What's the story behind "Another Lonely Christmas" -- I refuse to believe it's all made-up. Sounds way too personal.

I have often wondered if this song was about a former love interest of his that died from AIDS complications. This would be supported by the following lyric:

Your father said it was pneumonia
Your mother said it was stress
But the doctor said you were dead
And I said, "Senseless."

Then again, this could be about as speculative as the one person on here who said Incense and Candles is about Bible Study.

Ooooh that is a really good guess. AIDS was very hush hush and frighting because it was such a mysterious disease back then.

I think the bath was just Dorothy's attempt to calm him. Completely innocent and he felt better afterwards and said "Next time I'll do it sooner" meaning next time he gets in an argument with his lady, he'll just take a bath and relax

Maybe. But with the pants on? I always assumed they were in the bath together, and maybe it was about being close without sexuality, since he's kinda going with someone.

Maybe the fighting stops when you get close to your woman without trying to have sex with her.

Have you ever gotten your pants wet? It's extra warm and has an interesting feeling. It was about doing something outside the box. Next time he argues with homegirl, he'll do it, not with the girlfriend, but alone. That'a what I got from it

Lemon Crush (sexual for sure, but is it some obscure act I've never heard about?)

"Lemon Crush" was a song he wrote about Anna Garcia, aka Anna Fantastic. She was a girlfriend/protege in the late 90s, and according to her, Lemon Crush was her favorite drink. But I only remember Orange Crush, and apparently so does Google:

BTW, "Vicki Waiting" was also supposedly about Anna. He changed it from "Anna Waiting" to fit the Batman theme.

"lemon crush" i believe is what english people call lemonade, or perhaps a 7-up-like drink...

Nope (okay Cindy C I was making a joke, though I really don't understand many of the lyrics on my bootlegged copy, and she really did say that, too)

The others I understand generally what they're about but have questions about specific lyrics--particularly 3 Chains. What are the chains? Who is the girl? It seemed like she's maybe a metaphor for his career.

Is it possible the 3 chains of gold refer to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost?

perhaps!

i also wrote up a silly theory about it in a school paper last year (keep in mind that i have built up this theory about his expression of 'love' earlier in the paper, and you won't see that part in the following)...

Gold as well as slavery appears as a prominent and repetitive motif through the mid-1990s, with much spiritual significance. An entire album is based on this theme (1995’s The Gold Experience). Gold flashes from all directions at the viewer in videos from prince: in lights, Mayte’s costume, jewellery, Prince’s “gun” microphone, etc. 3 Chains O’ Gold (prince) may symbolize his own ability to express agape. Are the three chains of gold on his heart the three aspects of love: eros, agape and philia? As it has been demonstrated above, Prince’s battle is with himself as well as those on the outside. The old Prince dies 7 times, and is reborn with the ability to love the woman to whom he destines himself, Mayte.

The “prince” symbol itself is loaded with utopian significance, and has a link with several recurring themes in Prince’s work. What the Artist called his “love sign” actually closely resembles the alchemic symbol for soapstone, traditionally an important ingredient in the making of gold. There is a spiritual significance in the color “gold,” but it is also related to Romantic incest themes:

Occultist and psychologist Carl Jung, adds: 'Alchemy...exalted the most heinous transgression of the law, namely incest, into a symbol of the union of opposites, hoping in this way to bring back the golden age.'19

i think english people generally call lemonade, lemonade.

Though there is some truth in what you say - lemon crush is one way of referring to "traditional" lemonade - good old fashioned make-you-wince-because-it's-so-sour type of lemonade. smile

Tho' these days that's more commonly referred to as traditional lemonade, not lemon crush. My nan might call it lemon crush.

yes, i'm as english as they come. smile

yeah, that is a bit lazy, but it does happen. And occasionally (this is worse), using 7up or Sprite as a generic word to mean lemonade. That's just stupid, really.

Like i say, we'd normally use 'traditional lemonade' when talking about home-made lemonade made with real lemons, and just 'lemonade' to mean the manufactured crap that you buy in big 2 litre bottles from the supermarket. drool

I have NEVER understood what Purple Rain was.

pearls before the swine is a bible reference.

Purple Rain, written for the movie, is basically an apology set to lyrics and music. Go back and read the words, and you'll see it crystal clear.

I think they mean, "what is purple rain?" Indeed, why would you want to see someone in purple rain?

Correct me if I'm mistaken,,,,

But isn't Dorothy Parker a real life character? In fact, Dorothy Parker is a famous poet, she created many jazz standards.

Yeah, but I think Prince just used the name... "Dorothy was a waitress..." I don't think the real one was "dishwater blonde" either.

Yes I read that Prince just came up with the name and Susannah Melvoin told him about the real Dorothy Parker afterwards. He didn't realise it was someone in history when he wrote it.

another one is power fantastic

if i was your girlfriend never got that exactly

If I Was Your Girlfriend is one of my absolute favorites. This song is the tighest game any man will ever have. It is the song of a man who envies the closeness of the relationship that his woman has with her girlfriend. Many men secretly wish that they had the kind of bond with their women that girlfriends do. P was one it with that one. He broke down how girls pick out their clothes together, share all their thoughts, go to the movies and cry together. That song was the shit!

I guess at that time it was probably inspired by Susannah, which is funny because I always thought she (oh, and Ingrid Chavez) was the lamest of all of Prince's women. Although as a twin, I know how men that my sister and I have dated have felt about the closeness of our relationship. So, I can see him writing it about her from that standpoint.

nod That song has been my dating philosphy and the ladies dig it! That level of closeness is hard to attain but when you do it's unbelievable. If I Was Your Girlfriend is the tightest love/relationship song I've ever heard and its also the deepest. cool
