1984 - 12 years old. Played the Purple Rain album to death
on my old beaten up stereo and the tape maxi-single of 1999 with 17 days on it. nearly 20 years on and I still get the same feeling when a new album or song comes out.

Believe it or not...I was a fan of Sheila E at first (though I liked Purple Rain and 1999 I wasn't very fond of the purple one himself).
Then I bought Sign 'O' The Times (my first Prince album) since Sheila E was on it, and began to respect him as a musician. Then in 1989 I went to see the LOVESEXY concert at Nassau Colisseum (I was 18+) AND I WAS HOOKED!!! Been a huge fan ever since. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

My mother said I used to clap and dance to "When U Were Mine" and "I Wanna Be Your Lover", when I was two. Don't know if that made me a fan, she said I was always pleasant when she played Prince. She would put me to sleep to "When We're Dancing Close and Slow"
So I guess you can say since 1982...I was 2 years old Blue Cash Dont play me Blue

I remember 'Purple Rain', although I was about 6 years old, and the 'popular hits' like 'Raspberry beret', 'Kiss', the 'Batman' song, 'Little Red Corvette, 'I wanna be your lover' (?) 'The most beautiful girl in the world', and 'Diamonds and Pearls'.
It wasn't until about 3 years and some months ago that I started really looking into his music and I woke up---BIG TIME!!! I didn't know even know he had so many songs, and I fell in love with his music ever since. I think it was somewhere around 1999, that I then realized he was my favorite artist, and that he was (and is) THE ARTIST. [This message was edited Thu Jul 25 18:20:41 PDT 2002 by Starmist7]

I first became a Prince fan in '91. I got a hold to the 1979 album "Prince" but I could never get past the first song("I wanna be your lover"). I listened to that song for about six months straight without even trying to listen to the rest of the record. I always knew about Prince, but I never really payed a lot of attention to him before discovering that record. In '91 I was thirteen and I had just discovered girls and sex around the time "Gett off" came out in summer '91. I thought the song was nasty and daring..which was something I greatly appreciated given the circumstances. Needless to say that song coupled with my experiences branded me a Prince fan for life!

well, maybe if it was the hotel lobby bathroom. Interesting angle. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

calm down vagina... (theres a phrase I never thought I'd hear myself say)... a question like this requires a little thought. I mean, the first Prince item I bought was the Purple Rain album in '84, but I bought lots of other albums in '84 as well by artists I didnt become fans of.. so considering this I'd have to say '86 with the Parade album... thats when I was really hooked.

It's amusing how many people say they became fans in 1982 because of the 1999 album. For those few who actually did buy the 1999 album in 1982 (during the months of November & December), they were already fans. The rest of us didn't know about the album until 1983 when it started getting airplay. I became a fan in 1983 when I was 13 and I'm sticking to my story. Peace.

1986 at the age of 4. I heard Purple Rain/Kiss/1999 as a triple play on the radio, and from what Mom says, my ear has been glued to the speaker ever since!! I'm back!!!!!!!

1981.
My mom had already purchased previous albums for Soft and Wet and Do Me Baby. By the time she bought 1999, we were both into the music. I just kinda kept buying the albums and listening to the tunes until 88 when I got a copy of Lovesexy and the Black Album. The Black Album got me hooked on looking up non-released tunes. Then I bought this live show CD set not too long before Batman came out called "Small Club." I was floored. I then started buying Goldmine mags, and getting the college used CD place to get in Prince boots. Soon I had more boots than releases. I already had all the US domestic 12" singles and a bunch of 7" singles. I thought I knew a lot about Prince, then I found this fanzine called Uptown. Another jaw dropping experience. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
