Top 5 Act Originating from Minnesota

Ranked in my order of personal preference (1being the best) *Note- I do not live in Minnesota, nor the US for that matter, so I am hardly aware of all the riches this fertile musical area has produced. But heres my list of top favorites:

1.Prince
2.Bob Dylan
3.The Replacements-Paul Westerberg
4.Husker Du-Sugar-Bob Mould
5.The Time

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis called in and told someone to slap you and ask you if you know anything about producing enormously successful pop music.

I put Prince above Dylan as being signifigant for Minnesota, just because Prince stayed here and is always paying more homage to his hometown than Dylan ever did.

Sorry, but they weren't even a part of The Time when The Time was most relevant. And I don't consider them solely from The Time. They made a name for themselves on their own.

Most relevant, and most popular are two different things. When you return your funk pass, you will also be receiving a copy of a purple book entitled: The History of Minneapolis Music.

I had no idea Yanni was from Minnesota. I am so darn unhip.

Forgot about Soul Asylum, but I don't feel they would supplant any in my top 5 list.

About Bob Mould, I researched and found he was originally from New York, but was a resident of the twin cities, as were the other 2 members of Husker Du, so I think this is correctly considered a Minnesotan band.

So! You're going to consider Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis forever members of The Time and everything they've done on their own (95% of their careers) as just extensions of The Time?

YOU need YOUR funk pass revised.

They are forever members of The Time--they come back whenever they want. They did it in 1990 (this was after they had gained massive success as producers) and, hopefully, someday they'll do it again. Even now they are still somewhat torch bearers of "The MPLS sound". It is not accurate to exclude their tenure in The Time as part of the reason for their success. In the linear notes for her greatest hits-Janet Jackson states that she went to Jam and Lewis because of The Time and the attitude and sound they had.

So your sarcastic remark of- "Yeah, because the Time went somewhere" really doesn't hold a lot of water. Furthermore, The Time are easily one of the more successful acts to come out of MPLS--that's a given. Maybe Jay and Silent Bob need to pay you a visit.

YOU need YOUR funk pass revised.

The way you use this as a retort to someone leads me to think that you don't understand what this means. You are the one dismissing the importance of The Time, Minneapolis sound, and , in general, all that is good and funky.

Again, I consider The Time a Prince project. He performed all of the music and a lot of the vocals to all of their records with the exception of Pandemonium.

Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are successful in their own right. They were members of the time, officially, for a total of... What, 3 years?

The Time might be one of the more successful groups out of Minnesota, but Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis deserve *their own spot*, not one that is lumped in with The Time (whose other members were not nearly as successful on their own).

gotta remember they were doing the damn thang waaaaay before any of prince's pet projects came to fruition too. can't just lump them in with the time only, nor can you have 'em standing strictly on their own, because that's just not so. everything's connected and around for a reason, whether you wanna acknowledge that or not.

still waiting on that funk pass and key, guy.

Yeah, I *know* they were around before Prince's projects came around. But isn't that *why they* deserve their own spot?

you lost yer "true funk soldier" rank when you made your addition to this thread. any "true funk soldier" (gahh, i've always found that term to be cheesy...) worth their weight in famborraccas would know that jam & lewis shouldn't be stricken from the time and set on their own, regardless of their length of time with the group. they were just as hot with 'em as they are on their own.

I don't agree! I give kudos to Jam and Lewis based on their own successes, based on the empire they built from scratch. Not because they rode on Prince's coattails.
