Dude, it's no use. When people can't figure somehting out they start making up their own little stories. Funniest thing about prince.org is that when you tell people how things do work, they refuse to listen.

I just believe Prince doesn't really care about bootleggers that much. I mean, if someone is at the soundboard 20 metres away recording him who shouldn't be there, you think he or security might notice.

Yeah, sure, like the guy recording is standing there with a mic on a 20ft pole.

I've always wondered where some of the high quality bootlegs come from. I would have thought each night there would be just one person doing the soundboard? Pretty easy to identify the bootleg leak then. Are all Soundboarder's corrupt then? Does he have to fire them every other night? How hard can it be to stop a soundboard tape from leaving with a bootlegger? "Errr, could you please hand over that bundle of tapes you're trying to hide under your jumper?"

There really aren't that many soundboard bootlegs out there.

I would have to guess that a relatively small investment in some handy-dandy "spy" equipment could do the trick for getting a recording device past security. Not a bad investment to spend some extra money on a clever recording device if you're a company that specializes in making bootlegs.

The sad thing to me is just how quickly these guys operate. It seems like they only need about a good month and a half to get something out. It's sad to me because at that rate, they'll always beat Prince, unless Prince throws caution to the wind. I just hope the bootleg doesn't scare Prince away from making an "official" live release.

Yeah I'm inclined to agree. Most of what I've run across are "at large" type
recordings with crowd noise and such.

Still. I have run across burns of studio outtakes from pre-NPGMC days.
The question is who released these?

I just a preview posting of a new 12 CD set from this year's celebration. Xenophobia is being sold for $200. The CDs feature recordings of each night's guest as well as Prince's performances. One of the CDs even has Connie the fan's performance of Manic Monday.

These recordings *had* to have come from an official source. I'm finding it very hard to believe that an audience member could sneak into Paisley Park each and every night for 7 nights with a recording device.

Those Bootleggers should hook Connie the Fan up with the CD's...smile

I think this is the thing that people dont understand Joey. They dont appreciate that the digital recording devices are tiny and are designed to be easily hidden. The recording quality is amazing for the size.

These little units are around the size of a cigarette packet and can be shoved down your pants. The mics are the size of those little ear pieces like on a walkman. Only a full body search is going to find these mothers.

That's why it is easy to get an audience recording of a show. You would have to be a moron to get caught. I know you know this but I dont think many orgers understand how easy it is.

On another topic, how in the fuck can Premium charge $200 for 12 CDR? What a fucking rip-off!

I didn't see her "reading" any lyric sheet. And some people did feel it was planned...particularly since that was a "Bangles" song written by Prince. But...then...who really cares if it was planned or not, she did a good job.

Thi is the MOST absurd thing I have EVER heard! (Yet I seem to hear it all the time).
You all seem to have this wierd fetish to think Prince is conspiring and sneaking around and all this wierd top secret crap.
The first NIGHT someone was busted for taping the shows...
The second DAY I walk into the studio where they were playing the new NPGMC CD's and who is sitting at the board?
Let's just say that there were about SIX folks sitting AT the board and EACH one of them were there for more reasons than just seeing a Prince concert!
So how do you guys think these shows got out there?
Idiots...

Oh, and as far as the outtakes and older soundboard shows are concerned... I have a number of tapes in my personal collection that were given directly to females Prince may have been dating or "wooing" at the time of the recordings. This is NOT Prionce GIVING STUFF TO BE BOOTLEGGED... it's Prince not even having a THOUGHT about bootlegs because back then he was not so popular. He gave the tapes out as friendly gestures.
Take the Apollonia tape for instance... Apollonia was having trouble sleeping... So Prince records some songs and gives her a tape (some of the songs ended up on the Apollonia 6 record BTW)... The songs are not in circulation, but if they were... Would this mean Prince gave the tape just so that it WOULD be bootlegged?

God some of you people are stupid.

Well, that settles it then. Every woman who ever slept with Prince was given a tape of unreleased music that became a bootleg. Therefore, Mani is the mastermind behind the Xenophobia boot. wink razz

Audience tapers are not as sophisticated as you think they are. A guy in New York was seen taping at the ONA shows and aftershow with microphone wires hanging out of the pockets.

I still think 7 nights of shows recorded inside Paisley Park without anybody getting busted had to have come from an inside source.

And "coincidentally" those are the worst recordings of the ONA tour out there. Sure, you can even sneak a video camera in a concert venue, but most of the time people really use those kind of devices as described by bkw. The smaller the device, the easier it's to hide it and the better your chances are of not getting caught.

I guess we'll never know for sure, but I am convinced that Prince himself is the one who is bootlegging his own stuff. He seems to have a nonchalant attitude about bootlegs, like he doesn't care if his fans hear this stuff. He's got to know that companies like Sabotage and Thunderball exist, but is he trying to close down these companies? In a 1996 interview,he said that he understands a fan's need to hear *EVERY* recording by their favorite artist. He also said that,as a youngster,he looked for every James Brown bootleg he could find.

I think he realizes that,in his lifetime,it would be impossible to officially release everything he records (thru normal means). So,why not just set up a few "bootleg record companies" and sell the extra stuff that the true fan would pay a fortune for? He gets the chance to make some extra money AND a chance to release all the music he can (and he DID say that he wants to "flood the market",remember). There are just too many great-sounding recordings that somehow "escape" from the locked Paisley Park vaults. Not all of it,but a good portion of it HAS to come from an official source.

Ofcourse having knowledge of a bootleg is something totally different than releasing it or being the one who leaked the material on purpose.

Dude it has been explained before, but it looks like you guys want to keep the myth alive that Prince is leaking material because he's so prolific and wants to please his fans.

The point you seem to be missing is this: shit doesn't get pulled hot off the reels and escorted by armed guards down to "the vault". The majority of outtakes that made it onto the bootlegs were either

A) seriously considered at one time or another for release, and therefore were circulated in professional circles at WB/Paisley Park/Library of Congress/etc

B) given to other artists for their own consideration

C) given to numerous unnamed associates/girlfriends/musicians as gifts.

Prince's prolific recording practices and high profile career guarantees that there will be LOTS of stuff outside the walls of his own recording studio for any number of reasons. Over time, things change hands many times amongst friends and *sometimes* make it to bootleg, depending on the quality of people you surround yourself with. Of course there have been incidents of people working for Prince selling shit directly out of his backdoor, but most of it is far less exciting and romantic than that. The theft and backstabbing in all of this takes place not at Paisley Park or Prince's home, but amongst people who shared cool stuff with each other and got snaked by someone who wanted to make a buck.
