My take on overrated/underrated is party based on opinions I see expressed here:
Overrated: 1999 -- Great first 3 songs. Every song after is too long by half. Around the World in a Day -- alot of fans seem desperate to love this deeply flawed album. I see it all the time with other groups I like. It's like the red-headed stepchild that gets no love, so the hardcore fans rush over to give it some. But 3 great songs doesn't make a great album. Underrated: Batman--mixed rock guitar with dance beats. The Batman references prematurely aged it. He didn't really rock the guitar again until Gold Experience. Come--There is no Prince album like this one. Reason enough to like it. He tries on more styles than anything else he released in the 90s. This was the first Prince album with truly awful promotion and suffers in people's memories because of it. wtf edit [Edited 4/22/06 14:30pm] | |

I notice a lot of people are saying Lovesexy is overrated. Maybe but Live it was an amazing tour.

Underated, possibly the Gold Experiece, altho For You shows the fledgling genius in Disco mood ! Over rated Id say Diamonds and Pearls - the beginning of a decline in my opinion - Prince is at his creative best on the whole when he uses drum machines. | |

Somebody's getting a bit upset. I've listenned to Lovesexy hundreds, if not more, times in my life and I enjoy it alot. But I had to track the album after ripping it to mp3, so that I could skip parts I didn't like. To me, it's overrated. I can see why people get upset though. At my age, these albums dropped in Highschool, which is a period of time in which we take our musical heros very seriously, and music evokes still strong emotions in us. So there is some nastalgic emotion I wrap around his 80's output. But when listen to stuff objectively, I fail to see why an album like Dirty Mind leaves an album like "Chaos and Disorder" in the dust.  | |

I often skip the three first tracks, and listen to the others. And Around the World in a Day is not over- rated. It is very much under- rated I would say. All 9 tracks there are brilliant. It's my favourite Prince album. | |

parade the gold experience (+> (it's not the greatest, but there's far more good stuff on there that people don't apprecieate) over rated D& P (it's not bad, it's just not that good either.) and even though i love, love, love it; Purple Rain (it pains me to type it, but it's not his best, but people act like it is, so therefore it's over rated.) For me, most specifically, Dirty Mind is his weakest, flattest, most overrated uninspired effort to date. On those rare occasions when I actually attempt to listen to it, I thank GOD for Newpower Soul...or just about any other Prince album for that matter...including Kamasutra!!! U CAN'T BE SERIOUS!! We're all entitled to our opinions, such that they are like assholes (everyone having one and all), but I have to go the other way on this one....the whole NPS/psuedo-rapper thing just doesn't do it for me at all....it seems to me for the most part that this era is Prince trying to fit the mainstream....granted, his less than great (to me) is still 150% better than the shit that passes for music these days....but to call Dirty Mind flat and uninspired just doesn't work for me....sorry...sue me....but I can't get past the point that when this album came out, as a freshmen in high school I was able to sing "Head" to girls and not get the shit kicked out of me....so on that principle alone, its one of his greatest triumphs.... He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

I must be retarded because for the life of me I don't get the whole Dirty Mind/Chaos n Disorder analogy....Chaos and Disorder was my second Prince frisbee CD (after grafilthy bridge)....while DM gets replaced every 6 months just to keep it fresh....I guess I just fall in the aforementioned category of my faves coming out when I was a teen (pre-89 stuff)....and my loyalty being deeply based upon that material....I love his music, but this constant bad-mouthing of his best material in favor of his "look at me, I'm a rapper too" period is ludicrous.... and just for the record, his most underrated album is ....
most overrated is Chaos....second only to the bridge in garbage factor.... my opinion for those who are planning to flame me..... ain't nuthin' but a chkn  He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

Can't help but thinking some people are REALLY messin' with our minds here, like the starter of this topic 4 instance..... you must be joking, please say you do?!
Overrated... any album after '89 apart from Gold Experience and Rainbow Children. I (obviously) don't listen to song lyrics, rather buy a Bob Dylan album if I would.. MOST overrated 3121, I really tried but only found 1 decent tune, beeing the titletrack. The rest won't be remembered in 2 years time, it's actually not the first time the press' writing 'best work in years' ... same thing happened to 'Musicology', did I miss out on same albums since or was it really the album before '3121'??! |

I love how people are suggesting "The Gold Experience" is underrated. What planet are ya'll from where TGE doesn't get its deserved props here? Lawd.
Underrated: Hands down, The Vault. Overrated: Dirty fuckin' Mind. I'm so tired of people praising this album when the production is ganked, the songs (other than When U Were Mine, Gotta Broken Heart Again, and Partyup) sound half-assed with annoyingly nasal falsetto, and they have that screeching synth. | |
