The Truth - One of Princes biggest career mistakes Not the album itself, but not giving it a proper release and including it as a hidden disc.
Including this as a hidden bonus to the Crystal Ball set, was a complete dis-service and slap in the face to what is one of Prince's most honest, fresh and compelling albums. Not only were we treated to Prince's accoustic styling but some of the lyrics here are so tight. So much food for thought Plus he wasn't hysterical about using cursewords. Just Prince being Prince. What is the big deal in saying "muthafuckin piece of pie" There aint none. I wonder how the album would have been receieved as an independent release....both by critics and fans. If anything, New Power Soul should have been a hidden disc so that gems like this could get their proper dues you couldn't play enough of me now to make me feel like a star.....Don't play me...I already do in my car". That is some smart shit [Edited 4/6/06 15:10pm] 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I agree, fantastic album, one of my favourite, and i would'a liked to see "Don't play me" or "welcome to the dawn" released as a single! Keenmeister

This album has a strong following.
'The Truth' percolates up through certain threads now and again. I still stand by my opinion that this is one of Prince's best albums. 'Man in a Uniform' is one of his hottest songs 'Dionne' is absolutely stunning. Anyone looking for something after 'Sign o' the Times' to affirm Prince's gift need look no further than 'The Truth'.

i love his vocals on this....its proof that he doesnt need layer after layer of background singing or vocal trickery to sound effective... Space for sale...

I don't think it would've made much impact, what with it being slap-bang in the middle of Prince's down-period, commercially.
If I'm not mistaken, it was going to follow Emancipation at one point on EMI, but they folded, so we know how that went. Then there was mention of, again, a proper release for the album "in 2001" (I think).... Which never materialised.

Yea, idiotic mistake. But, like everything else in this culture, people would have forgotten about it, even if it had attained classic or mythic status. This throw away culture now long appreciates it's art. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Do you think the critics would have cared about the "down-period" and looked at it on it's merit? The fans maybe not but it would have been so cool if Prince showed some confidence in this and pushed for an independent release. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Dunno really - Maybe if it was tied in with an MTV Unplugged or something and given a good promo push (like 3121!). For an acoustic album, I don't think it exudes much warmth - A lot like how SOTT the concert movie isn't a live show, if you know what I mean.

Completely agree.
I don’t play much of his 90’s work, except this and “Come”.

Then there was mention of, again, a proper release for the album "in 2001" (I think).... Which never materialised. That's correct. "The Truth" was originally intended to get a "proper" release through EMI but the executive who signed Prince, Charles Koppleman (now a Martha Stewart executive), was fired and the label was folded. So it's not ALL Prince's fault in this case, music industry shenanigans are equally at fault.

great disc...with the exception of Animal Kingdom, I listen to it from beginning to end...It's a great disc to play for non-fans to show them some of his diversity...maybe long after his career is over, but hopefully before, this album will be appreciated...

some great tunes on this album, especially "comeback" which is just beautiful.
I can't listen to animal kingdom or man in a uniform, though.

Moderator | I remember an old interview with Prince talking about Crystal Ball. When asked about "The Truth" he said he really wasn't sure how he wanted to release it and that it was Mayte's suggestion to give it away for free as part of the package.
So, I guess you can blame it on a girl. Does anyone know if it got as far with some artwork/packaging for the album? Other than single cover. All Rights Reserved. |

the CD was originally to be released on its own
and then it was to be given (as a gift) only to fans through L4OA (and later NewFunk) at the last minute, it seems, it became part of the Crystal Ball fiasco probably a marketing gimmick to achieve high sales for Prince's first Internet release of course, many of us were able to buy it in the store before our shipped copy arrived don't forget tho... that the song "The Truth" was released before any of this i agree with Supa... the album should've been released separately as well i have a lot of friends who'd eat this stuff up, but won't pay $35-50 for it not to mention that the following songs would've received more airplay if from a "proper" album... Spunky said:An absolute classic, this album should be re-released on its own – though I know there will be groans and moans. The Truth is brilliant - a vintage wine. I love listening to this album on lazy summer afternoons and especially on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It gives me the same sensation as the warmth of beautiful glass red wine enveloping ones stomach. Great, great and when I hear these critics say he hasn’t produced a classic album since …. what the F**K
