It is still on regular spin here, 3121 shows sings of maturing and becoming another classic Prince album if u ask me, its a good one, and I am excited to see what the next album will sound like, lets hope we don't have 2 wait very long.

It is intentional that it's lacking funk furvor...not exactly sure why he did this.

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! He purposefully restrained himself on this album. There's no other explanation! Only Prince knows why....I'm sure you all know how easy it would've been to funk up Black Sweat! He didn't want to make this a hit. It's like he's testing us to see if we truly love him....

Thanks brotherluv , good to see someone has the right mindset and is not clouded.

Its not that he doesnt want a hit...funking up black sweat more WOULDNT have made it a hit ..it WOULDVE made it even LESS likely to be a hit for "radio".
He sacrificed its potential to make it a more accessible. I'm sure he's got way better shit to release , but he dont.

This cd is a fuck you to the bitch-and- moan fans and the industry. And since Im neither, I realize what it feels like.

Anyone who thinks Prince purposefully sabotaged any of the songs on 3121 is an absolute moron. He clearly put a lot of effort into this album, but he`s simply not a producer with a fresh sound.

BTW Black Sweat is supposed to sound the way it does. It`s a sparse funk jam; that`s the point.

I like the album. As it stands, on its own, it’s a good album with some pretty good songs. The songs are strong enough to carry it despite some really poor and lazy production. I can imagine BS taking him no more than half an hour from idea through to final product. The drum breaks in Lolita are exactly the same preset as they are in Love – and in both cases just sound out of place and badly programmed (or sequenced). Get on the Boat is all over the place production-wise. His voice when he shouting out to “the band” is, in places way too loud in the mix. Then during one of the sax or piano solos towards the end the whole mix quietens. The whole song doesn’t sound right. But I like it anyhow.

I think BLAB is the best produced song on the album and 3121 is the rawest song – the real Prince… Anyway, I do like the album shed loads more than Musicology and the NPGMC albums. But it aint rocket science and I reckon he pulled it all together pretty quickly and then moved on. He probably moved on a year ago the thing was so late in being released. Maybe that’s why he isn’t promoting it – he’s bored with it.

The true test of its staying power will be how many of the lyrics I actually end up learning. I can sing along to most of his classic albums in their entirety, but not sure I will be soaking up his verbal ramblings so eagerly this time around. I don’t know the words to a single song on Musicology (thankfully!).

I still like it a lot. Even songs I didn´t care for at first
I find myself liking them now, like Incence and Candles or Get
on the Boat.

It's not as good as 1999, PR, or SOTT but there aren't many albums out there that are. It's pretty good. Wouldn't mind seeing it live.

It's also 2 decades apart from those. I don't know any artist who sounds the same after 20 years. Maybe the Stones.

Gotta say fair play to "3121". For me it's a familiar process of getting into a new Prince album. Initially really liking a couple of tunes, and only playing them, then another track sneaks through the net, until there's a whole bunch you're listening to. So u hold your hands up and say "Fair play Prince. U got me again". My bunch at the mo? - 3121 (best thing he's done in years), Lolita, Love, The Word, BL&B (love the end groove) & Get on the boat. Definitely a feel-good album with a freshness to it from a man who seems more confident and at ease. Thank god, after the dross of Musicology.

And for first time since "The Gold Experience", I'd like to seem him tour with this record.

I call 'bollocks' on this specific point. He could have left the first 3:11 of it as it was, chopped it there for the radio edit, left the drum sequence running, plugged in his bass, then when done with that, plugged in his bazz, then when done with that, record some coo keyboard overdubs, get Sheila in for some crazy ass percussion solo, and bamm, an 11 minute sexathon that lives up to the promise of the first 3 minutes.

You fucking missed a trick there, P. And I so hate to say it!

lol I'm allowed to not like a song if I want to. What does not liking a song have to do with hating on religion or whatever?

It's a weak album. We shouldn't ask for or expect the sheer delight in the surprise of a Prince album as was the case with his first through Lovesexy. After that, he didn't really sound that different from everyone else. He had a run that was rare outside of Stevie Wonder and The Beatles for a long time. It was great and we are still enjoying it. It's unfair to expect it now. There are two or three moments on almost every album after Lovesexy that are outstanding. Don't ask for more. How can anyone give it?

He has ...this is a little drastic.

1980-1988
1992-1996
2001-2003

are all super eras.

Nope. Still Prince's most listenable album beginning-to-end.
Imperfect, but even his great albums are imperfect.

I think 3121 sounds like what Emancipation wouldv'e been if it had been only one album. Not hating but 3121 and Musicology are so damn 'clean' sounding. Rainbow Children is practically a punk album when put next to them.
Ya'll know the brutha goes through periods where he's actually making adventurous music and then periods where he just wants to be popular. We're in the latter right now. Still got that ego to feed.

His sound is becoming too polished sounding in my opinion... I don't see longevity in this sound..

I'm speakin on this Emancipation/Musicology/3121/Npgmc albums too..

the rawness has... vanished

I agree to an extent and you can throw Rave in there. As long as I get albums like The Truth and TRC every now and then I can live with it. Besides, I can appreciate/enjoy songs I consider to be of lesser quality.

I still wish more songs popped out the way Black Sweat does (the best thing he's done the TGE singles, IMO), and songs like Love and BLB are just kinda there, but it's an enjoyable album. I stick with my B+ grade.

I listened to 3121 twice over the past weekend and although I like the entire cd a lot, the only songs that I find that are really great and stand out for me are:

The Dance
Incense and Candles
Love
The Word

The rest are ok, but not great IMHO.

Crap from day one. Hopefully he realized how bad it was and is planning on returning to musicianship and following his own muse as opposed to following current radio trends.
No hard feelings.
