Back In Tha Day Memories....Portable Tape Recorders

Now it's time to really go back. I know we got some orgers here who back in the day(when you were growing up and wasn't buying records) used to get you a blank tape {or a tape with something on it already}and a portable tape recorder. Then when a song comes on the radio that you like you run to the radio and put the tape recorder up to the radio and record the song. During this time...you'd be praying that nobody would walk by the room talking excessively loud {or talking at all as the recorder may pick up their voice}.

I always had a hard time taping certain artists songs on the radio, {like Prince and Michael Jackson} because every time their songs would come on the radio, my sisters ,who happen to be in the house, would start screaming like crazy. I have vivid memories of how LIL MAN's songs like "Uptown" and "Dirty Mind" on the radio throwing my sisters in a frenzy. I'd be so pissed at them for messing up my tape. I'd used to tell them to "just shut up" when the songs would come on and I would TRY to record.

A joyous occasion, it would be, when I was at home by myself. Because I know I could record my music in piece.

...The things a true music lover have to go through sometimes. I was so happy when I got my first tape deck. I know this brings back memories for some of the orgers here.

...Dayum!!! That shit is too funny!!

Although, I used to record mine from the T.V. (On Friday and Saturday nights, I used to record songs from the old "Night Tracks" video show on TBS out of Atlanta). Old jams like "Atomic Dog" and such...smile

Isn't it great how technology has advanced??? Now I can do the same shit, but with CD!!! smile

U guys don't laugh at me cuz till this day a 19 yrs old sistah DON'T KNOW how 2 record from a TV redface.

But yes there were times when I ran to the reocrder tape and record DUH rolleyes lol ol' school joints from Mariah, Whitney, Anita, Sade and all these artists. But I didn't have to shout at my brotha/sistah to tell them to shut up cuz the recorder won't catch their voices.

Hey as always GREAT TOPIC!

Man, that does bring back some memories. I remember my little AM/FM Stereo Cassette player/recorder...I got it 4 Christmas!

I used 2 listen 2 the radio waitin' 4 them 2 jam my favorite song, or calling and requesting my favorite song, so that I could record it. Then the DJ would introduce the song over the intro of the song...and then stop just b4 the vocals came it!!! That used 2 drive me nuts!

But I still recorded the song...played it, and played it again!

Thanx 4 the good thread, Brother915!

Geriatric here, and how I remember...

How many times did you try to calculate the minutes of the song, and the minutes of the tape..

Only to cut half the song off.

ROLF lol

Thats another memory! At one point I'm sure I was an expert at just looking at the amount of tape left and working out how many minutes I had left on it.

I had a roommate in the early 70's who was really into Loggins & Messina. So Loggins & Messina come to town to do a radio show & preview their new album. My roomate hooks up his tape recorder to my clock/radio so he can tape the whole radio show. Its starts at 11 o'clock Sunday night and since its hooked up to my clock radio I got to listen to it until its over before I can go to sleep. Around 1 AM I am groogy & think don't forget to set the alarm for tomorrow morning which I proceed to do forgetting the show is being taped. I said I was groggy. In the middle of one of Loggins & Messina's brand new songs I turned the radio off. Needless to say my roomate went nutso on me until I turned it back on. Ooops!

There are a few songs I listened to sooo many times from one recording off the radio that every time I hear them now, I still remember the words the announcer said before the vocals kicked in. Madonna's "Get Into the Groove" is one of them.

Yeah lol I used to do that too. I rigged the tape recorder somehow, so that it only recorded the song, the background noise couldn't be heard. I got some kind of strereo plug from Radio Shack.

This is embarrassing but oh well..I used to tape off the radio too. But I would also ask a question..push pause..and have a lyric to th e song answer the question. Like when I asked a question "Mike, how are you gonna get that box down the stairs" I would click pause and wait till a recent song of the time such as "Push..push..push it in the groove" came on and Id tape that as the answer...sort of like my homemade Mr Jaws tape.

Speaking of portable recorders...I used to lock myself in my cousins closet (no pun intended) and listen to 1999 over and over and over. I was 12. That closet was the only place I could have the privacy that I needed to relish in the splendorous funk smile

One more embarassing thing..I taped (and still have) the radio commercial spots for PR movie and album ("it is more than an album, it is more than a movie, it's Prince and The Revolution) and Kasey Casem stating WDC is no.1 with a booed at The Stones concert story .

Oh my God this is too funny...I used to wait with my little tape player and radio for hours for one of my favorite songs to come out...I remember I was 9 or so and I wanted to record the song "Xanadu" so badly that I wasted an entire Saturday...song never did come on...I know, I know, Xanadu? I should of known I was going to be a homo with that little Saturday ordeal...
