3121 first week sales comparison...

I'd be interested to know how the 183k sold in US compare to the first weeks sales for other big releases recently?

Am particularly thinking of Madonna's COADF as she is the nearest comparable artist in terms of coming to prominence in the 80s and still being 'out there'...

Madonna's 'Confessions On A Dancefloor' sold 350,000 copies in it's first week, debuting at Number One.It is her sixth album to reach Number One in America.Surprisingly, her 'Ray Of Light' CD only made it to Number Two...it was kept out of the top spot by the 'Titantic' soundtrack mad

and therein lies the difference between being a constant prescence through the 90s and disappearing off the radar of the great-unwashed!

350k eh? Pretty impressive. If I remember right it went to No1 in dozens of worldwide territories too didnt it?

Well 3121 isnt going to have such longevity. Certainly here in the UK the singles arent picking up any airplay and without significant promotion it'll sink like a stone much like Musicology before it.

I guess the same will go for the US.

A tour or a hit single is needed to keep it afloat...

I think it's remarkable when an album sells alot of copies without big hits and radio airplay.Madonna's singles don't get alot of airplay here in the States and yet,her album still went platinum here. The same will happen with Prince.A good album always finds it's audience.

You should be over here then...

Non-stop Hung Up / Sorry on radio and music video channels! or so it seems.

I'm not complaining cos I quite like Madge (got into her from ROL onwards) and saw Re-Invention tour... P just not so in favour when it comes to the powers that be for Radio programming and such.

I had thought that BS would make reasonable showing on the Chart this Sunday but I've not heard it on any radio so I'll be pleasantly surprised with a Top50 placing!

Oh yeah,I'm aware that her singles are doing much better outside of America.I think "Hung Up" reached Number One in 40 different countries. It only reached Number 7 here in America.Doesn't surprise me,since her new songs are mostly Europop/dance music, which is not that popular in America.

As for "Black Sweat",I'm disappointed that US radio seems to be ignoring it.I think it's a solid funk/R&B track.....his hottest jam in years! Oh well...

Yes I'm surprised that Uk radio hasnt picked up on it as it fits quite nicely with the majority of the music playlisted.

He's just not hip enough I'm afraid. To the 'kids' here he's about as relevant as Santana!

In America, radio programmers are reluctant to play your singles if you are "too old" rolleyes
