Controversy revisited

I just recently purchased prince's 1981 controversy cd because
it was one of his best albums that i could not afford to buy
when i was in high school. That album is classic. The title track,
do me baby, private joy, let's work, annie christian, and jack u off
were classic man. I would probably rate it as my 2nd favorite prince
album behind 1999. Tell me where some of you guys would rate controversy.
Don't laugh at my funk

One of my favourites too, I just don't get it when you have 80's music channels or 80's music played on the radio, and songs from this album and dirty mind, just don't get played? Hmmmm

It's a wonderful, wonderful album. It's quirky, funky, and flawed in a charming way.

It's my 7th favorite Prince album.

Controversy contains some great tracks, but I've always thought the sequencing
was a bit off. It just doesn't quite flow as an album as well as it should.

Where do I start, Everyone needs controversy in their life. Controversy, Do Me baby and Lets work are in my Top 10 songs. Its the best mix of preaching mixed in with the pornography. It was written at his best time, where he was two steps ahead of everyone else and each album was an improvement on the last. He was on the ascendant alright.
The music is quirky, confrontational, the lyrics as graphic as ever and the falsetto completely made it narcissistic. Just sheer bliss really. Its a shame we will never get any Controversy type records again.

Whilst not at the top of my favourites list, I think Controversy is the most important step change in Prince's whole career.

It was from this album onwards that he truely defined his own sound. What did controvery give us that the previous material didn't?

Production - Princes whole production style changed. the first three albums were all tinny in comparision. They sounded from the 70's. Prince learned to lay off the treble and echo and modernised his whole production.

The voice - The deep voice arrived, and prince sounded a lot broader as an artist. Like it or not, the falsetto was an aquired taste. The new voice gave him much broader appeal.

The Linn - Princes signiture of the 80s first appeared.

The room - Three tracks on one side!? Prince began breaking the mold and realised that he could commit his long jams to vinyl.

The lyrics - So far, we had sex love sex love. This album showed the man growing up. It was the for-runner for what we would get on 1999 and Sign o the times.

Direction - Prince seemed to finally choose a direction in sound. He used The Time as a separate outlet.

Whilst Dirty Mind and 1999 grab the headlines, it was Controversy the saw the biggest shift in Prince's whole career, and the one that would lead to his world domination of the mid 80's.

"Private Joy" is the highlight headbang

I still can't believe Warners didn't release it as a single

I remember hearing Conroversy for the first time. I found it a little "slick" and even though I liked the song "Controversy" It sounded alot like "Dirty Mind" to me with the pulsating bass line.

"Do Me Baby" "Let's Work" and "Controversy" have stood the test of time, but there's really alot of filler on this cd (Ronnie, Annie, Jack u Off) and there's not many songs for a Prince cd, its more like a side project. I guess that's why "1999" was a double record, because he must have had alot of songs written and saved.

I never understood why this album was dismissed by the critics so quickly.

Contreversy was to Prince what "Twitch" was to Ministry, or "Jagged Little Pill" was to Alanis Morrisette. It was bridge from Prince's old style into a broader more confident universe.

"Let's Work" can be heard in all sorts of modern day Prince songs from "We March" to "Raspberry Berret". "Ronnie Talk 2 Russia", though not a great song, sounds like the template to many many modern Prince rock songs. "Do Me Baby" more than any previous ballad is the launching point for some of his more recent ballads.

And Contreversy is an album that differs from alot of his newer output only by virtue of the fact that it is a fun album to listen to, not a tedius chore like TRC ill

the only problem i've had with it is the way ol' boy attempted to spit out his views on social affairs and what-not. it was more or less the very first example of how he kinda has the ability to spoot forth something profound in regards to the ills of the world but when he opens his mouth, mental potato salad falls out. it's as if the stuff prolly sounded better within his own head, i suppose...lol all that aside, it's an okay album.

the 25th anniversary of this album is coming up in october! (no, i won't be doing a special thing for it like i did with dm last year, but it'd be cool for someone else to perhaps take it to task...) horns

Squirrrel meat I totally hear u, u were saying what I couldnt there, its his first GROWN UP record, professionally recorded and the introduction of statements like Sexuality and Annie Christian next to the raunch, which actually sounds more like a horny man rather than the oversexed teenager on Dirty Mind.

Handclaps I would like to do the controversy thing if its for offer, to me analysing and sermonizing Controversy is like a sacred duty. Its not his best best, but definitely the Holy Grail of Prince albums.
