Why don't the older "funk loving" Prince fans from the 1980s have the 12 Inches already? So many people were looking forward to The Ultimate Prince 2 CD set because it contained several of the 12 Inches. Since it has been postponed, so many people are extremely disappointed. There are so many people that claim to be huge Prince fans since the 1980s and so many of them claim to be such experts on funk. It gets me to wondering, why didn't they have all or most of these 12 Inches already?
My question is not for the younger fans because they grew up in the CD era. My question is for the older Prince fans, especially the ones that claim to know so much about funk. It seems to me that they didn't know these 12 Inches existed until they learned about them later in the internet era after CDs took over and vinyl was hard to find. Sure, some people bought cassettes back in the day instead of vinyl but if some of these people were as big a Prince fan as they say they were, they would have known about most of these 12 Inches and bought them. Also, for the ones who claim to be such funk experts, there is no excuse for them to not have most of them. I don't know about the whole world but in my area, pop stations never played the Prince 12 Inches. R&B stations were the only ones to play them. What kind of "funk expert" didn't listen to R&B radio back in the day? Where did they think they were going to hear funk? Just wondering. . . [Edited 3/17/06 8:30am] Andy is a four letter word. | |

yup. i have all the old 12" stuff on CD, but it's all transferred from vinyl and it sounds like it. as much as the pops and crackles make me feel nostalgic, i'd flip for really clean, crisp versions of the classic 12" material. | |

Yes I've have most of the 12" remixes already
& thats what they are - vinyl. I would like them on cd & remastered. Been a Prince fan since the early 80's & its about time we got an official remix cd. Thats a long wait. | |

I burned all mine onto CDs also and they sound pretty good. I had ordered the "Kiss" extended version on CD years before I had a CD burner. When I burned my vinyl onto CD, "Kiss" sounded much better because it was louder and had more power than the one I bought. I can definately understand why people would want them remastered. I thought about buying "Ultimate" strictly for "U Got The Look". That particular year, I was without a turntable for almost a year and I bought the cassette version of it. Cassettes definately don't sound near as good burned on CD as vinyl does. When I heard the "Ultimate" set was postponed, I was like "oh well...". It's really not that big a deal to me because I have them already but there are some people that are pissed. That's what I don't understand. Andy is a four letter word. | |

I do have all the 12 inches on vinyl but not on CD. That is why I want the Ultimate CD.
(I also have 12 inches of something else...and it aint snow on my front lawn!baaahaa! (MD)) Stand Up! Everybody, this is your life!

thats exactly it, they have never been OFFICALLY released on cd, some have but not many. and to rip them from vinyl or a bootleg gives you a crap sound.
thats why we THE BIG PRINCE FANS THAT ACTUALLY DO HAVE EVERYTHING want this album out, and are actually alittle disapointed that again it's a best of prince hits with some mixes. instead we want an offical remix album with all the vinyl 12" mixes..... noituloveR lautiripS weN a fo gninwaD eht si sihT | |

I've got (almost) all the 12"ers as well, but I do not have the time, know how, equipment, to transfer them to computer (I have the vinyl, but no longer have the player). Plus, these are remastered... -->> This Space 4 Rent <<--

I wasn't going to buy it on CD..

Since I haven't liked current music in general for years, I had no reason to have a burner for the computer to download new music by today's crappy artists. I bought a burner for my stereo for the sole purpose of burning vinyl and cassettes and it sounds great. You can control the recording level yourself. Andy is a four letter word. | |

Back in the 80s, I just didn't have the cash to buy all the 12 inches, if anything it went went on buying the full albums by Prince and other artists I was into. As well, not every music shop would stock that many 12 inch records, and they'd often only stock the latest tunes and older tunes would just not be restocked so often, plus in my home town the only place you could buy records from was Woolworths or WHSmiths which were not heavily stocked. So to find them, I'd have to go on a bus journey to the local cities, rifling through several music shops, whenever I got the chance. I remember once having to put back the I Wish U Heaven 12 inch because on that day I couldn't afford it (this being all pre-having a credit card!) and the next week I went back and it wasn't there!
Ultimately, there were lots of holes in my collection. I'm so thankful for the wonderful thing that is the internet which allowed me to track down mp3s of 12 inches I'd never bought or even heard at the end of the 90s! But I would still buy the Ultimate for the quality of the sound. Before the internet and online music shops and file-swapping and mass use of credit cards, it was a lot harder to get stuff than it is today, or even to find information about what was available. | |

Record players are easy and cheap to buy - and let's face it, there hasn't been much decent music in the pop-charts since the CD era came into full swing, so I'd say it was essential getting a record player.

I used to own every Prince 12" there was...
...and then one day, I was in a situation where I wasn't going to be able to house them, along with a ton of other possessions, and I gave them to a friend of mine with the condition that someday...someday....I was going to want them back. Eventually, I ended up moving to the other side of the country and I'm not sure that I want to deal with the idea of asking for him to ship them to me at this point. The Ultimate Prince CD doesn't interest me in the least, for some reason. The only reason I'm piqued at this point is because there's a possibility that it will be a rare item. That, and Target had it listed at $9.98 in their ad last Sunday. I initially had no intention of buying it. I have MP3s of all of the extended mixes and their quality suits me fine. I'm not jonesing for remastered 12" tracks. [Edited 3/17/06 12:16pm] |

I had the same problem. I'm from West Virginia and there was owhere I could find any of Prince's maxi-singles after Purple Rain. Once I moved to Atlanta to go to college in 1989 I found a load of SOTT and ATWIAD 12 inches. I was in heaven!! | |
