do you mean as far as the general public or just the fan base when it comes to albums being overrated or underrated?

IMHO, The Gold Experience is UNDERRATED.that album has "studio fire".

For me, most specifically, Dirty Mind is his weakest, flattest, most overrated uninspired effort to date. On those rare occasions when I actually attempt to listen to it, I thank GOD for Newpower Soul...or just about any other Prince album for that matter...including Kamasutra!!!

Most Underrated Albums:

1) . This is a flawed masterpiece. But all of Prince's great albums except Purple Rain are flawed masterpieces.
2) Emancipation. Not the album Prince was born to make, but I like about 30 of the 36 songs on the 3 hour opus. That's one hell of an achievment.
3) Around The World In A Day - Although his cross over appeal became apperent in albums like 1999 and Purple Rain, this is the one that really showed that Prince was willing to paint with an enormous palette.

I would normally say The Gold Experience,but considering I've not read any "bad" reviews of it, I didn't list it.


Most Overrated Albums (here's where the true blasphemy begins)
1) Dirty Mind - The title track is repititious to the point of boring me to tears, the falsetta isn't all that impressive, and with the exception of "Head", "Sister" and "When U Were Mine", the songs are generic and sound too similar to each other. I do like the garage band spirit to it, but it's not enough to make the album all that interesting to me.
2) 1999 - Don't get me wrong. I really really like this album. "Little Red Corvette", "delirious", and "DMSR" are some of the funkiest songs in Prince's arsenal. And almost as good are "Lady Cab Driver", "A-U-T-omatic", and "Something in the Water". But I'm stunned by the praise this album gets in comparision to some of his other albums (see underrated list)
3) Sign of The Times - Often billed as his best album by fans, this confuses me. This is by far, consistently on my top 5 favorite Prince albums list. Of All his albums this one desperately needs to be remastered. To Me, SOTT is on par with Purple Rain, but PR beats it out--it's shorter and fiercer. It rocks more than SOTT, and it's single ballad "The Beautiful Ones" is more powerful than any of the ballads on SOTT. And it's anthem "Purple Rain" is better than "The Cross"--SOTT's anthem. Don't shoot me people, I still love the shit out of SOTT. I just think it's a bit overrated.
4) LoveSexy - another album I love, but is overrated. "I Know" is not an emotionally uplifting song, "Alphabet Street" is almost completely ruined by the rap (and I've never heard a live version of it I liked), Anne Stesia is very powerful but ends a bit campy with the whole "Love is god, god is love" bit, "When 2 R In Love" is a great ballad, but not all that emotionally moving, and "Positivity" sounds like the afterbirth of a b-side. Yet Prince had some genius in creating the album becuase the sum total of the album is far stronger than it's individual parts.

Overrated (in no particular order):
"1999" - Never seen the appeal in it at all. First heard the album in 1988 after being a fan for four years and it just left me cold. Overlong, repetitive, and really rather weak.
"Lovesexy" - Has some great songs, but also a lot of filler. Often overcrowded in the mix and just a mess.
"SOTT" - When it is good it is unsurpassed, but when it is bad it is filler. Whenever I listen to it I stop disk 1 after "Starfish and Coffee" and disk 2 after "ICNTTPOYM".
"Controversy" - The first time I heard it I loved it, but my mood quickly changed. The first three tracks are good, but the second side is dross.
"Symbol" - Again, loved it at the time but I tired of it VERY quickly. Too much Tony M, too much substandard R&B, too many tracks that start well but quickly fizzle out (such as "Love 2 the 9s" and "The Continental").
"3121" - Prince-lite. "Black Sweat" and "Fury" when played live promised so much, but the album is just bland.

Underrated (in no particular order):
"Parade" - The sound of summertime, gorgeous production, lush strings, fantastic songs, funky as hell, and the opening six tracks... sheesh.
"ATWIAD" - Everyone cried "it's not 'Purple Rain'!" at the time but this is underlines what I once loved about Prince - you never knew what he was going to do next, how he would sound, how he would look. At one time every album he did was different, the songs took weird turns and strange sounds popped up into the mix, and "ATWIAD" really showcases this. Took me a year to love it, but once I did I was smitten.
"The Gold Experience" - His last classic. Fantastic "live" sound to it and some stunning songs. Still some drivel, but the good outweighs the bad.
"Graffiti Bridge" - Remove the non-Prince tracks and you have some real classics in here. "Joy in Repetition", "Thieves...", "We Can Funk", "The Question of U" - need I say more? (And yes, I actually don't mind the title track).
"The Black Album" - Fantastic, pure "dark" Prince, full of odd moments and some awesome tracks. If you heard it back in '87-'88 or thereabouts it will have blown you away, as it did with me. On the other hand if you are hearing it now after all the hype you'll probably be a little disappointed.
