I know that's 'Let's have a baby' is a beautiful song, but there's something a little creepy about the way the song starts. I love the song throughout, but when I listen to the intro, I think of a scary movie and I'm not sure why.

I heard a lot about 'there's others here with us'. What album is this song on?

New Power Soul is all Scary and in these wierd Keys that sound like the soundtrack to a Scooby Doo record.

Thsi record was the begining point of Prince's obsession with his "new" religion and it SCREAMS of all this wierd EVIL Religious cult leader type stuff.

The whole feeling of this record makes me think Prince was trying to pull another Black Albuym thing with Warner Brothers, the whole "HA! I'll show YOU!" but FULL of HATE. Listen to it, it's unlike ANY other Prince record.

SCARY RECORD INDEED!

and yet TRC is not at all "full of hate" IMHO.

Song: Superfunkycalifragisexy
Album: Parade (I know I'm a freak, but I think it has this lyrically sinister edge, and all of this fluffy boinky music, and the effect is edgy and dark; ditto for the movie).

Favorites of mine, by the way. I find when I'm among other Prince fans I'm one of the few with the black/spikes/pericings/visible tattoos look happening, and somehow it's comforting to me that he makes nice dark edgy music for me to fall back on. :>

Doves,

Ooh yeah. "Others Here With Us" creeps me out too. I think it'd win as the most disturbing Prince song.

Definitely! When he starts screaming at the end there, I nearly soil my pants every time. Brother sounds kinda like a Bizarro Michael Jackson as if Mike's not enough of a scare on his own effort.

Also, Annie Christian should go on my list, or maybe that's cause it's kinda crappy. "Jah, I've been listening to a lot ohf Deutch electronic music! Feel me now, ein, zwei, polizei!" (Shudder)

Darling Nikki and Automatic are also pretty dark and edgy, but in a kind of playful way. "I'm going to have to torture you now. (Aw! Growl! Ohhh!!! Uhm...)"

The darkest shit by far he's ever put out is TRC, anyway. "Chaos ensued and she and five others were banished from the rainbow forever." eek That's bold.

"Reproduction of the new breed leader, stand up and organize! (Jawohl!)"

"With every birth, we keep it so. Never changing one piece of it, in fear of what would unfold. The scales would then become unbalanced and thus would begin the fall. The sin of one would become the sin of one and all."

Yikes! And this is before he starts objectifying women and the lashing out on jews (not Judaism or Sionism the occupation of Palestine or anything like that (unless, of course, "the palace" or "the garden" is Palestine, which I doubt), just jews. Oh, and the holocaust. Bloody hell - now that's DARK.

To me it's Computer Blue -- it's so intense and weird... the loneliness... the thoughts going through his mind... the poem (in the long version) ...the inclusion of his "Father's Song" right after hearing his "father" play it on the piano in the movie... dealing with thoughts of never having a successful lovelife because he's turning into the angry abusive person his dad is in the movie... maybe even having thoughts about past estrangements with his own real life father... the sound of the angry guitar trying to climb to somewhere higher / better / safer / different... the sound of confusion... the screams!!... the dying guitar at the end... leading into his frustration with "Nikki" ...the failure of his lovelife... "come back Nikki, come back!!" ...frustration over the real life breakup with Vanity who was supposed to be Nikki in the movie.

I've noticed a lot of people citing "Others Here With Us" and "Dance With The Devil". Where did ya'll grow up? Those songs really bother you? Those are such cheesy attempts at scary songs that Prince knew better than to release them. "Dance" is just written around a stupid line from the Batman movie. We'll to each his own I guess. lol. I think the song I find the scariest is definatly "Eye H8 U" because of the whole rape scene. That really creeps me out. I understand that he was mad at her, but it does seem like he's hanging is laundry somewhere where he maybe shouldn't.

Others here with us is probably the dullest song Prince has ever written. How on earth can people call this dark or edgy??

For me, the edgiest song would be "Bob George" from TBA.

When you think about this, there really are alot of "dark" songs. The extended version of "computer blue" for example. Dance with the devil, Something in the water, what about Superfunkycalifragisexy...

I think he should once again start listening to some more german electronic music. And not the Commodores or the O'Jays or...

I'll vote for "Mad Sex" though. There's just something profoundly disgusting about that piece. Which necessarily isn't a bad thing at all.

a Prince moment that I find dark but beautiful and cool as hell is from the Sign o the Times movie, the organ intro to Hot Thing...

the way the light flickers when he hits the keys, it's always made me think of a subterranean love creature in a 20's silent movie, don't ask me why! I love the way Prince's mind worked then - he was so fucking untouchable

another relatively dark but beautiful moment, again from a Prince video: the 1985 Prince and the Revolution live show, between songs when Prince and Wendy are having a romantic rendezvous, watching the strange light show (projected stars and circles) and then lie down together...while the band plays "Yankee Doodle"

sounds dumb, but it's dark and strange and wonderful...
