Prince was over-stepping his mark,im a big fan of Tom Petty also, so its great to hear that Petty admires Prince.
For what it matters the highlight of that clip for me is seeing Dhanni(sp?) Harrisons face when Prince is playing,he is loving it,and that was the biggest compliment that Prince was going to recieve for his performance,on that song, that night.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

i always thought the look on petty's face was "omg i am seeing something special here"
i never thought he was pissed at prince

prince did that shit on purpose
i love it when prince has swagger
the whole grandstanding, etc was based on the fact that he gets ZERO respect in the guitar world
i think around that time, rolling stone had an article about the 100 greatest guitarists and p was left off
of course in classic p fashion, he showed them (the critics, peers, industry)
everytime i watch that clip, i get goose bumps
made me feel proud 2 be a prince fan again
that performance is might be my fav tv performance of his
besides that one and the baby i'm a star from the 85 grammies!
minor keys and drugs don't make a rollerskate jam
