The Gold Experience is one of the most underrated albums in his catalogue, but it is definitely a classic! At least people who can't remember the album, can remember P-Control and even The Most Beautiful Girl In The World.

the gold experience is a quality album, but by the time it was released prince rerecorded endorphinmachine, took interactive off the album, added pussy control, took days of wild off the album, added a new version of tmbgitw, and other trax written for the album (ripopgodazippa, acknowledge me) were nowhere to be found. the first half of the album is not that great, but from dolphin to gold, there's not one bad thing besides the poor mix of the song gold.

the best tracklist would be:

interactive
days of wild
endorphinmachine
shhh (live)
acknowledge me (short version)
ripopgodazippa
the most beautiful girl in the world (original version)
dolphin
now
319
shy
billy jack bitch
i hate u
gold

Change TMBGITW to the Mustang mix and headbang worship

Later
Cause tomorrow is taking too long
and yesterday's too far away
and the reality that you believe in begins to bind.

too many misses on TGE

Including the horrifically corny and weak "Gold" Pussy Control, Dolphin, Now, March weee March uhhh to many bad songs. I won't even go there on the self indulgent and completely over the top (in a bad way) I Hate U. Which is only tolerable in its first minute and half

Sign "O" The Times was utter shit too. Purple Rain? Don't even remind me of Purple Rain...

The Gold Experience as a complet album did not work IMO

I will say it again

Pussy Control _ Great message but the music and vocal those still need to be good. For me its not just about P just being different. When hes being a different the shit still needs to sound good. There isn't a person I know who likes to dance that moves when that song comes on. It does not groove in the least

We March - Again the message great but doesn't the song and lyric need to be good also...that song is so weak

Dolphin - good please...possibly P's weakest lyrics ever...damn he had to be high when he wrote that thing

Now - Prince rapping = Prince sounding bad...he simply doesn;t do it well nor does his writing style fit. You ever notice that in every Prince song with the possible exception of Joy in Repitition P always ryhmes???!!! It sound likes hes rapping a nursey school ryhme.

Gold - possibly the gayest song especially his delivery and corny cheesy hit you over the head simplistic lyrics ever. The anthem song that wasn't. Pure garbage.

I Hate U - Self indulgent over the top pouty Prince and that fucked up guitar that does not work once so ever in the tune. The first minute and half of the song is ok...then its down hill from there

That does not mean that there aren't great songs linke Endorphine, Shhh (which is just fantatstic), Bill Jack, 319, Shy, & TMBGITW

6 great songs & 6 bad songs don't make a great Prince record what it makes is yet another very uneven one.

and by the way you have been smoking way too much crack if you believe remotely for a moment that TGE remotely compares to SOTT & PR eek

Listen, nobody on these boards has taken seriously in years anyone who is giving exact numbers on "how many good tracks" there are on some album and also attempting to name them like it was a common public opinion, based on somekind of an agreement. I hope you are not really trying to convince me or others based on such a form of "rationale". Don't be so goddamn adamant on just something that are just plain opinions - especially as its quite easy to tell you are not basing even your opinions on too logical grounds.

Scroll above, and you'll see lots of individuals saying like it is - "The Gold Experience" isn't undervalued by the fanbase, because its a highly appraised album here. It isn't "lost" either, because it's also widely known.

I agree with your taste. "The Gold Experience" was an overstuffed turkey. Some nice morsels inside, but mostly inedible junk.

For every four or five bad, boring, bloated songs, there's one hot smoking jam. The high point for me is Billy Jack Bitch. I dug his performance at the American Music Awards. Mayte looked so damn fine.

Not sure if I'm confusing things, but was that part of the Purple Medley performance? I remember he was lip synching, and when he was done, the camera panned to the audience and fucking Celine Dion was gushing with admiration, flush in the face and beaming, clapping frantically like she'd just seen Jesus heal a leper.

Heh. I thought it was funny.

It was very good, and hideously under promoted. I hate U and Gold were fantastic single Choices. Shh! is probably his sexiest ballad of the post Lovesexy period and Pussy Control is probably his only good example of rap. The motherfuckers and niggers actually sound funky and real.
Its a shame warners didnt promote it, cos if they had it may have stopped him making Chaos and Disorder and Emancipation.

i have to take issue with "under-promoted"

I have been taping Prince stuff on TV and shit since 1985. I think this cd was GREAT! and wondered why it just didnt take off...but i have several hours of promotional tape from this era they include

vh1 artist of the month or year or something like that He did this a couple of times

the performance in february of TMBGITW at the miss universe or america or usa thing

the first anual VH1 Fashion awards Pussy Control performance

a vh1 kind of break in show where he stole the show from madonna...dave chappel was there performing just before the ryde performance

the david letterman performance Dont u just love kathy lee gifford?

the AMA HUGE spectacular where he magically appears on stage from under a cloth and goes into billy jack bitch mmmmm remember mayte spreading those legs as he took a picture during 319?

i think promotion wise what was missing was air play.... i always use endorphine machine as a conversion peice

honestly, Prince got a LOT of promotion between dp symbol and gold... and in a short while later he would in a couple of years with Emancipation.

"his all new cd entitled "the gold experience" will never be released... which makes complete sense why he is here promoting it now" Dave letterman

Now we also have award show in which kirstie alley intros him with only a symbol, in which he performs interactive and endorphine machine

for those of you sweating the NPG bankroll... like an eskimo chill its all good

This is not underpromotion...

BUT i was in college as a 30 year old and can express that people my age had though he had lost his mind and college kids were sucking up grunge, and people just were not buying the cd.

I did confirm this
oh also he got some artist of the month from vh1 (one of two in two years)

Oh no. Don't just say I'm right! pout eek smile

By the way I agree to a very large degree on your descriptions on the songs you just listed (with the clear exception of "I Hate U" being "unlisteneable"), however there is a certain point of over-criticality that some individuals (myself often included) will let hinder their enjoyment from music. Take "Gold" for example - yes, it's cheesy, the lyrics are a bit "eh" in the closer inspection, it's very close to being a goddamn sports anthem and I once myself even started a thread describing "Gold" as "the one song Prince shouldn't have written", but damnit...in the end... what a song!

"Pussy Control" is his only hit of the last 10 years in the clubs. You're way off base there.

I find The Gold Experience to be thrilling from beginning to end. I'd place it in his top 5 albums for sure.

I think the word is 'ambivalent.' There are a lot of Prince songs that leave me unsure as to how I feel. I felt that way when I first heard the "Sign 'o' the Times" album. It intrigued me more than it pleased me.

"Purple Rain" was all about catharsis and release, but "Sign" was more about experimentation and uncertainty.

I guess you could say "Purple Rain" is the more childish masterpiece, focused on instant gratification. "Sign" is a bit more sedate, kicking off with bleak realism, climaxing with overt religiosity--and closing with a very adult and human seduction number.

Prince albums used to be fairly coherent. From around "Diamonds and Pearls," his message got seriously muddled and puzzling. "The Gold Experience" is confusing. He's feminist, he's political, he's a dolphin, he hates you, WHAT???

3121 to me, is a return to coherence. It's a house party where Prince uses sexuality to seduce people into faith. It's clever. Prudish in its core, but hey, prudish is all right with me.

Why are alot of the orgers angry that I am saying it's a lost classic.

Obviously amongst fans it isn't, but if you read my original post then you will see that I am using the title in the context of the general public view to Prince, and how this album should be publicly recognised as a classic Prince album.

Ho hum, theres no pleasing everyone sad

In my History Classes we often call it being too close to the data. Let me explain... my tapes were recorded as event happend, in other words.. in sequence... first up... david letterman show CHRISTMAS 1994...oh god we had to listen to Kathie lee gifford sing "its the most wonderful time of the year"

DAVE HOLDS UP A COPY OF THE GOLD CD AND SAYS IT PROBABLY WILL NEVER BE RELEASED

after that all other events happen. regardless of what prince wanted to call his project... heck how many names/projects are there for what BECAME SOTT album??? i watched the entire vh1 hijack video (what a blast) no mention of exodus by the vj... maybe we are thinking of the wrong tape.. granted it was a long awaited promotion... i for one at the time kept wondering if TMBGITW was only a taste for the GOLD/EXODUS cd as I had been listening to some tracks a couple of years before. this was the dawn of the internet age as well.

we all thought seriously at the time that GOLD anti promotion was a ploy that lasted too long... by the time it came out after all those performances no one cared...

sept 1995 gold was released
I may have the jelly 4 ur peanut butta but u got 31 hours and 21 minutes left.
