The remastering, definitely. Yeah yeah, I know he's got money and spiritual beliefs to look after, but don't make us wait forever.. I wasn't born in the vinyl generation. sad

Yeah. I just checked out some of his "specials" starring Nona Gaye and that other Latin looking babe, the Undertaker thing, and they come off like excuses to hook up with hot little starlets. Which I totally understand. I won't begrudge the man for having desires, but at the same time it's hard to admire such transparent grab-assing. I would be much more forgiving if the music were more electric.

he didnt write that song, eek ??? I never knew that. Who wrote it????

Sandra St. Victor (i think there might have been a couple of other writers too). But Prince princified the lyrics. I got this from Housequake:

"Princified

I met The Artist in 1996 at the offices of Warner Brothers in LA. He came in sucking on a lollipop and being shy. I actually dug him instantly. We talked about what he thought I should do at that time musically. I was impressed with his forthrightness. He surprised me by saying that the album after Soft and Wet, which was his first big hit, was sort of a compromise for him! His advice was that I follow the same route. The route being, give them half an album of what they want, ‘they’ being the record label, and do what you want with the other half. Since I had felt and do still feel, that this album was as brilliant as his first, I had never conceived that this could be a compromise! But with this in mind, and after more conversations, we both went on to see what we could come up with.

Long story short, he sent me 5 songs, which he had re-done, ‘Princified’ if you will, from my lyrics. These songs are “Love Is” (Van Gogh), “I’ll Never Open My Legs Again” ( I’ll Never Be Another Fool), “Sanctuary”, (Soul Sanctuary), “Nothing Left To Give” (Heart Of Stone), and “How We Livin’ “(Livin’ To Die). Some of the originals are available on my site.

When “Emancipation came out, WITH Soul Sanctuary on it, it was a surprise to me! I went about finding out what I could via my publishing company, and swifty received a check from his majesty in the mail. But since then, I’ve seen these songs coming out here and there, with no form of recognition or royalty for myself or the other writers that worked with me on the songs. The only one that I knew of beforehand was “I’ll Never Open My Legs Again” ( I’ll Never Be Another Fool), and that’s because Chaka told me of course. Anyway...

I totally dig Mr. Man, but I don’t understand why someone as talented as him works like this.

Love & Light, SSV"

On "Soul Sanctuary": Ain't a big deal imo. Listen to the original song on her website - musically, it has nothing to do with Prince's song (hers is shit btw). The only resemblance are the lyrics. So Prince felt inspired by someone else's lyrics to write a beautiful song to the (modified) words and gives credit to the original writer (and pays her). What's the problem? The only thing is: he could have asked her before doing it. Especially since he's so picky about the use of his own music.

I wish Prince wasn't so scattered. Often he'll come up with a great idea, but since he can't release it that day, it gets put on the shelf. I look at the LONG list of Prince's partial projects (CB 2, 1988's Rave, Madhouse 24, JJ 2nd album, Vanity 6's 2nd album, Rosie's album, Bonnie Rait's album, Roadhouse Garden, his entire collection of New Masters, Flesh, Rebels, etc.) and as a fan, I want them all! Even his post-album behaviour is sometimes lacking with follow thru. Emancipation was supposed to be a 2 year project and yet he really stopped promoting it soon after it was released. Same thing with SOTT, the tour stopped before he got to America because he was itchy to move on to the next project.

Yes we've gotten a lot of great work from him, but sometimes it would be nice to do a little more follow thru and focus.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Ooh... Just heard 'Sanctuary' on her website. I hadn't heard her version before. Yeah, musically it is totally different (don't like it razz ). I didn't know about that. Thanks for the info.

Gold Experience for starters. It's produced within an inch of its life--tracks galore, sound effects, etc. Most of his albums since Lovesexy could be called over-produced.

From the booklet that came with Emancipation:

Soul Santuary
Lyric co-written by Sandra St. Victor "unbothered by the chaos swirling around outside..." Beautiful lyric written by Sandra. Speaking 2 the heart... reflections live 4ever in mirrors.

To say that she didn't get credit for this song is stupid.
She must not have actually gotten the CD and read the liner notes! I hadn't even looked at the booklet in several years and still remembered it being there.
As for the other songs.... Van Gogh was never released as far as I remember on any OFFICIAL Prince album....Neither was Livin' 2 Die or Heart of Stone...I may be wrong on those three, but SHE DID GET CREDIT FOR SANCTUARY.

It's not just about recognition. SSV seems to feel that she and other writers are not receiving the monetary recompense they're due.

My only problem with Prince these days is his refusal to work with Warner Bros. to have his CDs remastered. The sound quality on most of his CDs ('Dirty Mind','Controversy','1999' and 'SOTT' especially) is flat and lifeless. His catalog is begging to be remastered, with well-written liner notes, rare photos and some cool bonus tracks. He's feuding with Warners and refuses to look at the situation from a fan's perspective. How many of us would lose our minds if he released a 2-CD "Purple Rain" Deluxe Edition with a ton of bonus tracks? How many of us would rush out to the record store to buy a remastered 'Dirty Mind' CD with several bonus tracks ("Lisa","Broken",etc)? Every major artist (Michael Jackson,Madonna,Fleetwood Mac,Santana,Earth Wind and Fire, etc) has had their catalogs upgraded and remastered by now.For fans and collectors,it's alot of fun to buy this stuff.I resent the fact that Prince doesn't see the importance of doing this.I guess he's waiting until he has complete ownership of his masters, but how many decades are we gonna have to wait?
