He said about Rave: "even though it wasn't a good album to begin with" not "even though it was a god-aful mess to begin with", not "even though it would've made a 4-yr-old chimpanzee composer hide his head in shame to begin with". just "wasn't god". [Edited 5/24/06 20:35pm] Exactly. And damn if he didn't just bend over backwards and pander to everything he once so credibly despised – all in a desperate marketing attempt to selvage an album that is DOA and to get his ass kissed by the media. It reeked of tackiness and was so 'vegas lounge singer'. Am I the only one thinking this may mark the moment we can look back on and say, yep, that's when he truly jumped the shark?... Nope. http://www.prince.org/msg/7/190117

I've just watched the performance and I was not impressed at all.
I thought it was a bad vocal delivery, the tune was all over the place, and by insisting on cramming two songs into 4 odd minutes stole the power out of either. And why he didn't do the new single is very odd. The whole thing looked tired. Prince doing old Morris Day moves badly. .

Well, I didn't have a problem with Prince going on American Idol. The man's a walking contradiction so it's not worth pointing out the lapses in his artistic integrity and his flawed thinking anymore. I was glad to see him on TV, as ever, and I'd be happy for him if this helps him shift a few units. I don't, however, think it was a particularly good performance (to end with Satisfied is a downer), and I don't think it was a good effort at appealing to new fans (if indeed that was one of or in fact his sole purpose).
But it was alright. Good to see him anywhere really. Imagine if he'd just played the one song and it'd been 'Fury' as on SNL with that performance never having happened. Not THAT would've been something.

Of course I have my VCR cued up and shit, but honestly this show is so fucking LAME that I hope he does not do it... I'm not convinced it will boost sales of 3121 that much. None of the artists that have been on have recent albums except Mary J., right? And none of them are getting to plug any albums. And they are all singing old songs so it will just further cement "Prince = Purple Rain" I disagree. We had an "Idol" party last night and everyone of my girlfriends are going out to pick up the new album now. They had no idea what Prince sounded like post Purple Rain and always made fun of me for being a fan. AND I just got to work and my boss was estatic about seeing Prince last night and also will be buying the album. So it worked. [Edited 5/25/06 6:22am]

I think the whole thing boils down to thing: EXPOSURE! If I was a musician, and had a chance to go in front of the biggest TV audience of the year, I would be there in a heartbeat. Kudos for Prince for doing it, and, ON HIS OWN TERMS.
Prince- "I will do it, with these stipulations: 1. I come on right before the announcement of the winner. 2. Ryan must say, "OK, it's time to announce the winner." Once evenone in the world is watching, drop the house lights! 3. I sing 2 new songs. No PR or LGC. 4. I do not talk to any Idols or Ryan. I sing and leave." There are few performers who have that kind of clout. To have the most coveted TV time all year? Come on...it's a win-win. He is calling his own shots in his career now. I don't believe this is turning on what he has fought for. It's good to show the young performers what to fight for when you have a career. Never become a slave.

The performance was ok, but the man knows how to work it doesn't he? 200 million viewers worldwide were expected to tune in. Look at all the free publicity he got for a just few minutes of work. I give him credit for that and I also like how he didn't sing with anyone. He was the closing act and he certainly caught everyone's attention.
Mary, Dionne and Meatloaf were cool too, but Toni can't sing at all. She just mumbles her way through her songs.

Dude can go on the show when he wants AND perform right at the end before they read off the winner, when the viewers are in full.

AI history has proven it's a credibility destroying forum for the well-past-their-prime, over-the-hill, desperate for exposure, has-beens. Prince of 20, 10 or even 5 years ago would never have stooped to this level for a bit of exposure. Hell, if Prince of the '80's could meet the current incarnation he'd shake his head and sigh, happy only with the fact that he still has hair. Something else that I just thought of.
It would have been cool if he played guitar, but Prince as always been so much more than a frontman for a band, who also plays guitar well and a lot of other instruments. Prince has always done the pop-performance thing, too. Basically, with last nights performance, he showed American Idol what the Idols really needed to be. He did a pop-style performance with a couple of dancers with more of a pop-vibe. There is not one of the American Idol winners past or present--not a one-- that will ever be an all-around entertainer like Prince. Really, he just blew EVERYONE away at their own game--in their own element. I thought it was fantastic... and maybe more of a statement about the music industry than it would appear. Sure he is gonna benefit from making that statement as many artists benefit from making theirs, but maybe Prince in his own way was sending a message NOT to be defined or limited by the industry or anyone else's expectations. Then again, maybe it was all about promotion. P.S. I also saw Clay Aiekin's performance, and I have to admit that guy has a great voice, but what's up with that dude's hair? Yeah, Prince's hair was interesting, but Clay's woooo?? [Edited 5/25/06 7:08am]

This is where I draw the line: Promotion - you can do whatever the hell you want to promote your album. You can show up in assless pants, fuck Paris Hilton (though that's getting a bit too played), or do American Idol. It's just promotion. Sometimes tacky--sometimes appropriate. Selling Out - to me selling out is when you change your art for the purpose of selling records only. 3121 is commercial friend enough, but not exactly a sellout. Also, selling out might entail going against some established Principles that you represent. For example, if the Sexy Pistols do the RRHOF, they've sold out. But if Aerosmith did that, it's just promotion. However, Aerosmith as been known to change their songs dramactically becuase they're hired producers want them to be more "hit worthy"--selling out. Likewise, Prince showing up on American Idol can be viewed as promotion--shipping more units of 3121. Or, selling out--rambling against the music industry, but then ultimate courting it. But I dont' think it's selling out in this case becuase Prince doesn't owe American Idol anything. He doesn't owe Universal anything. At the end of the performance and end of the day, he keeps his masters and millions, and calls the shots as he sees fit. self-serving, but not exactly "Selling out"

In a five minute time span, Prince made me contradict myself and showed us all once again that he is a walking contradiction.
In five minutes, he sold more albums for himself that all the marketing Universal could have ever done. We claim we want him to be a success and then we shit all over him when he gets out there for the world to see. There is no jumping the shark for Prince to me. There is no Vegas Lounge Act Prince for me. I've followed the guy and been a fan for almost thirty years and whatever he wants to do, I'll be there.
