article says Prince took American Idol's popularity to a "whole new level"

I thought it was OK, nothing to get excited about, but nothing to particularly bitch about either - it was American Idol after all.
A rather pedestrian performance, for a lowest common denominator show - Lolita and Satisfied, two tracks we haven't seen performed live on TV before, it's better than another run-through of truncated or comatose versions of Let's Go Crazy or Purple Rain.

[Edited 5/24/06 20:35pm] Exactly. And damn if he didn't just bend over backwards and pander to everything he once so credibly despised – all in a desperate marketing attempt to selvage an album that is DOA and to get his ass kissed by the media. It reeked of tackiness and was so 'vegas lounge singer'. Am I the only one thinking this may mark the moment we can look back on and say, yep, that's when he truly jumped the shark?... Can the last one out please turn off the light... Welcome to The Hef Years... . [Edited 5/25/06 2:13am]

Someone earlier in this thread said that the show was seen by 90 million viewers. Try one third of that. Overnight Nielsen ratings say that only 29.3 million saw watched "American Idol."
That's because 14.6 million Americans have a brain and watched something besides reality television. As for what "3121" is doing on Amazon, so what. Is that going to encourage Prince to go on tour this year? Is it going to encourage more $312 ticket prices? Let's face it, the performance was awful. Prince is a musician. Where was the guitar? The piano? Those of you that are so excited about this - give it a few days and then reflect. It was no R&R HOF performance. Hell, it wasn't even the 2004 Grammys. Then again, I'm thankful I didn't have to hear that new godawful chorus from "Let's Go Crazy" again. He should've performed "Fury." Or sang a duet with Mary J. Blige. Maybe "Sweet Thing" backing her on guitar or piano. What a wasted opportunity.

[Edited 5/24/06 20:35pm] All while Prince was doing that in the mid-1990s, he himself had Margie Cox (and some other artists) tied to a contract with Paisley Park/NPG Records and refused to let the leave. THe ONLY artist Prince cares about is himself, and not even about his artistic integrity: it's all about the presidents. Goddamn, he compalined about WB interfering with his work (which they barely did, certainly not on the level of almost every other artist they employ) -- and then he signed with Clive Davis, THE most "hands-on" record exec out there. First thing Clive does? Tells Prince he loves the new record, but he needs to record some other tracks to appeal to more markets. And what does Princey do? He bends over backwards and tells Clive "yessirreebob" and starts screwing up Rave (even though it wasn't a good album to begin with). Of course his lame ass was gonna sell out to AI, after all he needs to do something to prevent 3121 from becoming yet another flop in a long line of flops. And before anyone rakes up the "but Musicology sold x million" crap: that album had ZERO impact and even Prince has forgotten about it. So 30 million people without musical taste saw Prince on AI -- so what? It will eb gone and forgotten mere weeks from now. Wow, it's awesome to see Bart carries his hatred from the Rave days still along to every single post his highness is willing to grant us.

I keep telling you Bart just loves to hate on Prince.
Anything Prince says or does brings ol' Barty boy to the Prince forum. Set your watch by it. I've never known anyone to be pissed off for so long for having their fan site shut down. Do you think the others carried a grudge for this long? Or have they acted like big boys and girls and carried on with their lives?

I take back anything I said about 'AI'. I was wrong!!!

Holy smokes! Prince shows up on AI, and so does Bart on the Org. What an exciting night! For sure, Prince meant business and did good, otherwise BVH wouldn't have whored himself by appearing on the Prince forum to complain about Prince whoring himself on AI.
All in all, a resounding marketing coup for Prince.

The performance was great. And to say Prince should have played guitar, well yes, Prince is one hell of a guitar player, but that's not all he is. He's an all around performer and showman and he doesn't always need the crutch of a guitar to blow everyone else off the stage.
Admittedly, it isn't hard to blow everyone off the stage when they mostly suck, but this performance worked for this audience. When you go to the concert, that's when you get everything that Prince is. Prince looked like he was enjoying himself and me and my honey were enjoying the hell out of it.

Even though I am no fan of American Idolatory, Prince did an excellent job and I was presently surprised at how short, sweet and lovely this performance was. Very with the times, but crapping all over the other acts; not to mention the Twins and choice of songs helped his image with the Idol crowd.

That would have been cool, as would any number of other scenarios. But I guess they desperately wanted to keep his appearance secret, so that's why we ended up with such a simple performance. Bart might be an old sour puss, but what he says is usually factually sound, it's just the slant he puts on it that gets people's backs up.

I don't believe that's the real Bart. Evidence:
1. He didn't tell anyone to do a search to get the facts right (e.g. it's already been proven the twins can't sing - look at this thread. that's why there's a serach function! etc.) 2. He said about Rave: "even though it wasn't a good album to begin with" not "even though it was a god-aful mess to begin with", not "even though it would've made a 4-yr-old chimpanzee composer hide his head in shame to begin with". just "wasn't god". Nope, folks, this is an impostor! I want the real BVH back! (Mayb that wasn't the real Prince performing either...) "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

so which tracks did he do ? full tracks or medley ?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He did abbreviated versions of Lolita and satisfied.
This is probably of no interest to any (including me), but at least one of the contestants (I think), quotes Prince as their idol: http://www.americanidol.c...ace_young/ I have no idea who any of these ppl are. Who's Clay Aiken, for example? I used to be a big Live fan - their first album was amazing. They were only 18. What's happened? "We've never been able to pull off a funk number"

So 30 million people without musical taste saw Prince on AI -- so what? It will eb gone and forgotten mere weeks from now. Just like EVERYTHING Prince has done in the past decade or so. Hey, at least Prince isn't hanging himself on a disco-ball type cross as a deliberate attempt to create some controversy and generate some buzz about a tour like some of his contemporaries. He isn't setting himself up to make political or social commentary as a way to promote himself and his music--indirectly increasing sales of his newest cd. Prince isn't trying to be anything more than he is: an amazingly gifted music artist and performer. Consequently, he decides to perform on a top-rated MUSIC show. So what's the big deal? How is that different than performing on the MTV movie awards back in the day? For him,it's all about the MUSIC. As a matter of fact, I think I remember seeing clips of him performing on American Bandstand very early in his career. So how is performing on American Idol really any different? So lighten up. Maybe at this point in his life, Prince isn't taking himself quite as seriously as he did a few years ago. Actually, maybe he has just gone back to the way he was in the beginning of his career.
