I think some fans' listening experience is affected by the controversy over the lack of promotion and the disappointing chart performance of 3121.

Oh yeah, I think so. When 3121 leaked, and I listened to it and was aware of all the promo that was going on at that time (in America at least), and got incredibly excited, believing that it was his best work yet, and that he was going to be on top again and yes I would be vindicated amongst my friends and there would be a huge tour and so on and so on. As the realisation that he was (or someone was) screwing the promotion for his newest album down the drain once again began to set in, I quickly got bored with the album. Of course, weeks down the line it starts to work its way into my musical consciousness, which pleases me: I hated Parade and SOTT ... even Lovesexy when I first heard them.

Just tour the frickin' UK, for the love of God, please Prince. And bring your goddamn drum machine as well as Mr Blackwell! You OWE me that extended version of Black Sweat, Prince, ya hear? YOU OWE ME!!!!!

Chris Law apologises for the use of multiple exclamation marks. He was just... mad at the time.

Not only did I NOT sour on it... I'm actually lovin' it more and more. Even songs I didn't care for initially, I'm liking more and more that I hear it.

For example: "Get on the Bus" isn't my fave in terms of the cd as a whole, but - it is funky, especially from the middle to the end with Maceo!

This is my favorite Prince album in a LOOOOONG time. dancing jig

I tryed selling my 3121 copies on ebay, but no one would bid. Seems Prince isn't worth a opening bid of one penny.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

I haven't soured on it. But I only listen to select songs now.

I can 't believe my two favorites now are Satisfied and The Dance ...who would have thought... razz

Third is 3121, followed by Fury.

I would take a lot to get me to play Lolita and Black Sweat, I'm so over them.

same here..i only listen to Lolita, Fury, The Word, BLB, The Dance and Get On The Boat...

but these songs, IMHO, are classics.....so i still give the album a thumbs up....black sweat, 3121, ti elmo are okay songs...Love would be a killer instrumental jam.....and incense and candles and satisfied are the only two songs that way the album down....IMHO.

It's not as good as 1999, PR, or SOTT but there aren't many albums out there that are. It's pretty good. Wouldn't mind seeing it live.

::Sigh:: If every album sounded like SOTT people would say that he is unoriginal. Prince can't make every album SOTT, anyway a bad album or two makes you like your favorite better.

Has ANYONE who loves 3121 since the onset come to their senses and realize it's just not all it could be?

No more cock and bull reviews JUST those who love it and now dont feel the same way anymore.

---

Im judging 3121 against everything from "When Doves Cry" to that 'Dont make me eat the swine song... and everything else in between.

Starting off i would say i wasnt impressed 5/10 and it has been downhill from then on. Half of "Love" i enjoy until the missy rap,
"The Word" and "The Dance" are good songs, the rest bollox. 3/10

None of these tracks would make it into my top 150 Prince compo, Although Fury from SNL was astounding. eek lol and probably would

Well I'm listening a little less... but loving it even more.

I purposely pull myself from listening to songs I like to much so that I won't get a 'tired ear' for them.

The result is best felt when I play my fav tracks as part of a massive random playlist... therefore when ever 'Love', 'I&C', 'The Dance ', BL&B' or 'The Word' comes up... i'm totally geeked to hear them.

When i do listen to the whole album... the onlysong I'll occasionally skip over is satisfied.

Otherwise... I'm still loving this album on the whole as much or if not more than when I first got it.

I'm just dis-appointed that Prince has self -destructed another fine effort which should have reached more people via bad promotion and mis-management.

I havent played it this week, but I havent heard the 1999 album for a whilst either but that does not mean I no longer think its a great album, just like 3121. Its better to give things a rest otherwise you start hating them.

THE WORD
Category: Music

Funkiest joint in a long, long, long time!
I'm hardly a Jehovah's Witness - in fact some might wrongly think I'm on the side of the "spiders" - LOL. And 10 years inside Paisley Park didn't convince me that Prince should be my rabbi. BUT anything as funky as "The Word" might entice me to convert!!
But then I've always been a music before lyrics person....if the jam doesn't grab me, I might not even get around to the spoken. In this case the track is so hypnotic and the lyric so rhythmically tight, I can play past the proselytizing. OR just plain spin it to my liking - face it, any lyric in 2006 that encourages peeps to get off their butts and take action (ANY damn action) is refreshing on a certain level.
The point is, if your not a believer in the Word....ignore the words and believe "The Word" because it's the freshest Prince funk track since BEFORE I worked for him. I don't know what P's been listening to lately, but his party menu might have run the gamut from Kongotronics to "Voodoo" on the day he wrote and produced this sinewy treasure. Thankfully under-produced over a seductive percussion track, the subtle placement of the Jay Rodriguez-sounding "horn" lick (sample? keyboard?) is pure genius. FRESH, dangerously funky and inspiring.....if we still had vinyl I'd have already worn the grooves out.
Whether you be a non-believer or someone who spends every day in Kingdom Hall, check out "The Word".
Word!
P.S. "Lolita" is cute and "Fury" rocks (more guitar, less keyboard on the next pass, please - if it's gonna rock, damn it let it ROCK!)

neutral Well, I guess one has to choreograph a seduction to Satisfied to truly appreciate it. razz

That line "I can get you out of your body...have you ever felt like you were dying..." is SO beautiful to me.

I have. The more I listen to it, the more I realize that Prince has genuinely changed into another individual. Hard to believe that this is the same guy who wrote the classics we all know and love. It's almost as if he's deliberately undermining the funkiness of his work. Black Sweat is too subdued and minimalist -- not to have been written that way on purpose.

It is intentional that it's lacking funk furvor...not exactly sure why he did this.

YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! He purposefully restrained himself on this album. There's no other explanation! Only Prince knows why....I'm sure you all know how easy it would've been to funk up Black Sweat! He didn't want to make this a hit. It's like he's testing us to see if we truly love him....

cool I will admit the first time i played it i thought the album was not all that. The second time i listened, i really got more into it. Now, i cannot stop playing it at least once or twice during the week. It grew on me & i still think it's the best work since Musicology. music

I think 3121 sounds like what Emancipation wouldv'e been if it had been only one album. Not hating but 3121 and Musicology are so damn 'clean' sounding. Rainbow Children is practically a punk album when put next to them.
Ya'll know the brutha goes through periods where he's actually making adventurous music and then periods where he just wants to be popular. We're in the latter right now. Still got that ego to feed.

His sound is becoming too polished sounding in my opinion... I don't see longevity in this sound..

I'm speakin on this Emancipation/Musicology/3121/Npgmc albums too..

Yea hes a long way from the "Dirty Mind" funk. I would love a raw demo sounding cd like that. Everytime I hear "Get on the Boat" I can't help but think it's a wedding band doing Prince..
