Back in the day...

cry
Does any1 else miss the dayz when Prince released an album a year and you used to get butterflies in your tummy when u found out the release date. Then get up early to make a mad dash 4 to the 'stow to get 1 of the first copies? Get home in lightening speed to rip it open... put it on and druel over the artwork etc?

The same with singles to find out what dat b-side woz!?

Ho-hum... those were the dayz! I think the last time I had that feelin' woz with Graffiti Bridge or Diamonds and Pearls.

I remember virtually running the 30 minute route into town from work (in my lunch hour) just to get my hands on the newest 7" single release, purely to check out the title of the B side..then having to wait a few more hours to get home and play it !!

Oh yes,I remember those days.Back then,a new Prince album was usually released in the spring, just before summer. So, around March or April you'd be hearing the first single on the radio and the video would be all over MTV.I remember staying home from work just to catch the MTV world premiere of the "Batdance" video in June 1989!

There used to be sooo much excitement with a new Prince album! I would have a hard time sleeping the night before a new album came out. When morning rose,I would rush to the record store and be one of the first fans to buy the new Prince album.Back then,I would buy the actual vinyl album AND the cassette to play in my Walkman.

It was absurd how prolific Prince was back then.Only months after a new album came out,we would be hearing news of the NEXT album! I remember picking up an issue of Rolling Stone magazine, and there was a news headline that read "New Prince album 'Lovesexy' due in May".And this was at a time when 'SOTT' and 'The Black Album' were still getting alot of attention.

Remember when there was always news about a new album,a tour,a movie,a side project/collaboration,etc?

I remember when I was not the only person in the store waiting to buy a Prince album. When I bought Rave, the clerk wasn't even aware that Prince still made music.

I remember delaying my gratification because I was sure, with every new album, that the genius was over and his perfect record was about to be shattered, every year. And of course I was wrong every year - it only got better and better. Until 1990 - Graffiti Bridge and all the shitty guest stars shook the boat a little. The next year Diamonds and Pearls pretty much brought the whole shit down. Oh well. I've learned to take every record for what it's worth since then.

All the same, you can't beat a period of flawlessness as we had, 1980-1989

Those days are gone because the world has changed. The way music is distributed has changed. Prince is at the forefront of that change.

I am old enough to remember all the anticipation and waiting for the latest Prince B side or new album. I do miss it but it has gone the way of most childhood pleasures and yielded to the perpetual change that you will have to deal with as long as you are alive.

Today, we dont have too wait. PRince can send us music as soon as he gets ready. He did it with Xenophobia: mentioned a copy of a live cut and delivered it a week after the celebration. If it was still the way it was in the 80s we would still be waiting and may have never gotten it. Children of the record company reign dont know anything else. Better wake up. Prince is moving on.

Oh I agree! He is moving on and leading in the best direction. I just miss all the mystery and excitement. It also has alot 2 do with the fact that I was only 17.

I remember that too. Actually up to Emancipation, i used to get so excited about a 'new prince record'. I'm not holding out for this feeling--cuz it's not going to happen--but i do miss it.
I was in Chicago when Emancipation came out, and he had the Oprah interview, and then did a show later at the Park West. The Man used to get so many people excited.

Now you're lucky if you hear him on the radio.

Is this really what he wants? Or is it ultimate control...over a music club of 5-10,000 members? Wasn't it about owning the masters? Arista let him keep the masters, EMI did too.
I don't get it anymore, and i used to.

Shit---I remember going to buy Prince releases the day they came out at only special record stores..it couldnt be just any record store. It had to be a Licorice Pizza. Before they were released they usually had previews of songs on th e radio...once the day before ATWIAD came out they played Raspberry Beret and once the drum beats hit and u heard that "one, two"...I KNEW it was Prince. Id also buy th e Sunday L.A. times to get the Calander section to read the prerequiaite review that would be there the Sunday before his releases.

Yep it use to truly matter to run down&get it.I Bought Album&Tape as well also with the Paisley park Clan.but as someone else here stated after "Graffti Bridge" I wasn't so much in a Hurry as back in the 80's.still those times were fun.I use to Call Warner Brothers Publicity as well&they would say when something was gonna drop.they had a Time's Greatest Hits ready to go but it never was released.I think The Time&The Jacksons should have easily had a Greatest Hits IMHO.
