I disagree.

Prince leaving WB was another case of Prince doing things HIS WAY. Sure, commercially it hurt him. It put him on the outskirts of the limelight in the music business.Ultimately, he kept his integrity and played the game by his rules. Plus, I think he made more money per record without WB, even with sluggish record sales. Prince going on his own is to be respected and he is now viewed as more of a pioneer/maverick for doing so. On top of that, he is basically ended up as famous and as "pop" as he would have/should have been all along.

All in all I am glad Prince stuck to his guns and chooses what he wants to do and how he wants to do it.

Only to your taste.
Looks like P is happy with it. We can't forget what his priority was all along.

Nah, staying with WB would've been really bad.

It would've meant more and more contrived attempts to get a hit, with more of that horrible hip hop trend following from Prince.

Also, would've meant saying goodbye to albums like TRC and NEWS.

Hmm, maybe the original poster has a point afterall.

Yeah, fuck it, it sucks. It would've meant awesome remastered Prince albums.

Sorry but Bono already said they got the idea from Prince. P will not get his masters because he rocked the boat in the first place and Maddonna's are not going to be worth anything to anyone but her (LOL)

umm..i was giving prince credit for u2's actions... shrug

Madonna owns her masters from Erotica forward... and after 35 years is it she gets the other masters.

Prince would be getting his masters very whether he stayed with WB or not. WB would have been in a better place to market him had he stayed but he might have just thrown out shit like NPS or Rave to make them happy and really worked on making great material.

If you're referencing what I think you are, that's not what Bono said. Prince attended an Elevation show and Bono mentioned that because of their manager, they had control of their masters. He didn't say it was because of Prince, or that they got the idea from Prince.

Universaluv

What happened, happened.

At the end of the day he's still a forty-something pop star who's biggest hit songs were 20 years ago. WB or not, that's a hard thing to market.

Staying with WB wouldn't be any guarantee that they'd be in a better position to market him than another label. Maybe he would've had great success, maybe he would've been even more bitter and released even more Chaos and Disorders...

At this point in his career he's crazy rich, well-respected among his peers, and recently debuted an album at #1. And he seems to be happier than he ever was with WB.

nod Definately. And tangibly too, there's quite a few songs that are less artistic and more dogmatic and basically bitter rants put to a recycled beat, and they just show an artist at the very bottom of the barrell, the lowest ebb.

I do agree with Universaluv, what happened, happened, it's been a decade already! And now he's in a strong commercial, and presumably financial, position - the best he's been in a very long time -- But that's a separate issue from the music, which is my main interest -- No chart positions or bank balance can polish a turd for me.

I do think there were better ways to handle the situation with WB - Being a little spoilt rich bitch in the media and calling yourself a slave, one who is a multi-millionaire who never had to work a 9-5 and globe-trots around the world, living in (might I say rathe gaudy and tasteless) oppulence, was a always going to be a bad P.R. move.

He could've worked it out with Warners more diplomatically, and could've been in a stronger position now regarding the masters.

Of course, this is all speculation, we don't know what went on behind the scenes, but I do find it all rather humourous to still see fans ranting about how WB are this big evil corporation. lol

Me too. In the long run I think it was a good decision financially, personally, and creatively. I doubt we could've gotten TRC or even Cnote under WB contract.

And being more independent allows him to keep the lions share of the earnings from the music HE created.

During the latter years with WB he seemed to alternate between anger and depression many times. That ain't good for anybody.

He's had some ups and downs, partly due to some of his choices, but also due to the nature of a music industry that favors the bottom line over quality art.

Props to him for doing his own thing on his own terms. I think he's at peace with his decision and I am too.

yeah, instead we got Exodus, NPG, MPLS, Sheila E and a host of other side albums...

I love Exodus...what's your point?

thats exactly my point..folks talk as if wb refused him an outlet for his artistic vision when i personally think it was the opposite...he found ways to release The Family, Exodus, the MPLS albums...and an NPG album...

being a gemini myself I know that sometimes i need someone to challenge me or to restrict me to get me to think outside the box..i excel in that enviroment..and something makes me think prince does as well...

now that he is content rolling in the green and has nothing to prove he rests on his laurels..which i think is furthest from what he should be doing...

he should be out there trying to be the Ali of music...

I gotcha, I think the word instead threw me off. If I recall, the fur started to fly at WB when they ousted Mo Ostin. P seemed to feel more restriction with the changing of the guard and I don't think it was purely his imagination. I maintain that albums like TRC could never have come out of that environment.

I'm also a Gemimi and I've been surrounded by Gemimi males all my life. Grandfather, Father, godfather, brother, and son. Hell, I even married one. lol Gems have no trouble thinking out of the box. I think you're referring to the tendency of Gemini males to be contrary at times just for the hell of it. lol Also, it should be noted that in some ways, P is not a typical Gem. A typical Gem is waaay more easygoing than P and has much less stamina and tenacity.

Back on topic, I still agree with his decision and I don't think the music has suffered one iota. It's still an amazing adventure for me full of hidden treasures as well as u-turns, blind alleys, and caves to explore.

Finally, I don't think he'd ever spend a lot of time resting on any laurels 'cuz that would be boring. If you're a Gem, then you know that boredom= a fate worse than death.

And don't forget the value of peace of mind. Can't put a price on that.

I never looked into it, but I'm thinking that the dates of the signs of the zodiac were set a long, long time ago - and since they change (very slowly over time) due to the precession of the equinoxes, that they are, today, incorrect. Since they go backwards in this precession, everyone should be about 1 sign backwards. So everyone who thinks they're dualistically Gemini might really just be a stubborn Bull! lol

Prince's troubles with WB sound to me like one of those fights you get into at work cuz of unresolved issues at home. By that I mean Prince and his fans were no longer connecting and he took all that pent up frustration out on his own record label.

Whatever was troubling him, it was more artistic than business. He just couldn't get it up artistically.

George Michael had a similar contract dispute with Sony right around the time he was having all his image problems. It's human nature. We get in fights with irrelevant people over things that don't really matter. To escape the true problem.

And the problem was the Kid wasn't packing 'em in like he used to.

When for the Gold Xperience, (which failed to sell well because of what WB called market saturation)
prince included the npg in some tracks but marjority of it did it himself

still making 2 to 3 dollers an album

Are you really blaming the commercial shortcomings of Gold Experience on Warners and market saturation?? Maybe, just maybe it was because he alienated 99% of the planet by acting like a pathetic, prissy little bitch and walking around everywhere for a year with "slave' scralled across his sad looking mug?? Yeah, maybe that appalling lack of any grasp on reality is what cost him all shreds of credibility.... ?

There is no doubt in my mind that 'TGE' would have been a massive success if Prince had not been feuding with Warners.I mean, come on...he didn't even release the "I Hate U" video, even though the song was doing well on radio!! This kind of silly, bratty behavior sealed the album's fate and I don't blame Warners at all.

If I recall correctly alot of WB's artists had problems with that decision. REM, Neil Young, Anita Baker all were unhappy with the direction of the label when Ostin left.
