1985, the Raspberry Beret song turned me on. I was like, what is this fonkiness?

I was in 5th grade at the time and had recently gotten heavy into music, wham! being my favorite.

So I bought the 45 and wore that thing out. I also thought She's Always in My Hair was good.

I remember hunting down the record (anyone agree that as a youngster finding records is a huge project?) and finally finding it in K-mart and thought, oh my god, this album art is da bomb (that phrase wasn't around then, though).
I couldn't buy the record cuz it was like 8.99 or something crazy expensive like that. my allowance was like 2.50 a week.

My high school sister at the time's friend had this record called 'Purple Rain' that I thought was okay I guess (5th grader) and I knew When Doves Cry and Let's Go and all. At the time, I guess the font for the words on the cover for 'prince and the revolution purple rain' was too cutting. I liked the bubble van gogh of 80 days.

But as a 10 year old, it was Raspberry Beret, that funky chorus, and going in through the out door out door that woke me up to the magic.

And this whole world became magical when I saw the video.
