whats the 20% that you like?

i don't like the fact that Graffiti Bridge (the moviee) stunk..., or that fact that most albums after lovesexy are hard to find in stores but thats not really his fault. and of course the remastering of his back catalog. other than those nothing really...
chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

Sandra St. Victor (i think there might have been a couple of other writers too). But Prince princified the lyrics. I got this from Housequake:

"Princified

I met The Artist in 1996 at the offices of Warner Brothers in LA. He came in sucking on a lollipop and being shy. I actually dug him instantly. We talked about what he thought I should do at that time musically. I was impressed with his forthrightness. He surprised me by saying that the album after Soft and Wet, which was his first big hit, was sort of a compromise for him! His advice was that I follow the same route. The route being, give them half an album of what they want, ‘they’ being the record label, and do what you want with the other half. Since I had felt and do still feel, that this album was as brilliant as his first, I had never conceived that this could be a compromise! But with this in mind, and after more conversations, we both went on to see what we could come up with.

Long story short, he sent me 5 songs, which he had re-done, ‘Princified’ if you will, from my lyrics. These songs are “Love Is” (Van Gogh), “I’ll Never Open My Legs Again” ( I’ll Never Be Another Fool), “Sanctuary”, (Soul Sanctuary), “Nothing Left To Give” (Heart Of Stone), and “How We Livin’ “(Livin’ To Die). Some of the originals are available on my site.

When “Emancipation came out, WITH Soul Sanctuary on it, it was a surprise to me! I went about finding out what I could via my publishing company, and swifty received a check from his majesty in the mail. But since then, I’ve seen these songs coming out here and there, with no form of recognition or royalty for myself or the other writers that worked with me on the songs. The only one that I knew of beforehand was “I’ll Never Open My Legs Again” ( I’ll Never Be Another Fool), and that’s because Chaka told me of course. Anyway...

I totally dig Mr. Man, but I don’t understand why someone as talented as him works like this.

Love & Light, SSV"

Prince is a TRIP.

Gray, P has been doing shit like that. It comes across like he feels he's better than you are as a person, so that gives him a divine right to rip off folks. He used to do that quite a bit i.e., Andre, Sonny, Mark, Dez, etc. It's funny, all of the brothers that played with P are the only ones who will come flat out and say "Yeah, P took this from me and took the credit" where as someone like Bobby Z talks like he's STILL on P's payroll by always defending every fucked up thing P has done. It is a trip.

So, it's gonna be a Brutha vs. "Tha Man" answer?
What did Bobby Z write that Prince "Stole?"
As far as I can remember, most of the songs that the others wrote, they got credit for.... and I really don't think they will ever be broke....

Example of Credit versus "A Job"

Microsoft makes MILLIONS. The ppl that work for Microsoft to make the software that we all buy are paid to be there. Just cause they helped make it, don't mean that it's theirs. They can't get fired or quit and then go out and say, "Boo-Hoo! I want credit for the software I made for Microsoft! Show Me Da Money!" They did a job, and when it was over, it looked good on a resume'.

Same goes with former members of Prince's bands. They worked for Prince. He paid them for their creative output. IN FACT, some of the songs that Prince wrote, credit was given to other band members! In the Prince community, I'll bet you can ask any fan and they can name every member of every band Prince has ever had... Can you say the same for Springsteen.....Paul McCartny.. (Name all the members of Wings.. You can't... Can you?) They all need to stop cryin and take themselves to the bank and cash their checks.

That's all I have to say about that.
Thank U
Peace

I wonder how Prince feels about the fact that people are scared of him? He's very intimidating. I wouldn't want others to feel that way about me. It would embarrass me and make me feel uncomfortable.

The influence he allows Larry Graham to have over his life and how "inaccessible" he makes himself to fans. We did get the man where he is, after all.

Hmmm...I don't know about that sexy...he did open PP to the fans during the celebration...Rainbow Children listing party. Lots of celebs wouldn't dream of doing that... I mean he practicaly had a discussion with them on issues it sounds like...and he does invite fans onstage to dance with him. biggrin

He have done more things in the last five years or so, but he won't sign autogrpahs, doesn't do very many interviews and when he does you can only ask certain questions. I understand he doesn't want to get too personal and some stuff is nobody's business, but he's VERY closed off. He's definitely recently opened up more than ever before, but retains that "inaccessible" aura.

It seems to me that when it comes to creating original pieces of work (be it art, literature, or music) the person who creates the music gets the credit. The proceeds may go to the company that hired individual, but the CREDIT goes to that individual.
So, if Sonny, or Dez wrote a song and brought to Prince, the proper thing would be to give the credit for the song to the author. How much money Sonny would get for the song would depend on the contract that was signed.
Otherwise, Purple Rain would be credited to the owner of Warner Brothers music (the ones who bankrolled the project), not Prince (the one who created it.)

His Negitivity that he blinds himself to while singing Posititivty.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.
You have those internalized issues because you want to, you like to, stop.

my only problem with prince - the only thing that really and truly bothers me about him - is that, as brilliant of a musician as he is, and as effortlessly as lyrics and melodies seem to come to him, the man doesn't really care about music outside of his own little bubble. i hope he one day catches some weird bug that gives him a fascination with the rest of the world and the music that it creates...i'm not just talking about music of other cultures (though that would be HOT) - i'm talking about the music people are playing just down the street from him. i wish he'd really really DIG for diverse sounds and take the time to process them, regardless of whether he finds himself influenced by the music or not. he's so sheltered, and i feel like his music - as much as i enjoy it, even to the most recent album - is treading water, when there was a time when it didn't used to. i think prince knows a lot about making music, but i don't think he knows a lot about music in general - and i really think that is starting to wear on his own output.

Don't know how the rest of you feel about this, but I absolutely HATE it when Prince does cover versions of someone else's songs. I guess it's because Prince has sooooo many unreleased songs in the vault, I kinda wish he would release them instead of redoing someone else's music. My twocents.

nod You are truly right nurse. As an artist we know he is amazing but as a person...we that have never met him can't give a fair awnser because we have never met or interacted with him....every person that has met him and has told us about meeting him...well, that is their perception of him. Besides, maybe that is how Prince interacted with them...people act differently and respond differently to different people.

I've met girls who say they have met him...basicaly they said he was an asshole..but you know that is just what they think. Maybe he is one, but I've never met him so it's really not fair for me to say "Well Prince is a jerk because someone eles said he was".
