This is great news. It's been a long time coming. Hey help the man out and call your fair weather Prince fan friends and tell them to buy this album. Not for the sake of the charts, but because it's a great album. Have fun y'all, and let's have a group prayer that the tour starts soon.

someplace where this #1 charting will deliver huge returns is in the mans confidence. A #1 gives him a little bit of that mojo that allows him to stretch out a little more artistically. musicology played sort of tight because the prodigal son wanted to cash in on his legacy, 3121 was a heat check, what if i played the industry game and allowed myself to be promoted?. We wont wait till 08' for the follow up, it will come in 07' and it will be one of those "i'm a fucking genuis now get on theez nutz" type of album.

Yay! it's a SOLEY PRINCE ALBUM His voice is simply compforting ...there's something so mystical about his vocals that's not lost by electronic or whatever it is that he does, whether live and on record...HOWEVER!! it remains beutifully succint and magical.. which's subtle and delicate i can't describe...
and I love the guitar solo on the 3121 song. The song is like a gift to me it's so special ... a major celebration in my life...like i got married or something! , a highlight and i just want to share the song with others...doesn't it make you feel like the whole world should be listening to this music? i wish everyone could feel this same joy i feel, i'm thinking that nobody knows...and i wish they could understand.
He just gives me and my life NEW MEANING in an instant... do u understand?!
that's...where...the party be. go go go!

SORRY tO BREAK IT DOWN LIKE THAT>>.but this is my world too!

The story behind 3121 charting so low on the uk charts only #9

Despite charting lower than many of its predecessors, 3121 was the most eagerly received new album by Prince in more than a decade, selling 37,130 copies last week to debut at number nine. Prince's last album of new material, 2004's Musicology, debuted at number three on sales of 32,945, while his 2001 Very Best Of set went one better, debuting at number two with 28,942 sales. Even his last number one album, Come, had lower first week sales than 3121, opening with 33,375 sales in 1994. 3121 is Prince's first Universal album, and means he has now released albums for all four current majors.

[Edited 3/28/06 14:21pm]

I just knew it! The Mother's Day rush for bland Xfactor rejects and opera-lite was the wrong damn week to release 3121 in the UK. Still given the hang up on dates with this whole project I dont suppose Universal UK had any option. Notice the TV ads are continuing this week, which is good...

However in HMV, Woolies and Tesco he is listed as #3 behind the X factor Dross rolleyes

You people are pathetic! You pine about how such great fans you are, and that P is the most creative artist of our generation, but as soon as there’s a whiff of success (from what is rally a sub-standard album), you all lose it like vultures around a carcass.

Those that say that P lost the plot in the 90’s is not a reflection on his music of that period, rather it exposes those who just want P to record whatever junk that will get him back in the charts. So they can say to their friends ‘Look at my poster boy, I’m still relevent!’

The sad thing is that P has cottoned on to this fact and has stopped taking risks. You should all be ashamed.

Just saw the numbers. Can't believe Musicology sold more in it's first week $191,000 and debuted at #3, and 3121 sold $183,000 and hit #1. I am happy for him (and his happy music label who did the real sell)

It strikes me as odd that some admirers of Prince manage to still whine and complain even if P is having some success.. what's wrong with you ppl?

P has been taking risks all his career, NEWS being a current example. The guy just can't do any good, can he. It probably never occurred to you that the guy may have as much fun trying to make something that has a bit more of a mass-appeal, while still conforming to his own standards, as well as diving into the more experimental stuff.

As soon as he stops caring about charts and starts doing whatever the more adventurous stuff, there will be the likes of you creeping from underneath every tile complaining about how 'self-indulgent' he has become..

WTF!!!!

I wake up... read the morning papers...and the good NEWS is that Prince is living the good life at #1!!

In fact his first #1 in years... in fact the first #1 debut of his fuckin' career!

I expect to see threads giving much props and what am I reading...?

A shit load of peeps STILL HATIN'?

What in the world does he have to do to satisfy a few of you so called FANS!!!!

The album is classis Prince, Is it one of his best? Maybe... Maybe not. But regardless of what tracks you like and don't like... it delivers the goods to the die-hard fans as well as..... which is evident by the charts... ... his 'pop' fans.

Yes... this album smells of pop appeal... so fuckin what... lots of his albums have which most of us consider his best work with Sign O' The Times, Gold and Purple Rain leading the way. But it does so while delivering the Funk, the Rock , the R&B... hell.. it delivers P-P-P-PRINCE!!!

Everything does not have to be so in-accessible to the general public and a large percentage of even his die-hard fans as TRC to be considered 'good music'. Good music is only as good as the person who listens to it believes it is. Just because some of you wanna be music experts may not like some or even all of the tracks on this album DOES NOT MAKE IT A BAD ALBUM w/ BAD MUSIC.

Nearly 200,000 of the popular public which includes some die-hard prince fans...were counted to have purchased the album after hearing TAC, Black Sweat and some even Fury... three tracks which are at best considered across the board to be average (in Prince terms which still means good ) at best tracks! And we know many many more has the album beyound those numbers.

We die-hard fans don't need charts to tell us what's good or not.. we've always been attracted to the gems NOT played to the masses... but record companies, concert promoters, radio programmers etc etc....DO!!!

So be happy that there are some tracks on this album which has apparently captured some amount of 'pop appeal' or at the very least will once heard... so that we the die-hard fan...can savor in the fruit of more fans... more concerts... more TV appearances... more ... P-P-P-PRINCE!!!

#1 is a great feat! If the album is marketed and promoted correctly and the RIGHT singles released... it could account for 'Musicology like' numbers or greater with out the benefit of a revolutionary marketing scheme.

Commercial success for Prince means more or at least different opportunities surely. That is relevant to you as a fan. I'm not saying it's important to you as far as how you rate the music, but it's relevant you as a Prince fan.

it still isn't.

Yes it is. Maybe not with Prince, but if a small indie band tells their fans that after releasing just two albums, the decision to record a third one all depends on how well the second album sells (this has actually happened to me), then sales figures and recognition definitely affects you as a fan.

Music must not be very important to you then. Which I can understand. There are much more important things in life than entertainment. I just know that if Prince's second album flopped so badly that he decided to never record anything ever again, I would be very disappointed.

you can be a music fan and not care about record sales. If I like the albumn I like the album, it has nothig to do with how high it charts. and Prince is not the type to stop recording just because a record flops by the industry standards.

exactly. i like music, but not so much as to involve myself with it all as deeply as others do; i don't give a shit about chart placements/media blitzes and such, i never have. i simply like folks for their music & their talents alone. gotta remember, my outlook on stuff like this is a bit different compared to other people's.

i'd be fine with it. 'sides, there'd always be other people who i could go and get hip to. the end of the musical world doesn't stop after just one person.
