I think a lot of people like it because Prince had so much "trouble" releasing it. They feel like they're in some way supporting Prince in his "battles" with the label to like this album.

I've never understood why people liked it so much.

He's not unlike most artists though. They hit a peak of creativity and then everything kind of falls off after that. Maybe it's because they get insulated from the outside world and therefore don't have influences to challenge or inspire them? Not sure. But if you think about it, there aren't many artists whose later work is better than their earlier work. I guess I keep hoping that Prince will be different, that he'll release something of musical significance again, but it's been almost 20 years since he has and I find myself being less and less interested in what he has to say.

I feel you. The enthusiasm for Gold mystifies me. Outside the hardcore, there's not a whole lot of appreciation for it, so maybe Prince captured some energy unique to his diehards. I don't know, it's a wordy album with disjointed ideas, and an odd sense of agitation and righteousness running through the music. People around here praise it for its energy, but I just hear frustration.[Edited 5/22/06 18:14pm]

Outside of a few brave critics and hardcore Prince fans, there's not a lot of appreciation for Parade by the outside public...So what's your point?

It's got sic flow and energy, and reaches across so many styles. I even like the NPG Operator segques, coz it feels like a guided tour. Whenever I play it around peeps and they're like "yo, what's up with this weird album?" I say stick to JoJo, bitch, this party is off-limits 2 u. The only songs I have 2 skip r "Now" and "Billy Jack Bitch", the rest are pure X-tasy. He tweren't kidding when he called it Gold, coz it's a damn mine.

If somebody ever asked me how I felt about the Gold Experience, I would say I fucking love this album. Then I'd jump on the couch and pump a fist in the air. That's how I feel about it.
music I'm afraid of Americans. I'm afraid of the world. music

Before you jump all over me, I like this album just fine.

It's so often hailed as a classic around here--the one 90's album worthy of his catalog. But the individual songs get bashed pretty often.

P Control is pathetic posing and bad rap

Endorphinmachine was ruined in production

We March is plastic & cheesy

Beautiful is boring & cheesy

Dolphin is just plain lame

Eye Hate U is typical dull Prince balladry with questionable lyrics

Gold is pandering pop, with none of the soul of Purple Rain (which it's clearly an answer to).

This leaves SHHH, Now, 319, Billy Jack Bitch, & Shy as pretty well liked in general. Five songs that don't get much criticism, but are they classics?

Am I misreading people's comments, or is Gold overrated?

[b]Look Mommy! I too can display my prejudice and subjectivity without really saying anything other than "I don't like it".

What's so great about Purple Rain?

Let's go crazy---stupid sermon intro and cheesy 80's guitar
Take me with U---- Gushy and corny Apollonia is a horrible singer.
Beautiful Ones-- Sappy, Boring, and screechy.
Computer Blue----Just plain Lame
Darling Nikki-----Derivative Prince being dirty and, again, boring.
When Doves Cry-----Cheesy keyboards and stupid lack of bass
I would die 4 U--typically inane Prince religious posturing
Baby, I'm a star---corny show choir American Idol crap--pandering to the crowd
Purple Rain-----again, corny, and pandering to the unintellectual country/pop crowd. Middle america will LOVE this, but it's below Prince.

You see? It's easy to stupidly critique without any real substance. You can do it for any type of art. Please, if you want to discuss the merit of the album, raise the level a little bit. Anyone can trash something and day "it sucks". Be specific and I'll do likewise in telling you why The Gold Experience is classic Prince.

I'm here to tell you, I'm at that road. And I would rather walk it with you than walk it alone".

exactly the opposite, actually. when it came out, it was the only one i could get my friends to sit through. they loved P Control, Endorphinmachine, Shhh, 319, and Billy Jack Bitch. everyone and their brother knows Pussy Control, even though it wasn't a hit by any stretch of the imagination.

and 6 years later, it's the only Prince album i ever heard blasting out of people's dorms (3 times in the span of 3 years, in different dorms).

so i don't know what you're talking aboutl.
