Excellent topic man smile

I remember those days well...
I use to have a HUGE crush on one of the girls in the group "The Flirts" and EACH AND EVERY time "Don't Put Another Dime In The Jukebox" would come on MTV or Channel 69's video show, I'd be rushing for the portable tape recorder. Come in half way through the song, but I didn't care. smile

I'd sit there ALL DAY with that dang tape recorder thing armed and ready in case "I Wanna Be Your Lover" came on. smile

So, I have a tape FULL of half a*sed recordings of "Don't Put Another Dime In The Jukebox" and another I used to break dance in my driveway with that had "When Doves Cry" followed by "Beat Street".

Over... And Over... And Over... Again smile

Thanks for bringing this up. smile

One more embarassing thing..I taped (and still have) the radio commercial spots for PR movie and album ("it is more than an album, it is more than a movie, it's Prince and The Revolution)

eek

I digress...

Having a bloody plane go by when song I'm trying to tape is on just pissed me off to no friggin' END!evil

Dogs barking, cars going by, someone running water running, some simpleton knocking on my door, someone in the house calling me - all this stuff just got in the way of trying to record off the radio. I even recorded off the tv sometimes (pre-VCR's), and it wasn't always music. Won't be telling ya what I recorded.

i used to hate it when the stupid DJ would start talking long before the song ended. right over the end! i'd try and turn down the treble to minimize the voice but it was still there on the tape

I had a friend that used to tape Fred AStaire movies off the TV & listen to them later. Listen to a tape of people dancing.

This is embarrassing but oh well..I used to tape off the radio too. But I would also ask a question..push pause..and have a lyric to th e song answer the question. Like when I asked a question "Mike, how are you gonna get that box down the stairs" I would click pause and wait till a recent song of the time such as "Push..push..push it in the groove" came on and Id tape that as the answer...sort of like my homemade Mr Jaws tape.

Prince appeared on 'Solid Gold' at least twice. In 1983,he performed '1999' and 'Little Red Corvette' on two seperate appearances.I also recall seeing Vanity 6 on there singing "Nasty Girl".I'm pretty sure The Time appeared on the show in 1981,performing "Cool".

Do you remember the host Marilyn McCoo? She was HOT! I had a major crush on her back then;)

sojourner

a great topic and memory for me too:smile:.
For me the invention of the taperecorder came when i was around 10 years old. I used to make rapmusic before i even heard about it .I did that with an old youthfriend around 1980. We called ourself tik tak and made our own music through beatboxing.Did we know? With another friend we used to make selfmade radioprograms with the taperecorder. That were funny times. We learned ourselves quite some English. We spoke it in English with a dictionary on the lap.
I got a gettoblaster (without the lights) and then started to record music from the radio. In our citytown we had some great radiopirates with US imports. I got quite handy with the taperecorder's buttons ,fingerfast.
I remember that i sat in front of the tv to record beatstreet and breakdance (1) the movies. My parents were so good to leave the livingroom and be quiet. Just think about the musicquality we went through to have that music.

I stole the tvnight of my father when i wanted to use his video and his fine tuner when i wanted to record the integral broadcasting of the lovesexy concert in Dortmund Germany 88. What a great and proud moment that was to see Prince peak infront of us ,i could see my father didn't care anymore to have to see my music:smile:.

Still until this moment i sometimes record on tape. I do that for in the car and on my walkman. Also do i still play my old tapes ,however some are a bit embarrassing to hear. I think some of my most beautiful and precious material is on tape. I've got it all ,even switched somewhat to MD ,but i'll stay true to my beloved taping system. Sometimes people see my walkman and laugh somewhat saying something like 'does it still exists?' ,mentioning the tape ofcourse. They don't mean this bad and i know it is not such a subject ,but i find this really stupid. So be aware yourselves!smile

Yeah I remember LIL MAN two appearances on SOLID GOLD. The way they were screaming for him during the "1999" performance was wild{and it was only a lip-synched performance}. When I saw this performance, I knew THEN he had FINALLY arrived at pop superstardom.

I remember Marilyn McCoo very well. I also remember her song with Billy Davis "You Don't Have To Be A Star". A quick sidenote...Dionne Warwick used to butcher other people's song on Solid Gold. There's something disturbing about her singing "Little Red Corvette". rolleyes

I remember my first portable tape player. My uncle bought it for me one christmas and I was sooo happy to have it. I unboxed it and guess what? NO BATTERIES and mine didn't come with an adapter.

Since we were living in a hick town, none of the store were open on Xmas day so I had to wait a whole day before i could actually use it. But I did request an adapter so batteries wouldn't be needed.

Of course my mother issued the directive to NOT TAKE IT TO SCHOOL which I did and of course I was caught.

Those were the days.

Thanks for the memories.
