Prince aint using all his gifts anymore...

So many of us talk about our feelings about 3121 and prince´music in general..Many of these dicussions talk about the new music (new means..from the mid 90´s till now)...and..
how its not as good as the Glory days in the 80´s...Im one of those people that would be satisfied if I never heard another note from him (on records) after Lovesexy...Today it hit me ...I discovered whats missing for me..Its one of his greatest gifts..and the only thing that put another (more human) spin on his arrogant , (im the man) persona back in the days...HIS GREAT SENSE OF HUMOUR...today i pulled out my old vanity 6 album and was FLOORED !!! by the funkiness of "If a girl answers dont hang up" The bassline..the beat..the synths..and most of all HIS HUMOUR !!!!! there was some magic back in the days when he was still a MPLS "homeboy" with morris, jerome, jellybean, jesse, terry and jimmy jam and the whole crew...I felt like i knew these guys ..and it came out in the music too...Purple rain was very funny...so was under the cherry moon..even SOTT with housequake..the quirky lyrics in half the tunes..him having fun telling the band to hit him with some chicken grease..talking about ..you can burn up my clothes...smash up my ride..(well maybe not the ride) lol in the middle of a ballad like adore..There was some definite magic in his personality that seems dead when I listen to his stuff today...go on and flame away (those of you that dont agree)...Im just speaking my mind and trying to figure out why Prince´new music is boring as hell to me and disposable..but a little jam he probably did in a few hours back in 82 is the BOMB !!! still...??? confused oh well..

I do wonder where that silliness did go though?

Good observation. He lost his sense of humor starting with "Graffiti Bridge," I think, when he started getting all righteous and crusader-ish. He gave Morris's character all the funny lines and cast himself as this dour, humorless Jesus freak. And the slave thing later on showed just how seriously he was taking himself.

I think he's loosening up. "Lolita" sounds playful and relaxed, but most of all it sounds like a Prince song that reflects where he's actually at right now in his life.

I think the Dance is funny. Not because it's meant to be, but because it does something the old Prince used to do--be a complete psycho on wax.

I've always thought Prince had a great sense of humour that often came out of his records. When Come first came out, I thought, "Where's his sense of humour gone? It was so serious and dour" but then not much later Exodus came out and it was like Prince had saved up all his humour for that album, I laughed all the way throught the first time I played it.

I think his humour is still there - when he talks he is a very spontaneously witty person - but it has become more refined, adult and less obvious. Songs like Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance, On The Couch contain humour - Prince, being forced to sleep on the couch?! and 3121 and Lolita contain little bits of cheeky humour.

So I can't agree. The humour's still there, even after all these years.

I think in concert it's there, too. He can still be hilarious.

Larry recently played as warm-up act for The Time in Vegas where Prince accompanied them on stage for a few songs. Larry also guested onstage with Prince at one of his own Vegas shows. So, for better or worse, he's still around...

Are you telling me that for his birthday yesterday, I should've sent him a joke-book instead of that label-maker?

Damn,
he's probably gonna regift it.

Probably to Larry.

I don't want Larry using a label-maker that I paid for with my hard-earned money.
