I really dig Graham with Sly but I feel his style somehow doesn't fit in with Prince's music. A different vibe or something. Just like the Meters with the JB horns. A dream come true on paper, but disappointing on record. (imho)

My sentiments exactly.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I've never known him to be given the title the greatest bass player in the world.

Jaco Pastorius, on the other hand, gave it to himself.

And I seconded it!!!

John Francis Pastorius WAS the greatest bass player EVER!

I live in South Florida where Jaco lived.
I've met his son and wife a few times. Very nice people.

I've talked with many of the local music store owners that have been here a while and they have loads of Jaco stories.

The funniest is from Peaches (record store). They say Jaco used to come in the store and take his albums like they really belonged to him and hand them out to customers saying: Hi! I'm Jaco Pastorius, the Greatest Bass player in the world! Here. Have my album.

The store owners had a hard time with him all the time. He'd also come in and just take his records and walk out the door like he didn't have to pay for them.

One other time Jaco comes in the local "Ace Music" (before Mars bought out all Ace stores) and begins to practice to himself.

The store owner had an appointment with a local church pastor for some sound equipment and saw him walking to the front door of the store.

The store owner tells Jaco: "Now Mr. Pastorious, please behave youself, there is a good customer of mine coming in and he's a preacher." Jaco replied: "I'll be cool."

In walked the preacher and Jaco screams out "I'm the greatest bass player in the world!"

Without missing a beat, the preacher responded: "And you must be Jaco Pastorius!"

Jaco quickly got quiet and just hung his head and mingled through the store. They talked for a little while but the store owner didn't know what was said between them.

(The preacher told the store owner later that he knew who Jaco was and wanted to do that for a long time as well as tell him about the Lord.)

I hear from a lot of people down here that Jaco was quite the character.

Amusing stories..thanks for sharing Yamomma

People talk about his skills as a bassist, but his compositional talents is somewhat overlooked . Stuff like "Kuru/Speak Like A Child" and "3 Views Of A Secret" is just pure beauty.

Larry didn't CREATE nothing! Man, folks have been playing bass, sax, guitar, FLUTE efor christ sake rhythmically for MANY MANY MANYYY years!

All Larry did was boast and brag about it to make folks THINK he was the originator.

God man, go listen to ANY Jazz artist from before Larry's time...

F*ck man, listen to Emmit Otter's Juggband or something from the backwoods of Arkansas and you'll find the same sh*t and WAY before Larry Grahams time!

Antony7,The reason why Larry's workshop was full was because the crowd thought that Prince might show up.
That was the reason I wasted my time on it, and I know several other people that went for the same reason.

I wanted to leave after a few minutes but was forced to stay there because it was so full.

He might be a good bass player, but what about the other things you have to endure watching Larry?

Prince has let go several good people but hangs on to Larry maybe because of the JW thing. If the truth was known he is probably using Prince.

Speaking of which, who worte James Brown's bass lines??? Call me bluff tho,,,!

Bootsy was a bad man...

You mean BOOTSY COLLINS?? eek

Ahhh... the name is Bootsy, baby!

He is STILL a bad MF to this day. Bootsy is great.

yeah, bootsy was (and still is) a very bad muthafucka, but he wrote very, very few of james brown's bass lines, considering that he only played with james for about a year (part of 1969 and part of 1970)... he did write some classic bass lines in that year, but really a very small portion considering all of the classics that mr. brown had before and after bootsy...

before bootsy collins, james brown's main bass player was bernard odum... he played on both the apollo and apollo II albums, and played on most of james brown's studio recordings (the only exceptions being when james would play with studio musicians) until 1969...

after bootsy, james' main bass player was fred thomas... he was still playing with the godfather as late as "live at the apollo: 1995"...

In all honesty, I have Larry's Graham Central Station and Rhonda Smith's album. I feel Rhonda a hell of a lot more. Though, Larry has Prince influence all over it, Rhonda works her own groove.

DITTO hilton02 Larry aint that funky he was Under slys direction he keot his place so he didnt sound corny. And Larrys album is a bunch of prince samples with larry singing in his old man voice tryin to be funky but he aint, AND is it true that Rhonda AND Prince credit him with there whole influence on how they play??? Ive been hearing this from orgers but I can hardly believe it. Larry get respect just as in the entire group of Sly and the Family-- but on his own??I dont care if he is older than prince, Prince is better than him any day, its nice prince is being nice to him. I havent heard Rhondas album but Im sure what you say is true if it isnt a bunch of prince samples and just her music./ Thats what larry needed to do is stick with his own.
