Yay for Prince and Universal - Good job, well done, all round. yay!

You know the "haters" are usually discussing their opinion on the quality of the music - not the sales.

As all fans know - sales don't have anything to do with quality. smile

Well, they're doing what they'do best.. repeating their opinions on how charts don't matter and how 3121 still is no good..

I've seen some of them repeating their sourpuss crap over and over again.. after all recognition isn't important, unless you fail to enjoy the triumphs of the artist you claim to be an admirer of.

Agreed. However.

There's something magical about hits. The obscure, hardly known, esoteric material is interesting, yes, but it's the chart toppers that bring people together. It's "Kiss" that brings people to the dance floor, not "Tamborine." It's "Purple Rain" that will break the ice at cocktail parties, not "Under the Cherry Moon."

And with more hit songs in his cache, Prince will continue to be a vital supplier to the ever present demand for cocktail party icebreakers.

Tell you what though, it makes me laugh that when his albums don't chart folks come out with "the charts don't matter/aren't relevant/he's bigger than the charts" but when he does chart it's "yay isn't it great he's at number 1".smile

Anyway, well done Prince and Universal!!

I look at it this way - I don't need England to win the World Cup, but I'd be happy if they did.

Same with Prince - I don't need him to be number one, but I'm happy he's there.

We all KNOW that charts don't really matter. It's just good that he's finally shown all the naysayers that he could still at least do it, when he really wanted to. I think that's what we are celebrating with this, cuz hell it's not like he's gonna give us some of the money or anything. That'd be the only way I'd truly care about chart positions. lol

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Yeah, but the reverse can also be said in terms of how the naysayers make it a point to show how the lack of an album charting shows much into the lack of relevance an artist has in todays musical climate.

Sure, in actuallity, P having the #1 album really doesn't matter in terms of how I personally use and enjoy his musis. But, it definetely DOES matter in the reinforcement of his musical legacy, and his continued relevance culturally (music wise).

All being said, I think it's worth celebrating that this CD has had the beginnings of a sucessful run! Both Prince & Universal should be proud...

i definately wouldn't say good job universal, because i still have yet to hear any new tracks on the radio. the only time i heard te amo corazon and black sweat on the radio is when wkdd 98.1 had a radiothon and each request cost $50, it cost me $100 to hear 2 songs on the radio. i have not heard another prince song on the radio other than little red corvette, kiss, when doves cry and raspberry beret.

Naysayers or not, I think we can all agree that Prince deserves some props from the outside world, he deserves it after all the material he's given us.
