Is it me, or are the SNL and Brit guitar trax pre-recorded?

Now, I've seen Prince shred the axe, up close and personal, so I know he can do it....And I make a habit of watching guitar player's hands while they play - especially good ones.

But something about these performances bothers me. I'd SWEAR he's not playing those solos live. Watch 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' from the Hall Of Fame show last year and then watch either of the 2 recent broadcasts of 'Fury'. Compare them.

Something's just..."off" with 'Fury'. Not saying he didn't play the licks, but I'm not convinced he played them live.

Maybe a guitar player or 2 here can tell me.

Noo way was that pre-recorded. What you might call "off" may either be due to

- bad audio/video sync of your footage or

- Prince's extensive use of the sustain function and pedal effects (some guitar player correct me please if my choice of words isn't quite accurate)

EVERY SINGLE TIME he's on the telly performing people come up with this. I don't know where you get this from, seriously. That's just nonsense.

I sat down and REALLY tried to give 3121 another chance, P had lost me already by Lolita.
All those handclaps and Stock Aitken Waterman keys. Sounds like S Club 7 featuring Prince. Utterly horrid.

You're seriously not watching the footage I'm watching! Everything Prince does is mirrored in the sound on mine... it may be possible to activate loops with pedals, but I don't know of any performance you could prove he's done that... besides, the way he pounds out chords is pretty loose and somewhat improvised, it would take more skill to mime it perfectly than it would to just perform it live!

Seems to me, often people download video files that are badly synched but don't realise it...

I wonder if this will go the same way as the Lovesexy guitar playing moment.

eek
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

The Sign O The Times video WAS mimed. The audio was recorded near the end of the tour, but the footage didn't come out right, so they re-did the footage of he concert miming to the earlier recorded audio. However, it wasn't a live performance, in the sense that they could go back and re-shoot anything that didn't look right or have several goes at it.

the 'Sign' movie was NOT filmed live....I have hours upon hours of footage from the filming...each song had MANY, MANY takes! That's why his guitar isn't plugged in.

Have you seen him running around on the Purple Rain Tour with his guitar? Once, twice around Bobby's drum kit? The movie was mimed, but he usually uses wireless systems anyway.

What a ridiculous post, why would he fake doing something he could readily do, just a stupid post!

Why didn't somebody get clotheslined when he threw the guitar off stage during the Lovesexy show?

Prince only "played" pre-recorded tracks on TV in 1995 (P. Control) & 1996 (Emancipation.) But he made an honorable effort anyway since the pre-recorded songs were different versions than the released one.

Maybe also his 1st TV appearence in 1979 was pre-recorded, i ain't sure (?)

Funny,

i had the same feeling when i first saw the live broadcast of the Syracruse concert during the Purple Rain tour.Even after rewatching the show on tape i still thought something was fishy with the guitar - and yes, although wireless systems weren't common in those times i still thought of these but i believe to remember that i didn't see *any* cable plugged in the output jack of his telecaster.

I mean, somehow i know he must have played live because he's great on guitar so i can't see a reason why he should have faked it but then again - even for wireless you have to have a cable plugged into the audio output.

Hmm...maybe i should watch the tape again smile
