awards are just a way of filling up the hole inside us that are created by exoteric vanity - so it seems and keep in mind that the folks who give out these awards arent aware of the many many other artists in the world that were doing it long before him What's George's site?

"Tamar. Milk. Honey. Come. Soon."
In fact, I think his Brits 1995 award speech was a trial run: "Prince. Best? The Gold Experience. Better. On record. Slave. On stage. Perfectly free. Come. Peace. Be Wild." or something along those lines.

Um he hasn't done a thing with 3121 on the internet. And Obviously they don't know about the "lack" of music he has to offer on his site. Which lack of music would that be? At last count there were 12 singles, 12 albums and 6 videos available for download at NPGMC. Of those, 11 of the singles and 6 of the albums aren't available anywhere else. I've yet to find another musician's website that has anywhere near that amount of exclusive material on it. Hence why I put it as "lack"...meaning The Glam Slam Room and Reflection. I can't seem 2 find any other musician's website that can hold a candle 2 NPGMC. It's probably because they haven't caught up 2 Prince's level yet. Maybe, if Michael Jackson would follow in Prince's footsteps, he'd probably make back at least half the debt he owe let alone have a hit record both financially and recognizably (is that a word?).

Prince will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at this year's Webby online awards for his use of the Internet to distribute music and connect with audiences. Bwahahahahaha! Yeah, let's forget about Prince SUING fan websites. That really connected him with his audience. sheeplikeone said: The 47-year-old pop superstar was the first major artist to release an entire album, 1997's "Crystal Ball," exclusively on the Web,
EXCLUSIVELY? First of all CB wasn't initially available online, only VIA PHONE ORDERS. Secondly, that album wasn't exclusive at all, considering it was in stores BEFORE it turned up in people's mailboxes. sheeplikeone said: according to the announcement, and "long before MySpace and iTunes, Prince used the Web as a new way to distribute music, premiere videos and build his relationship with his fans."

Dude, get educated. How 'bout Metallica, selling recordings of an ENTIRE TOUR via their site? How 'bout Pearl Jam who've been doing that for years? How 'bout Beck et al who've set up web cams while they were doing rehearsals? How 'bout BobDylan.com, where I can find TONS of info (like LYRICS) -- FOR FREE? Yeah, there's a whole lot of excellent artist sites out there, and very few of them want $25 just to show you a bunch of lame Flash animations and the "opportunity" to buy a whole lot of drm-protected tracks that you then never listen to again. I still recall that in year 1 of NPGMC they usually didn't even manage to fill the MINIMUM of what they promised. I also recall that they offered an mp3 of a song taken from a CASSETTE -- an OFFICIALLY released cassette single. I also recall the videos that were ripped from bootlegged tv performances. Etcetera. Oh yes, Metallica... talk about alienating your fanbase... Metallica vs. Napster Bart? Does your FAULTLESS memory recall that little "issue"? How's that for "bonding" with your fans? How 'bout Beck et al who've set up web cams while they were doing rehearsals?
I'll bet no one's watching though... that guy is FINISHED, dig? How 'bout BobDylan.com, where I can find TONS of info (like LYRICS) -- FOR FREE?

Along those lines, check out the store on the Grateful Dead site...tons of legacy concert recordings and "vault" material for sale. http://gdstore.com/ "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. No matter if Metallica and Beck are good or not, finished or not, they offer some exclusive and very interesting things to their fans Prince sued lots of fan websites in the past, but I would still be a member (hard for me, I dont have an international credit card, I would have to pay for it) if he offered me the chance to download his rehearsals and live concerts. But I wont do this effort only to have a chance to download "SST" (in crappy .wma format) or albums that are released in stores. [Edited 6/4/06 5:44am]

I've just seen a very quick report on BBC News 24 about the Webby's, they mentioned Prince was getting a reward and showed a clip from the ceremony with a presenter in front of footage of Prince (from circa '96 I think...).

Was on BBC news this morning, footage of prince singing, I assumed it was from the ceremony? Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

Prince played Don't Play Me at the ceremony, in case no one noticed yet. Very cool outfit. Apparently crashed his acoustic guitar. Said something along the lines of "everything you believe...is true." - reports vary on that.

Look closely, I wrote TWO post in this thread, one that ripped the press release to shreds, and another one that supplied proof that there are plenty of artist sites that offer far more than NPGMC (and don't want you to pay $25 just to look at it). Everything that you said has ZERO value because it doesn't disprove the point I made. © Bart Van Hemelen

Seriously, Marty, your points were weak at best. Beck is finished? Huh? Sea Change was an absolutely massive critical success, and Guero was also well received. What kind of silly comment was that? And regardless of Metallica's past battles with Napster, the fact remains that their free site offers a lot of very interesting material for its hardcore fanbase.
Prince's five word acceptance speech should've just been "Music no one wants." That's about all that's available on his site. Nothing tantalizing from the Vault, just garbage like The Slaughterhouse or SST. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
