opening for the stones in 1981 Hi,
I am a graduate student in American studies working on a paper about Prince and his early years. What I am looking for in particular are accounts, reviews, personal reminiscences, etc. of concerts on October 9 and 11, 1981, where Prince opened for the Rolling Stones. I am curious about the negative reception he received in those two shows. If anyone on this board was actually there or knows of written accounts (reviews, from fans, whatever) of the shows and can point me in that direction, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. You can reply here or email me at briancomfort@cox.net. Thanks, Brian | |

There was a fan who posted here a while back who was at one of the '81 Stones concerts and gave a review of what he saw happening before and after Prince went on stage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

all i could find so far.... i'll keep looking....
Prince first attracted attention for the colorful clothes he put on his 5 foot, 4inch frame (1.63 m). He wore high-heeled shoes and boots, and when questioned by the press he remarked he liked the way he looked in them. In his early years, he liked to dress provocatively. He also was known to strongly flaunt and express his sexuality while on stage and in his music, which had people questioning his sexual orientation early on. This bought him some trouble as an opening act for The Rolling Stones' two Los Angeles Coliseum shows in 1981, where he was infamously pelted with garbage whilst wearing underwear and a trenchcoat. Prince was actually booed off the stage that night, a clip of which was later used by Prince for his "Pop Life" single in 1985 (if you listen, you can actually hear one member of the audience yell "throw the bum out.") no one understood picasso at first either.... i love you for who you are, not the one u feel u need to be.

thanks, y'all, for your help. does anyone know if The Audience is still on this board? If he/she is, and is reading this, I'd love to talk to you about that 1981 Stones show.

Brian Yeah, The Audience is always over in the Non Music section. U should org him. I remember hearing about it first hand when it actually happened. A girl that I went to grade school Jr. High with, her dad went to the first show and the next day, he told me what happened. Plus, the dj's on KLOS, a rock station here in L.A., were playing clips from P's set to show how loud the booing was. They were making a big joke about it, going so far as to suggest what the fans who were going to the next show, should bring with them to throw at P. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
