Yes way I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

You mean 3121 doesn't sound like TRC??? (I haven't heard it yet) I consider TRC a masterpiece of work...and it sounds like 3121 isn't far behind. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

The Rainbow Children is one of my fav albums of all time, and this 3121 may be one of the best pop Prince records in his catolouge. Very well done. I can listen to it straight Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I love the musicianship of TRC, but I hate it as an album. It's a mess.
3121 is a refreshingly consistent pop album with a lot of creativity behind it. I'm really happy with it. [Edited 3/12/06 21:41pm] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

But I agree, hard to believe the same person who made TRC made such pop-smeared-pre-fabricated-MTV allocated-drivel. I don't care much for the preaching of TRC or the much lauded "Darth Vader" voice, but it does contain inspired and daring music, at least by the actual definitions of the terms. No hard feelings.

TRC music = best he's ever done
TRC lyrics = crap - totally sexist

TRC lyrics = crap - totally sexist Agreed, especially on the lyrics. My main point is, whether or not you agree or subscribe to it (which I don't), he definitely was following what he thought to be a genuine muse with the record. [Edited 3/12/06 22:01pm] No hard feelings.

Apparently his muse this time around was a pile of dung.

i like it. i hated the rainbow children. musically it was awesome, but the lyrics and bullshit vadar voice made me hate it. this is the first time since the gold experience i have mostly liked a prince record Power tends to corrupt; absolute power corrupts absolutely. - Lord Acton

If that's what you dismiss 3121 as, can't Purple Rain share the same criticism? It tried just as hard to be a hit. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I mean, please, When Doves Cry sounds like nothing that came before it. How about the opening of Let's Go Crazy? The guitar solo in said song. The Princely-weirdness tied with the musicianship of Computer Blue. I'm assuming you're familiar with this album and if you want to compare it to 3121, so be it, but they are so far apart in terms of muscianship, ideas, and time, that I'll leave it how little I've already said. I'm sure he wanted a hit with it and it he nailed it. The best pop/rock album ever released imho. Perfect length, perfect music, perfect production, esp. for the time. No hard feelings.

I didn't say 3121 was as good as Purple Rain. It isn't. Nowhere even remotely close.
They're both every bit as commercial in their respective aspirations though. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

As I recall, at the time of the release of TRC, a number of Orgers were predicting that Prince would revisit more innocuous pop craftings in a few years.
Some, actually, were hoping so .. that TRC represented more a detour than a destination. Hard to say which represents which, these days. But, from the Beyonce/Grammy deal, he's been on a roll ... to the bank.

Maybe it was just because Prince was younger and more cocksure, thinking he could do no wrong at the time of Purple Rain, which was, of course, quite true. No hard feelings.

You should have realized by now that Prince writes such and such songs. What is the point of this thread anyway?
