5 Stages of Grief as it relates to new Prince albums If you are anything like me when a new Prince CD comes out you go through the following stages:
Denial (New Prince Project) is going to be the biggest hit of the year! Prince is back and better than ever! Anger Why won’t the radio play the new single from (New Prince Project)? God they are so narrow-minded! They would rather play crap from (fill in name of newly popular teeny-bopper band, hot rapper, G-rated male heartthrob, or emotive, ear-piercing diva here) than new Prince stuff. It pisses me off! I’m calling the station manager and cussing him out! Bargaining Prince needs to go on (fill in hot talk show host; i.e. Arsenio, Leno, Ellen, etc. here). That would save the project. He’s got to tour right now! If he can just keep the album in the Top 50, it could still be a hit. Come on, P. get out there! Depression (New Prince Project) has fallen out of the Top 100 already. I mean why didn’t he promote (New Prince Project) better. The single choices were terrible. Prince just doesn’t care. I don’t care anymore. God, I can’t believe I am still a Prince fan. I’m going to go listen to Purple Rain because right now I don’t even remember why I started like the man in the first place. Acceptance He’s still my man! (New Prince Project) is a great album and I don’t care what the (critics/stupid teenagers who listen to radio/radio executives/other Prince fans) think. Prince has still got it and he doesn’t have to have 3 million copies sold to prove that. It’s about the art anyway, not the sales. I just can’t wait for the NEXT Prince album. If he just markets that one a little bit better maybe that one will be a hit… And the cycle continues… All good things they say never last...

yeah well, i think we shouldn't worry about this kinda stuff.
if the project fails to be a hit due to bad promotion than he should have worked out by now (after many huge promotional disasters) how to market and sell a product properly. if it's a lack of interest on his side to give the projects the attention they deserve, than why should we give a fck?? the only thing i wish for is for him to have a huge hit and be recognised for something more than just his 80's output and people's constant raking up old success whilst he seems to want to promote the new 'prince'. if anything, that would give him some rest and make him try to do something a little more close to his age, like some really reflective and introspective work. he was on the right path for a while there (2001-2003) but now it seems like once again he's chasing after chart success and social acceptance. let him have it, please, so he can convince himself once more that it ain't what he wants. and let it be the last time. he shouldn't care about charts or hits or oppinions. he should do what he's best at, writing off-center music. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I see what you mean. I have my own stages.
Stage 1- Denial: I am NOT buying it. I am sick of giving that little cuss my money and coming away disappointed. I ain't doing it..NO WAY. Stage 2- Anger: SEE?! I bought it and i HATE IT... I will never ever buy another one. I SWEAR. Stage 3- Bargaining: okay, okay. imma wait til the next one and if that shit ain't a banger, I don't wanna hear the name prince for the rest of my life! Stage 4- Depression: why? why can't i just stop buying this mufuggah's stuff? *sobs and checks bank balance* i can't afford this crap. *walks over to shelf of dusty sucky prince albums that i never listen to and adds latest purchase to the pile* Stage 5- Acceptance: *logs on to prince.org and starts jonesin' for new prince music.*

Okay, you manic depressives, here's the down low: The man just hit number one. He's coming off the number tour of the WORLD. He's a Hall of Famer.
I swear, some of you just aren't gonna get happy until Prince literally turns into gold and shits rainbows. And all his competitors fellate him. In a row. But then you'd be like, "You know, I miss the days when he wasn't made of gold and shit rainbows and everyone fellated him. Those were the days. Sigh."

GottaLetitgo:
1. When, besides Purple Rain, has Prince ever had the biggest hit of the year? 2. The radio hasn't played Prince for over 10 years. This bothers you? You have the album right? Why do you need to hear it on the radio? They always talk until the lyrics start anyways. 3. If it is important to you that Prince's album be a "hit" you can always remind yourself that 3121 debuted at #1. Musicology also went platinum a few times. On the flip side, beloved "classics" like Dirty Mind, Controversy, Parade, and Lovesexy were not "hit" albums by any means. 4. Singles, promotion, etc. Again, who cares? Other than the opportunity to see Prince's pretty face on TV, why does it bother you? Do you have money invested in the project? Does someone take your album away if it doesn't sell 10 million? Wham! outsold Prince in 1985. Shit "artists" still outsell Prince now. What's new? 5. If are gonna get upset about a new Prince album, do it because it didn't fit your taste, not because it ain't "popular". [Edited 4/21/06 21:59pm] "New Power slide...."

I will buy his albums regardless of whether the Kelly Clarkson/50 Cent/ James Blunt fans will or not, or if they hype an album to #1, alot of people have #1 albums now as they are released there and you notice unless its James Blunt or Kelly Clarkson or some new name rapper, it drops like a lead bullet. Prince 1-8-16-30 whats next about 62 and then out of the 100.
Besisdes how many of you actually listen to "chart music" anyway, its all crap!!! churned out for anon discriminating audience. Prince dosen't promote his albums much because he knows dumb motherfuckers like us will run out and buy it anyway so who gives a monkeys. However I am proud to say I am one of those dumb motherfuckers, and would rather waste my money on Prince than the Sugababes or Lloyd Banks 17 Years ago I made a commitment to Prince

[Edited 4/21/06 21:59pm] I am the perfect combination of optimist and realist when it comes to P. I always believe that P should have one of the biggest albums of the year because in many cases it was so much better than what ranked ahead of it on the charts. (Okay, I had no illusions of Chaos or NPS being the biggest albums of the year). And P has always teased us with promises of multiple singles, appearances, mass promotion. And then, with a combination of radio resistence and Prince indifference, the album with so much promise goes splat. For Prince's more artistic releases, like TRC or Lovesexy, the expectations are different but for the albums he makes that are deliberately pop (as in, intending to be "popular") it is especially frustrating. But I do know things about Prince in the inner recesses of my mind that make all of this easier to digest. I KNOW he's never going to get substantial radio play again. I KNOW that his albums will be hit or miss and nothing really matters other than how much it speaks or doesn't speak to me. I KNOW that 47 year old P is never ever going to have another cultural zeitgest like Purple Rain. I KNOW fickle teens and radio programmers are cut from the same cloth. I KNOW that, regardless of all my frustrations, dashed hopes, disappointments, etc, I will ALWAYS be a Prince fan. Everything else is just the little voice in my head, hoping for some strange ass reason that with each release, the world at large will dig the man's music as much as I do. Gottaletitgo--
I hear what you are saying. However, all of your concern has to do with proper promotion. .If a label promotes and advertises you right, your album usually will be a "hit". That's how it works. Thats why Ashlee Simpson can have a "hit" record. That's why Kelly Clarkson sells millions of albums. It's not about quality, it's about pimpin' yourself and commercialising the music. Prince does it only to a point. Case in point, Prince started pushing 3121 hard and fast. It debuted at #1. Then, promotion stopped. Prince went somewhere and the album started to slide down the charts. All I am saying is that your optimism is great. However, charts and sales are only really an indicator the success of promotion, not the quality of the art. In general, Prince has always been too far ahead, too "out there", too ecclectic, too non-commercial, and too risque to have the "world at large" embrace each new album. Save that shit for U2 and Michael Jackson. If you dig Prince, that's enough. "...everybody -- Screw the masses. We only want 2 have some fun.." "New Power slide...."
