Why Black Sweat wasnt a hit 1) Video wasnt filmed in Rio
2) Video needed light-skined girls in bikinis 3) Lyrics dont mention "Da Club(tm)" 4) Video lacks the prequisite "entering Da Club wit yo posse(tm)" scene 5) Prince is just too damn old and looks funny with all that makeup.

or it could be that he'd just released a single/video that had just barely started to gain a bit of momentum, and it's hard for P to keep the mainstream public's attention in the first place unless he's doing something from 1984.

It wasn't a hit because P made no mention of his "humps" or his "lovely Princely lumps".
Plus the dude is 50... All good things they say never last...

It wasn't a hit because rap and Kurt Cobain ruined it for real musicians. Rap ruined it because, well, it isn't music. Cobain ruined it because he made rock and roll be about how much life sucks, instead of partying and getting laid (which was what rock was about for the 40 years before Cobain ruined it).
Appreciate what we have in Prince (and other real musicians) because there isn't much of a market for them anymore. I hope that changes, but the only way it can is if those who market music to us quit dumbing down our entertainment.

It never had a chance to be a hit.
There was so much Universal could have done. There is so much Prince could have done. I think he's relying too much on internet advertising instead of doing TV spots. You have to pay for promotion and Black Sweat bombing is the result of somebody not shelling out the money to create a buzz. The song could have been as big as "Kiss" for sure. Also....it's not the 80's anymore. Gone are the days when you can release a singe ten million days before the actual Lp's release and think you'll have holding power. People bore quick in these cell phone/ one-click/DSL days. They want a record to support the single. It took too long.Hopefully Prince will swallow a control-b-gone pill for his next single and allow some remixers to make him some money. Once again it's not the 80's and he won't be able to relaase an extended play 12" that's not remixed by professionals and expect people to listen. Maybe if he was producing b-sides as amazing as his were in the 80's it would help, but that's not happeing either. [Edited 3/21/06 8:28am] [Edited 3/21/06 8:29am]

None of these. Try this: 6). The song was a tuneless self-parody. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

That certain Kurt Cobain you despise so much was a musical genius and he gave voice to the Gen-X!!! Go back to your hair bands albums! [Edited 3/21/06 8:33am] Maybe You feel more confortable in living in squeaky clean world where everybody is happy and perfect! Guess what: LIFE'S A BITCH! deal with it! Also Rap is a form of expression and music! Shame the actual Rap we listen on the radio is an absurd violation of the concept! [Edited 3/21/06 8:36am]

I personally dont think it was a hit because the song just isnt good enough, even by todays poor standards. What i really want to know is when the hell did hit singles become more than just about selling well. Seriously, why the hell does a song that sells well on CD and download not become a hit?? Radio play shouldn't come into it, thats to do with money and influence, so why the hell isnt it based on sales and sales alone????

I think black sweat is not single material. It's more of a B-Side material imo!
Also the promotion was badly done!

It wasn't a "hit" because even "hits" aren't hits.
Remember 1999's "hit" "I Wanna Love You Forever" by Jessica Simpson? It hit #3 on Billboard Hot 100. Nope? Me neither- I had to look that shit up. Look at any past "Now: that's what I call music" CD and see how many songs you actually remember. Maybe 1/4? Charts are irrelevant (especially with digital/online music stores). They don't show quality. Have they ever? "Black Sweat" is hot shit-who cares what it reaches? Did you care why "Mountains" was not a "hit"? [Edited 3/21/06 8:39am] "New Power slide...."

it wasnt a hit because the synth sound is like the dentists drill. I wince every time i hear the song. Wild dogs gather at my door. As equality grows, violence declines.

Black Sweat still hasnt been released yet in the UK - it gets released next Monday! So we'll see if it can be a hit here with the album out at the same time. Certainly I've seen the advert for the album featuring the Black Sweat video on tv a few times now, and the video has been out for ages on vid shows...

The record companies sign people who are easy to promote and control, the people who are signed are a bunch of unskilled wanna-bes with A.D.D. and are just happy that someone is sticking a camera and a microphone in their face. They could care less about being unique or interesting. Lastly the public keeps patronizing this bullshit. If people just cut off their radios televisions, or stopped buying magazines that promote these assholes, and DEMAND
BETTER ENTERTAINMENT....that's what we would get. They dumb down our entertainment because dummies keep buying into it, unfortunately.

this is a part of the reason why as well, i'd think...joe & jane public put up with all the mindless excuses for entertainment that keeps being spewed out, seemingly without a care and just so long as they're entertained by it. dum-dum fluff kill't the established star(s).

Actually Radio only counts on the US! European countries and Canada are more truthfull on their love for artists! thank god I'm not American! Yeah, Ive just been reading up on how billboard compiles their charts and its fucking ludicrous. For starters their means of testing consumer hits is questionable, their ratio of airplay to sales / downloads is stupid, and the number of different charts they have boggles the mind. They've essentially made the Hot 100 a meaningless chart, as every other chart they have has been created as a result of recognising a weakness in the current compiling techniques. From what i could make out, the industry lobbied for this as they believed singles sales harmed album sales, and so basically encouraged the demise of the single.

I agree totally. Gives me a f**kin' headache. Even my kids plug their ears when we play it in the car. What was he thinking. Would be a great song otherwise. As it is it isn't even listenable. (is that a word?) "What a lovely fat beat with a zompige baslijn"
