how many times have you played N.E.W.S.?

I have to admit, I probably only played it a couple times when it came out. Listening to it now again.. just wanted something mellow. It's nice as background music, or for just relaxing. Maybe dinner music?

What do ya'll think of N.E.W.S. these days? Still play it? Ever played it more than once?

It's good "drive home from work and unwind" music.

I play NEWS fairly often. Good background music whilst doing homework n stuff. And there some really great parts in there: Prince's guitar solo in the climax of North; the chord progression at the start of West; the drum and bass work of South as well as the sax solo near the end.

Same here, even though I could count the number of times on one hand.

Still a boring, bland, uninspired piece of shit as far as I'm concerned.

That's my "unwind" CD. Usually play it all the time along with Meshell's "Infedel" CD.

I like it, and I used to play it quite often.
Can't understand why so many people hate it.
I think it was really cool of Prince to pull off something like that,
we needed it from him, but maybe not in that time of his career...

Five or maybe six times for me.

Funny story, though: I know a guy who's all into 70s and 80s hard rock. He freely praises Prince's musicianship, but can't stand Prince's records. However, for some reason I burned a copy of NEWS for him, and he loved it! Go figure... shrug

this thread isnpired me to listen to it last night as i went to sleep. it works wonders for insomnia! lol

just kidding, just kidding.

i'm not sure what prince was trying to do with this record. was it supposed to be a jazz recording? something experimental? a side project type thing for which he was just too uninspired to think up a new band name?

i really don't think its anything special. it sounds like watered down, elevator style jazz performed by a novice.

News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

This is Prince's hidden gem. A truly fascinating album that is waaay too easily overlooked. I see it as Prince's buried treasure that even a large number of his fans will find hard to dig up until a certain point when they'll finally realise how beautifully colorful it all is.

To those who haven't managed to truly appreciate it, take another listen. That's not meant as a dismissive or patronising comment, but as a genuine request to give it another go. The depth of the album is incredible and it's intricacies are only appreciated after a number of listens. Who needs lyrics when the music can take you to places that only you can interpret? And as for 8m:30s into West... how beautiful do you want your Prince music to be?

A number of us so wish for non-fans to appreciate his music. This album is the opportunity for some of us to know how those non-fans feel and with NEWS, we have the ability to try and discover a Prince album that we'd never given a second chance to previously.

Very nice comments... I can definitely agree, I am feeling it more now than when it first came out. I can't focus on it, though... my mind wanders. I like it best in the backround when i'm playing online, or writing, or even reading. It's comfortable to have on, in a way.
