Who Really Sold Out Prince or American Idol?

The idea that Prince sold out is funny to me. Could it be that American Idol used Prince to boost their ratings? Obviously they could have had anyone they wanted to perform on their final episode, but they wanted Prince.
Everyone of us Prince fans wants to think we are hip and cool because we are so devoted. People LOVE Prince, but most people dont seek out music. So it has to be brought to THEM. Thats what this is, Prince being brought to the masses. Which as any artist, musician or otherwise, you want your art to be seen or heard by as many people as possible.

AI didnt need Prince, and Prince probably didnt need them. He's gotten by without promotion before. But really, is it a bad thing that he was seen by 90 million people? In the long run rent we the ones to benefit from this? In this day and age so many artists fade out of the spotlight and end up in oblivion. Prince has gone strong for almost 30 years? Showing up when he wants, how he wants.

Maybe we R the ones he was talking about in that bible quote. Don't we IDOLIZE him?

in the scheme of life, Prince appearing on AI won't mean chit. he was on american bandstand. he was on solid gold for christ's sake...it was an opportunity for him to publisize his music, and for his fans to see him. Is he wrong for appearing on Good Morning America next month?...is that more legit then american idol?..

just sayin

I feel like today might be the end of the world, what with Prince on American Idol and all lol A big part of me screams sell out and another part sees this as a great strategic move because in last nights appearance he got exposed to as many or more people that voted for a single party in the last presidential elections. Not many ways you can get that much exposure. Wonder if there is going to be a Prince night on future AIs smile

Yep, I agree with you on this. Also, I do not believe Idol used Prince, I think it's the other way around. 200 million viewers around the world were expected to tune in. Now that's publicity!!!

Exactly what i have been saying. Prince has done so many shows, from OPRAH to the View, to the Friggin MUPPETS, and even TRL!!!! Now come on people, TRL, at least on AI the artists are frigging artists, Manilow, Stevie Wonder, Styx, Shakira, I mean really now think of how Bad that TRL appearance was back in 1999, in front of those 16 year olds who had no idea what he was talking about.
