As far as songs go I'd say:
1. Papa
2. There's Others Here With Us
3. Solo

As far as dark album:

The Black Album. It has this evil dark feel about the entire album. it's ...SPOOKY!

But as far as edgy goes it goes to Come. Has not done anything like that since Dirty Mind and most likely will not again. Don't put words in my mouth now. I just said Come was the first EDGY album since Dirty Mind. I did not say Come was as GOOD as Dirty Mind. Dirty Mind is a much more superior album.

Gotta cover your ass in every direction on the Org. People LOVE to read things into your threads you know...

'nuff said.

a Prince moment that I find dark but beautiful and cool as hell is from the Sign o the Times movie, the organ intro to Hot Thing...

the way the light flickers when he hits the keys, it's always made me think of a subterranean love creature in a 20's silent movie, don't ask me why! I love the way Prince's mind worked then - he was so fucking untouchable

RIGHT ON, MUTHAFUCKA! i love that intro too. it's one of my favourite "dark" moments of prince's music. the organ itself is so flickery, the tone of it... wow.

the intro to anotherloverholenyohead (studio version) also does it for me, it's dark and sinuous and perfectly controlled.

"There's Others Here With Us" is a very disturbing song. It is very simplistic but the way he utilized the screams(fucked up in themselves)as part of the insturmentation was haunting. The vocals almost sound trancelike. I would really like to know the story behind that one.
Love and lust, they both have 4 letters...

Dance with Devil - the part that always gets me is when he says "Close your eyes to love and die..." Too freaky.

The beginning of Others Here With Us, with the screams and the way the drums kick in... very freaky.

Annie Christian is very dark, too. Especially when the guitar kicks in at the end, it's got that far away desparate feeling to it. The drums on It give me the same feeling.

Bob George may be THE darkest and edgiest, though. The guitar in it is just sinister, and it just doesn't sound like a Prince song at all, but yet at the same time, only Prince could make that song.

Other songs that are dark/edgy (for me):
Wasted Kisses - the whole thing is just odd
Temptation - the hook is dark
Computer Blue - so lonely
Extra Loveable - the rape thing
Positivity - the Spooky Electric part
Pheremone - hmmm
Papa - freaky, sad

Ooooh, I disagree. I love them both, but Come...the song itself is the funkiest thing ever put on wax. Yes, it is. You should do that, baby.

Songs:
If I was ur Girlfriend (a relationship song that isn't just "let's get it on...")
Bob George (dank and SOOO funky)
Orgasm (edgy because it's so awful)

Album:
Black album isobvious contender, but I think 1999 is pretty edgy - it's got a run on the 2nd side that is full of weird shit.

How about Cookie Jar? It sounds like Prince was stuck in a haunted house when he recorded it. The lyrics are apocalyptic..."he might need you on the eve of destruction, to co-sign his order on that judgement day..."

As for the Black Album, it's not scary to me. Maybe it's cuz I'm a freak. I LOVE the ferocity of that album. I wish Prince would unleash this side of him again instead of playing Mr Nice guy 24/7.

edgiest prince song ever? my vote goes to "joint 2 joint"? seems to me like there's about three different songs going on in there and yet they all blend together so well. runners up: "computer blue","my name is prince", "annie christian" and "loose!".

Solo - I was on my kness by the time this song ended. (How did he know?)
Wasted Kisses - Heart wrenchingly sad
Bob George - What scares me is how much I enjoy this song. What a sexy bottom! (This is in no way an endorsement of spousal abuse.)
Papa - Too sad. The phenomenon is too common.
Sometimes it Snows in April - Just freaked me out the first time I heard it.

The first time I heard "Come" was on a bootleg called "Loose", and it has a long dark intro with Nona Gaye whispering (they took it from the Beautiful Experience Film). The version of "come" is the earlier version - with the cool bassline. I was so happy when I heard that song - i felt like it was a great new direction for Prince - shame he overproduced the fuck out of that song. Still like it.. but prefer the original.

I like the extended version of Computer Blue. Pretty dark.
The original version of "Something in the Water" - sung in a lower register.

I think there's something kinda alarming about "My Name is Prince" too. His vocal delivery is quite amazing - especially when you listen to it in the remix versions.

I agree with fms about "joint 2 Joint" - edgy stuff. Just wish I could kill the tapdancing bit...

I also think that "Joy in Repetition" is brilliantly dark.

I agree with Wellbeyond on Starfish & Coffee. During the LA show, Prince played that song. On the stage screens, he showed bloody murder scenes. Very dark indeed. wink

Pheremone

"I can see the curtain wrestled from the wall
I can see her hands tied
I can see it all
He pulls a gat
This is how they play the game"

"Her eyes are closed but there's no penetration
He just makes her point the pistol 2 his nose
While he masturbates and now I see a tear
Heading down towards her smile "

Supposedly the backing loop on Pheremone is:

"Pheromone make a nigger go crazy, fuckin' around make a nigger wanna die"

I would have to say Lady Cab Driver. There is something psychosexual about that song that is just not quite right. I love the song, but there is a strange, dark side to it as well. Think about it. That song came from a very dark and edgy place in Prince's mind. confused
