The DARKEST/EDGIEST song/LP by Prince!!! Man, I think that PRINCE is the VERY BEST when it comes down to DARK/EDGY music, almost every LP/SONG got some dark/edgy sides(well except the 1st 2 lps). In my openion, Come & 1999 are the MOST haven't heard the Black LP tho,,, [This message was edited Mon Jul 15 14:00:45 PDT 2002 by Harlepolis]

There's a certain flavour on ATWIAD that is a bit dark.

that's odd, I never think of ATWIAD in this way. It's moody but I wouldn't say dark. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

i have to agree with organgrinder, i never hear that sinister edge to ATWIAD either.
i'd just like to say that i really love prince. i mean, we all do. but today i was listening on the walkman to 1999 (the album) and then the cassette single IIWYG/shockadelica; and, hmm, you know when you just remember how much you love prince and it hits you again all over and you haven't had that HIT hit you so hard for awhile and you carry on walking and listening and thinking "i really am glad i'm on the planet at the same time as this man, this is really good fun" and shockadelica gets to the bit with all the orchestral hits and you get goosebumps even though it's a very sunny day... i mean, brr! back on topic, parade and sott give me the chills because the "engines" of the songs are so rare and tweaked and freaky and dark and flickery and refined and fucking nuts. on parade i'm thinking especially of anotherloverholenyohead, and if you listen to the 12" (maybe my favourite prince 12" a-side), you can hear that engine powering along, supercool... listen near the end, the "put your love on the rock"... that to me is sinister, controlled stuff, it's impeccable. on SOTT there's just loads more. i mean, when you get a really good listen of "housequake" and you can hear, i mean really HEAR, how it works; and you get inside its landscape... that stuff is urban, abstract, higher plane funk, that stuff is engine music. how about "strange relationship", again, it's just one solid solid canvas for prince to paint on. it's a solid engine and he drives it so well. this to me is edgy, wild wild wild.

Tiger, I agree 1000%. Housequake is the higher plane of funkiness. It is a machine. You get on and it won't let you off until the last skip of the scratchy record.
I think God has a very spooky kind of edge to it. The vocals of that song just hit you right in the soul. I can only imagine what Prince's emotions were like as he sang it. It must have been powerful, you can hear it all over his voice. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

man, "hot thing" is flipping nutty too. the bit in (if memory serves) the first instrumental break where the guitar takes over the keyboard line just once and never again. i'd been listening to that song for years before i noticed that. the tone of the guitar just roaring up at the back of the mix is SO taut and lustful it just about blew my head off.
back to ATWIAD, i like to compare it to the album lovesexy. both albums detail times in prince's life of some religious epiphany, and they seem highly connected to me. as if they are somehow versions of each other. ATWIAD, it has been said, is prince's most "organic" and least electronic album of the 80s, with the emphasis on traditional instruments higher than on his other albums. then look at lovesexy, which is what you get after prince has been through the enormous and inspired evolutions of parade and SOTT. like ATWIAD, it is a very personal and idiosyncratic "kooky" album. nine tracks long... for me lovesexy is the strung-out abstraction of ATWIAD. "positivity" is "temptation" put through the mill and turned from hellfire r&b into strange control music. "positivity" freaks me out, it's so great. it's down the line with that high-pitched beat, straight down the line. strange control stuff. i'm not sure people know what i'm talking about here, but this for me is prince's edginess, when it doesn't sound like anything but what it is, when it doesn't sound like anything except what prince wanted it to sound like. "all the critics love u in new york", "the beautiful ones", others that just sock it to me as well... thanks for listening, it's late and i need some sleep.
