Straw Poll : 3121 Will be Considered a Classic Prince Album in the Future

The album is grand. I hated the Dance but the sucker has crept under my skin! Prince hasn't done that to me for years! I took a rest for a couple of weeks from the album and it's even better now than when I heard it the first time: Mark of a Classic in the making!

Vote Yay or Nay below: Will this album be considered a Classic in the Future?

Personally, I don't know if this will be considered a classic, but I think it will go down in music history as one of the most impressive comebacks, along with 2004's Musicology, Prince has ever had. I mean, 3121 is an amazing record, nevertheless.

Yup.

This album is great. The only thing different is the times.

No matter how good an album he releases, Prince can never commercially duplicate the success of the 80's. And unfortunately that is the bar we have set. Everything is different in o6
Whether we want to admit it or not how much we like an album is somehow, on some level, tied to its commercial exposure and success.

Prince succeeded, we have failed by not recognizing how good this album is.

All in good time....

Prince. Thank-you. Once again your music has touched me.

And "The Dance Electric" (the full 12 minute version) will be worthy enough to be released...

Comeback?? A one or two week #1 based on a willy wonka-esqe scam does not a comeback make.

No way does this cd become a "classic"

Well, I don't know about the whole CD becoming a classic in the future, but the song "Love" will definitely become one, it's beautiful-nice lyrics and music music rainbow.

It already is a classic for me because I'm enjoying 3121 as much as I have any album in Prince's catalog.

Now, does that mean I think it's as daring as 1999? No. As genre-busting as SOTT? No. As wonderfully quirky as Parade? No. But that really doesn't matter to me. All I know is that 3121 has already provided me with more joyful spins than any Prince album since that amazing run in the 1980s.

Peace, David

hmmm No, I don't think so. I think I liked Musicology a little better and I don't consider that a classic.

It's a great album, but what really would make it a classic is if it was followed by absolutely amazing concerts! Like SOTT. headbang

I don't know if this album would be a classic... but it is far from being a bad album.

My classics are SOTT, 1999, Purple Rain and The Gold Experience.

I totally agree with you on this - yes it will be considered a classic

Theres been alot of negative feedback on this album but in around 10-20 years time - those people who criticised it will probably admit they were wrong

Just like those who criticised ATWIAD and Lovesexy to name but a few...

I think people forget that its EVERY album he releases that gets the shit ripped out of it by the 'critics' then put up there with the greatest a few years later...

the only reason he gets so critiqued (more than alot of other artists) is simply because he is who he is..

Prince's music is like a fine wine - matures with age - I dont know why but it does

To me - no other artist whos been around as long as him has music which is as fresh today as it was back then...

Im a fan of Madonna - but I really dont think alot of her music could get away with being played today - for example 'Material Girl' She always seems to modernise her old music when u hear here sing it live etc.

Theres so much of P's music that was so far ahead of its time - even in the late 70's early 80's

Take 'I wanna be ur lover' , 'Bambi', 'when u were mine' for example

they just stand out to me as modern songs that you would hear today...

Thats why he astounds me so much and thats why Im such a fan...

This is IMO by the way - I know some wont agree with a thing I have said..

no.

By a longshot, it's not even my fave album of the year so far.

I don't fancy it's chances of becoming a 'classic' Prince album at all.

Average.

Not a chance. It'll be seen as a better than average P album during his nice little comeback. In fact, I bet a lot of these recent albums will be out of print in the future, with only a few tracks making it onto comps.

Tally after 2 days voting and 15 votes counted:

Yes a Classic for me : 5 = 33%

Fencesitters: 4 = 26%

Nope not a classic for me: 6 = 40%

So with a small sample of the fan base reporting, the majority don't think this will be a classic.....What do the rest of you think?

Optimistic speculation.....

Perhaps with age, over a lengthy period of time of a hundred years or so (if the planet and civilization is still here), maybe the entire canon, the entire body of work, will be considered classic.

....then again, maybe they'll all be laughing at us!

Together with Musicology it COULD be constrivedas a minor comeback, but albums tend to be called classics if they MOVE people.

Prince's classics; Dirty Mind, Purple Rain, Parade and Sign The Times were all albums that excelleed in something; superb songwriting.

The songwriting in 3121 is, though refreshing after years of 'difficult' albums, not special enough to stand out more than just refreshing. There is no CLASSIC song on there, no song people from all around the world will hum, like Raspberry Beret or bang their heads to, like When Doves Cry or simply touch people, like Purple Rain.

Ahem. No 1999? Bad hamster!

I wouldn't call 3121 a classic per se, but I do love it to bits.
